Store Skaga-støls-tinden Stor(e) = Big skaga = something thats sticks up støl = A place (in the mountains) where you could milk and take care of your cows tind = A mountain peak or peaky mountain chain
Thanks for showing this! I made it on my road bike with 28mm. Had to flats on gravel flat section on top. Uphill is really tough one with bags on bike. But it is definitely worth it!
Thank you for promoting Norway the way you do, with your gorgeous filming and narration. Keep up the awesomely splendidly wonderfully work. Keep pedaling, so I don't have to 😉
We took this bike ride a few weeks ago, after seeing your first video. Long drive from the Oslo area, but so worth it! Have to admit that we cheated a bit, using our el-bikes, but I just passed retirement age and am allowed to use extra help. It was nevertheless still challenging up to 1000 meters, and a lovely ride further on. Glad I had good brakes on the ride back down to the car! Thanks for your videos and inspiration.
Absolutely love that I can see my hut in your video😃 and that you apreciate the valley as much as I do. I think i might have been there at the time you were there. (i was there a couple og Weeks ago and the weather was amasing for 2weeks straight) So lovely to have your lovely videos to watch whilst back in my base in Denmark, dreaming of returning. Seen some photos of the area recently and there is snow up on the mountains already. Not long before having to swap the bikes, hiking boots and running shoes for skis.
Yes, I remember you saying the weather was perfect when you were there. I had to go back to experience it like you did! Ps: It snowed last night in the mountains.
Afternoon mate i am actively checking out flights for next year & discovered there’s a ferry from Eemshaven next to Groningen in Netherlands that goes up to Kristiansand so will be continuing my planning keep up the excellent vids 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🚴🏻♂️🏴🏴
My family and myself took that ferry in July, it has actually only started running in April this year. And yes it was booked quickly, but the reason might be partly that it was a novelty. Great way to get to Norway if you live in the Netherlands like me. Before, we have taken ferries from Kiel and Hirtshals, and driven through Denmark and Sweden after taking the famous bridge over the Sont.
Awesome content Matthew. Makes me wanna ride in Norway too. Do you have a proper hint for rental gravelbikes in Oslo. Since I have an upcoming day off there, I would love to explore some of the surroundings. Keep the videos coming. Cheers, Chris
That mountain has been my desktop-background for 2 years now, it looks so much more dramatic then the other mountainpeaks we have, tho I also love Besshøe.. The look on your face when your trying to pronounce Store-skagastøls-tind 😂 Epic.. (like a puppy who got cheated from his treat.. 🤣) as someone else commented, just call it "Storen", much easyer 👍
I'm becoming hooked on your stunning videos, and this one is wonderful. Your enthusiasm and appreciation for Norway is so clear, and infectious! There's a small but, though, and please don't take this the wrong way. There is a danger that what you intend as a bit of fun with pronunciation can come across as an archetypal monoglot English speaker mocking another language, or being unconsciously chauvinist. Have you ever heard anybody but English speakers do this? After all, the overwhelming majority of the world's population are at least bilingual. It's easy to rely on the flawless English of most people in a country like Norway, but it's a small gesture after living for some time in a country to get your head around how to read a word or placename, even if you don't understand its meaning. I'm sure it wasn't your intention to even appear to be disrespectful though. And I really love your videos. I've visited Oslo twice, but not yet gone outside it, and you're inspiring me to put that right. If only there was a direct ferry connection from Britain again so I could bring my own bike!
What an incredibly beautiful view - the names a bit more tricky though!!! Wow third time lucky, definitely going to have to check out the previous video. That was amazing 🍻
2:31 The one to the left, that you marked as Store Skagastølstinden, is actually Store Austabotntind, 200 meters lower. Store Skagastølstinden is also in the picture, but further right.
Nice video, partly been there. What you mark as Store Styggedalstinden is actually Store Skagadølstind = Storen. You're probably never going to try to cycle up there. It's a mountain for climbers, but not on a level like Eiger Nordwand or Yosemite Half Dome. Are you going to try to climb it ?
Just beautiful. 😍Your videos made me want to go to Norway again and finally have a vacation there. And today I booked the first time in my life Norway, July next year in Aga. Thanks for your great videos and this amazing nature!
6:01 I think I've already commented this on another video: This is so true. Seeing this on videos or photos is cool. But actually being there is a completely different experience. Maybe some day I can visit this road myself. :) PS: Don't give up on the pronunciation, lol. Maybe it's because I am a native German speaker, but I think Norwegian pronunciation is pretty straightforward and not difficult at all. :P If you think it is hard, imagine what a non-native speaker must think when they see English place names like "Worcestershire", "Woolfardisworthy" or "Rampisham", which are actually not pronounced like they are written at all. :D
I'm looking to incorporate this road in my route from the Rallarvegen to Jotunheimen NP, but with both the Fodnesstunnelen from Lærdal and the Amlatunnelen from Kaupanger forbidden for cyclists, I see no way to get to Øvre Årdal but out and back all the way from Tyinkrysset, which I'm unwilling to do. How did you get there?
Is it possible to continue cycling on this road towards Tyinvatnet? Or one needs to cycle down to Øvre Årdal (almost) and climb back using the road 53?
Hi Matthew. this looks absolutely fantastic. I'd love to do something similar one day. Can i ask what the roads are like for cyclists when you get far up north? I suppose there wont be designated cyclepaths, so the cyclist will be on the main roads, where all the car and lorries are aswell. is that very uncomfortable for the cyclist or i is it ok? -Andreas
You are on quiet roads until you reach the Lyngen Alps (just passed Tromsø). Unfortunately after that it's the E6 with supply trucks passing by but it's reasonably safe and not busy. You have an option at Alta to get onto another quieter road for a bit. But then you have the mosquitoes....
@@matthewnorway ok. thank you. Is there anywhere i can see the route you took to norkap? i mean like drawn on a map? I know i can see it in your videos, but to see it drawn on a map would make it very visible....?

That is so great to hear Rande! Congratulations on powering up the 1000m - ebike or normal it's a great accomplishment!

I am just left stunned by what you captured... and know that what you captured only begins to show what you experienced in person. Wow!
The valley is mind blowing. You just look at it in awe and amazement.
Indeed epic. Fabulous. You finally got to see the mountains in all their glory. Richly deserved. And the 42 hair pin bends!

I had no problem to say "Store Skagastølstinden" like I had when I pronounced the Polish tongue twister name Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz 😀

In the opposite direction out of Øvre Årdal you find Tindevegen towards Turtagrø - with (some kind of) tarmac all the way.

I just got 2 check. My route planner says 10% to 20% degree climb. At 2 points at least?
