Good points. Some thoughts: - For edc I find that "tactical blades" like tanto and karambits are great for utility. Tantos can be a great scrapper and "claw" blades are good for straps and both open packages well. - I'm a little surprised you had no Cold Steel knives featured. They tend to be unapologetically keeping self defense in mind for their designs. - For length laws, consider short blades with handles that are design to allow for a choked back grip for extended reach.
As an unapologetic Cold Steel hater there are reasons why I wouldn't pick one. They are more tacticool than tactical. The "murdered out" blacked out look makes it look menacing. If you get caught with a Cold Steel knife the court system would have an easier time convincing a jury that it's a weapon and not a tool. Cold Steel blades are designed more for durability than practicality. The people who buy them tend to be knife abusers where they will smack their knives into tree stumps, pry open car doors and smack rocks with it. They will be damaged from this more often than not but won't critically fail where the blade snaps in half after hard use. Bastinelli does self defense fighting knives better: Small, discreet, lightweight, thing grinds and incredibly sharp straight from the factory. They are a better option if you want a knife for self defense in a fight because they prioritize sharpness and concealability.

Um, a LOT of companies offer black blades. Also, not all Cold Steel knives come in black. 3) I kind of wonder why you are in court in the first place in that hypothetical situation. If you committed a crime with the knife then it is your own fault. 4) The larger ones are probably less practical for many people, but they offer a large range of product that are practical. You can get your record expunged. I have a relative who was a felon and wanted to foster kids. They had it expunged. It was a process but would be worth it. They now even have a ccw.

I really liked your thought process in this video. Knives for self defense being used against more than just aggressive people. Cutting a seat belt to free yourself after a car accident probably is a more realistic probability for most of us than any scenario where you need to use it in a fight against another person. Or even a wild animal attacking you is more likely for some of the rural viewers. My thought process has always been that people are still capable of negotiation and using my wits and my words is what I would rely on first before my knife in every situation where I felt a person might attack me. Knives or any weapon are my last option should all the more peaceful options fail to work.
I'm happy to see this video. The general conversation around knives for self-defense is really dismissive, but I fail to see the reason why. There's wildlife, seatbelts, tourniquets, kidnappings, accidental stranglings, etcetera. As a kid, I was in the backseat taking a nap during a long roadtrip, and the seatbelt had gotten wrapped around my neck. Nobody in the car had a sharp object, so I was slowly losing blood and air as we got to a gas station. A knife would've helped. But living in the inner-city, there's basically 3 tiers of people: Unarmed people, people with knives, and people with guns. I prefer not to carry guns, but I also don't want to go unarmed with the areas I roam. The sight of a knife has helped me more than once.
I'd also like to mention that people who argue tasers and pepper spray are more effective, I disagree with. I've seen people who didn't flinch at pepper spray. Tasers need both nodes to make contact with skin, and not be obtruded by clothing. Not only that, but pepper spray and tasers have one use. For EDC items, they might never see the light of day, and the "scare factor", is very low in comparison to a knife. A knife has deterrent capabilities that the other two don't, plus it's more ubiquitous in its use.
For self defense, I would only use a knife with a flat spine so it can safely hug my wrist, and generally the longer the blade the better. I think on your list, the Launch would probably work the best, but then again, I would rather have something similar without the jimping.

Great video some great pics. If anyone thing I think you missed was because you mention self-defense you should have a designated self-defense, knife, and and EDC knife. And most important self-defense knife should be a fixed blade. Hands-down. … you definitely covered the bases with you never know what circumstances can come up. If somebody grabbed you from behind I do believe I’d be more comfortable, pulling if I could a fixed blade than a folder.. thanks again definitely a great video. Should be more out there like this.
A great showing of some cool knives, some are definatly designed first and foremost with self defense in mind while others are a balance of the two. Almost any blade could be used for self defense but without some proper training most are not going to even remember that they have a blade on them in a stressful situation hence some proper training should be looked at if your serious about it. I purchase all of my knives with a specific task in mind and self defense isn't usually one of them but 99% of them could be used in that application in a pinch if I think about it not to mention other emergency situations. I was ethically challenged as a young Fella. I was crimeing and was dropping thru a roof and my sleeve got hung up leaving me hanging 10 ft off the floor. Helpless with a pain monkey running up and down me arm and my joint ball was pulled out of place. I Delica ed it….dropped to the floor and fainted. Lol. Your right. Ya never know.
Carry a blade every day, had to deploy a blade for self defense many years ago as a teenager, didn't have to use it, but just site of the blade was enough to dissuade the aggressor and I made it home safe.

I carry a self defense claw type pick with a finger loop. The kydex is attached to my appendix firearm and extra mag rig. This I feel is the best overall option as I have my p365x and my pike always at a quick access local and one that I train with 1 to 2 times a month minimum. I'm very used to appendix carry for my firearm so I just found it intuitive for my claw pick type edged tool as I've spent so much time getting extremely proficient with appendix carried firearms that it just works.
A popular saying about self-defense in the gun community is "the best gun in the world is the one you have", and I think that can be more broadly applied to weapons in general. Like you say in the video, of course a knife gives you nowhere near the advantage over a human attacker that a gun would, but in most cases it's a hell of a lot better than being stuck with your bare hands.
i live in southern utah and one of my biggest reasons for carrying a knife is mountain lions and bobcats. have seen quite a few, luckily from a distance. Carrying a gun in your hip isn’t always the most comfortable especially when rock scrambling or hiking.
Down here in Florida we are getting lots of black bear. Some of the trails my kids and I hike and bike we see then here and there. Most run off but we have also had them give short charges at us as well and it's absolutely terrifying... a 500lb black bear is no joke... so it's 100% when we are on any hike and bike now this momma has her G20 10mm on her hip.. I hope to never have to use shoot one they are beautiful amazing animals but with as aggressive as some act it's just a matter of time. Some of the trails we stopped going to because we seen them frequently and aggression happened more times then not. Most of the trails tho we rarely see them and they always turn and run and if they choose not to... Mr 10mm will be a strong deterrent.
3:38 i think a knife is a very valid weapon vs a gun within 21ft and most gun fights happen within 10ft. 5:05 i always carry two blades on me so i can keep one clean and ready to go and i have another one to dirty work. 5:42 i like to buy aftermarket emerson wave mod attachments for my knives and they really only work with the axis lock because the blade opens too fast and will bounce out of any other kind of lock especially if its a bigger blade with a little weight to it.
i agree but that rule only is for back against the wall, if you can run backwards it cuts in half, but i agree as someone whos been in a lot of crazy situations its usually very close and fast
Whenever I think of self defence situations, I always gravitate towards my ZT 0452, microtech bravo, or my bastinelli compact dragotac. And in regards to the reverse grip, or "knife fighting grip" it's almost completely useless. You significantly reduce your range for almost no advantage unless you're super close quarters, and even then it's questionable.
It's useless if they are in front of you, but when your grabbed from the side or behind, and you can hit sideways when in a reverse grip, also if your on tip of someone that's the best grip
I remember seeing a sword reviewer make a whole video on the validity of fighting in the reverse grip. His conclusion was that unless you are going to do a downward stab nearly every motion you could do with the blade would be more effective in an overhand grip. More range of motion, more power, better leverage, tighter grip... Overhand grips win every time.
Don't like saying the brand name as of recent. But the Benchmade SOCP is a great last ditch weapon. Though i don't know its good for EDC, it would open a box though.
If you aren’t totally comfortable with a karambit I would forget about it. I study Kali and really love karambits but I have reservations about them. The techniques are totally different and that’s not something that you want to have to try and remember while piss is dribbling down your legs. You can hand a straight blade to anyone and they can intuitively use it. Another thing to consider is climate, karambit originated in Indonesia which is a warm climate, if your attacker is wearing heavy clothing or several layers it can get caught up, where as stab will go straight though. You’re demonstration of the OTF shows there is just too much to go wrong and not a viable option (however cool John Wick makes them look). Just my opinion.
I have the bestech strellit. Theres one downside. The handle has such a bend in it that it deforms the fist. I dont know why they did that. Wouldve been so much better with a less extreme curve
A knife isn't a spoon. A knife is completely capable of defense against humans and/or anything else. Knives are regulated as weapons in the vast majority of US states as well as the rest of the world. There should be zero debate among adults on if a knife is capable of defense. Though, you think button locks don't tend to be a super strong lock type? Why? I know Civivi and others button locks have a small amount of contact, but look at Hogue's contact depth, it's super strong. Have you experienced any button locks fail? I haven't yet and I assumed they were much much stronger than liner locks..
I didn't use medford because the choice that I had to work with is more of a battle field knife that SD 😆 the other ones I have u don't think would do well or wouldn't be my first choice but I know there are some that would be great I didn't have them on hand
I wanted to ask what are your thoughts on Gerber and CRKT knives. I know those are very basic but their the first ones you see when going to a outdoorsman shop like BIG5 or Bass pro shop. Those are the first knives I have personally owned and recently got a CIVIVI macarta coming in the mail today because of your recommendation. So I will proably answer my own question once I put the CIVIVI in use but what in short what is your thoughts on Gerber and CRKT.
I’m glad you warned people about training for drawing from the sheath on the Kizer Harpoon. Boy I got my index finger real good with that on the first day of owning it! Yikes! 😂
An overlooked benefit of a knife for personal protection is that the steel does not matter, as long as it is sharp. It is only unsheathed or opened for doing the Devil's business. Regular training is also required.
Everyone has heard the line "you should never point a gun at anything or anyone you're not willing to shoot. When it comes to using a knife in a self defense scenario however, I'm unequivocally of the opinion that it goes beyond the "willing to shoot," red line. You should never pull a knife unless/until you're intention it is to use it on them. Ideally your assailant wouldn't even be aware that you have it until you've used it and they're leaking out. Beyond the fact that you probably wont be aware of what they're capable of, there's always the risk that the tables will turn and you'll end up being the one with a sucking chest wound, and you can guarantee that as soon as they become aware that this new variable has entered the equation, everything is instantly going to escalate and the stakes have changed to purely survival, and at that point who knows what will happen. That's my 2¢ at least.
I edc the cold steel tanto (san mai). Long enough to feel safe if theres even slightly longer knife against me, and when it comes to knife vs knife, my goal would be to punish the knife arm of my opponent, strike against strike would make the attacker drop his knife, attacker without knife would get hit every time he gets too close. And do I have any real knife self defence experience? No! I have never needes to use any violence since my "childhood", but just looking at the news these days tell me that theres enough dangers outside the door, that are ready to hurt me just for my wallet and such.
If you're from Canada, in the eyes of the law, if you admit your knife is for self defense, you're carrying an illegal weapon and it will be confiscated. Your knife is for work and daily tasks. The knife laws are very gray here. And to everyone, if you're outnumbered and weapons are not involved, do not draw a knife as it can be used against you. Most people will not win a fight where they're outnumbered with just a knife. Run or take the ass kicking.
That’s why you get them drilled and tapped for left hand carry and carry with the wave facing forward in your right pocket so you can wave it right out into reverse grip with minimal adjustment

I got out of my truck last night in San Francisco (traveling/Valentines dinner) and went to feed the meter and a girl rushed up to me with a kerambit . Backing I put distance and shouted STOP. She explained that someone was chasing her and a guy was pulled over up the street yelling at her. I told her to get walking and I’d watch the guy to make certain he didn’t follow. She was probably a hooker, deal gone bad. I’ve had edged weapons training and did have a Button Lock Elementum, but I had what I think is a better weapon that I was at ready with,… that’s a hickory walking cane. The guy threat stayed in his car on the other side of the street for quite a while,… bleeding? The city is a sewer.
@@NeevesKnivesget your rights back Brother. It took years of filing and fighting but I finally got them back. I know it depends on the type of charges but it can be done. It’s just a long process.
I believe the only way a knife can be an effective self defense blade is if you can get it into action with one movement. So either a wave type or fixed. I carry both fixed and a ganzo adimanti. I have tremors so i don't carry my gun yet until i train more. God help who lays hands on me. I've been taking a knife and mma class.
automatics are not any faster than most modern folders and even if they're legal, look really bad to authorities. so you're just leaving yourself at a disadvantage legally for little to no benefit
@Ace King i carry it all. I feel having only one form of defense limits you. Everything has its time and place. Never said pepper spray was better for defense. I just said it's better than bear spray. I have multiple physical problems so i won't fight if i don't have to. If spraying something allows me to get away its better than fighting a person or animal. If a dog is attacking my dog i will get up close and spray it. That way i don't hurt my son or dog. If you have a good brand and it's stream form not mist wind affects it less
yes unless i go and fight for them back, after so many years depending on your state and felony level you can fight to get them back some charges are for life no matter what but it just depends.

I hope to never have to use shoot one they are beautiful amazing animals but with as aggressive as some act it's just a matter of time. Some of the trails we stopped going to because we seen them frequently and aggression happened more times then not. Most of the trails tho we rarely see them and they always turn and run and if they choose not to... Mr 10mm will be a strong deterrent.

3:38 i think a knife is a very valid weapon vs a gun within 21ft and most gun fights happen within 10ft. 5:05 i always carry two blades on me so i can keep one clean and ready to go and i have another one to dirty work. 5:42 i like to buy aftermarket emerson wave mod attachments for my knives and they really only work with the axis lock because the blade opens too fast and will bounce out of any other kind of lock especially if its a bigger blade with a little weight to it.
i agree but that rule only is for back against the wall, if you can run backwards it cuts in half, but i agree as someone whos been in a lot of crazy situations its usually very close and fast
Whenever I think of self defence situations, I always gravitate towards my ZT 0452, microtech bravo, or my bastinelli compact dragotac.
And in regards to the reverse grip, or "knife fighting grip" it's almost completely useless. You significantly reduce your range for almost no advantage unless you're super close quarters, and even then it's questionable.
It's useless if they are in front of you, but when your grabbed from the side or behind, and you can hit sideways when in a reverse grip, also if your on tip of someone that's the best grip

I remember seeing a sword reviewer make a whole video on the validity of fighting in the reverse grip. His conclusion was that unless you are going to do a downward stab nearly every motion you could do with the blade would be more effective in an overhand grip. More range of motion, more power, better leverage, tighter grip... Overhand grips win every time.

Don't like saying the brand name as of recent. But the Benchmade SOCP is a great last ditch weapon. Though i don't know its good for EDC, it would open a box though.
If you aren’t totally comfortable with a karambit I would forget about it. I study Kali and really love karambits but I have reservations about them. The techniques are totally different and that’s not something that you want to have to try and remember while piss is dribbling down your legs. You can hand a straight blade to anyone and they can intuitively use it. Another thing to consider is climate, karambit originated in Indonesia which is a warm climate, if your attacker is wearing heavy clothing or several layers it can get caught up, where as stab will go straight though. You’re demonstration of the OTF shows there is just too much to go wrong and not a viable option (however cool John Wick makes them look). Just my opinion.

I have the bestech strellit. Theres one downside. The handle has such a bend in it that it deforms the fist. I dont know why they did that. Wouldve been so much better with a less extreme curve
A knife isn't a spoon. A knife is completely capable of defense against humans and/or anything else. Knives are regulated as weapons in the vast majority of US states as well as the rest of the world. There should be zero debate among adults on if a knife is capable of defense. Though, you think button locks don't tend to be a super strong lock type? Why? I know Civivi and others button locks have a small amount of contact, but look at Hogue's contact depth, it's super strong. Have you experienced any button locks fail? I haven't yet and I assumed they were much much stronger than liner locks..

I wanted to ask what are your thoughts on Gerber and CRKT knives. I know those are very basic but their the first ones you see when going to a outdoorsman shop like BIG5 or Bass pro shop. Those are the first knives I have personally owned and recently got a CIVIVI macarta coming in the mail today because of your recommendation. An overlooked benefit of a knife for personal protection is that the steel does not matter, as long as it is sharp. It is only unsheathed or opened for doing the Devil's business. Regular training is also required.

Everyone has heard the line "you should never point a gun at anything or anyone you're not willing to shoot. When it comes to using a knife in a self defense scenario however, I'm unequivocally of the opinion that it goes beyond the "willing to shoot," red line. You should never pull a knife unless/until you're intention it is to use it on them. Ideally your assailant wouldn't even be aware that you have it until you've used it and they're leaking out.
Beyond the fact that you probably wont be aware of what they're capable of, there's always the risk that the tables will turn and you'll end up being the one with a sucking chest wound, and you can guarantee that as soon as they become aware that this new variable has entered the equation, everything is instantly going to escalate and the stakes have changed to purely survival, and at that point who knows what will happen.
That's my 2¢ at least.
I edc the cold steel tanto (san mai). Long enough to feel safe if theres even slightly longer knife against me, and when it comes to knife vs knife, my goal would be to punish the knife arm of my opponent, strike against strike would make the attacker drop his knife, attacker without knife would get hit every time he gets too close. And do I have any real knife self defence experience? No! I have never needes to use any violence since my "childhood", but just looking at the news these days tell me that theres enough dangers outside the door, that are ready to hurt me just for my wallet and such.
If you're from Canada, in the eyes of the law, if you admit your knife is for self defense, you're carrying an illegal weapon and it will be confiscated. Your knife is for work and daily tasks. The knife laws are very gray here.
And to everyone, if you're outnumbered and weapons are not involved, do not draw a knife as it can be used against you. Most people will not win a fight where they're outnumbered with just a knife. Run or take the ass kicking.

That goes for most knives, I think they are exactly what they advertise to be, a hard use cutting tool
That’s why you get them drilled and tapped for left hand carry and carry with the wave facing forward in your right pocket so you can wave it right out into reverse grip with minimal adjustment

I got out of my truck last night in San Francisco (traveling/Valentines dinner) and went to feed the meter and a girl rushed up to me with a kerambit . Backing I put distance and shouted STOP. She explained that someone was chasing her and a guy was pulled over up the street yelling at her. I told her to get walking and I’d watch the guy to make certain he didn’t follow. She was probably a hooker, deal gone bad. I’ve had edged weapons training and did have a Button Lock Elementum, but I had what I think is a better weapon that I was at ready with,… that’s a hickory walking cane. The guy threat stayed in his car on the other side of the street for quite a while,… bleeding? The city is a sewer.

I believe the only way a knife can be an effective self defense blade is if you can get it into action with one movement. So either a wave type or fixed. I carry both fixed and a ganzo adimanti. I have tremors so i don't carry my gun yet until i train more. God help who lays hands on me. I've been taking a knife and mma class.

@Ace King i carry it all. I feel having only one form of defense limits you. Everything has its time and place. Never said pepper spray was better for defense. I just said it's better than bear spray. I have multiple physical problems so i won't fight if i don't have to. If spraying something allows me to get away its better than fighting a person or animal. If a dog is attacking my dog i will get up close and spray it. That way i don't hurt my son or dog. If you have a good brand and it's stream form not mist wind affects it less
