This video started my lean journey at home and at work. Made me a better person and continously inspiring me to be better to what I do. Thank you Paul and to all the people who believe sharing is a fun way to make a difference in our life.
Thanks to these videos and the 2 second lean audio book we have started our lean journey with our first morning meeting last week. Thanks Paul and fastcap for making lean so accessible.
I was just kinda stunned when one of my colleagues told me to slow done with my ideas because I am making them waste their time. For me I was just trying to share what I learn from you on them hoping it will have the same impact but I guess I need to refine my process so they might buy in next time. I am recently promoted as an assistant Group Lead, and I owe this opportunity of new learning to all your teachings. Thanks again Paul and Fastcap.
Great talk, Paul! The past hour and 37 minutes have definitely NOT been a waste! You're a much cooler person than I knew. It's great to learn a little more about you and how you operate.
Anyone in So-cal looking for a Manufacturing engineering intern? I am now a lean fanatic! Great video Paul, lean will help me with my everyday life and getting through this last year of college, academically and professionally.
Hi Paul! Stunning video presentation above and have learned from every video viewed. I believe my dear Father was natural Lean in personality and work ethic. I have a poignant remembrance as a youngster growing up on a wheat ranch in eastern Oregon (dad was a John Deere man :). I was struggling one day and implored of my dad, "Dad I can't work any harder". He looked down at me an stated calmly, "it's not about working harder, but working smarter: This was an epiphany to me as a child and has stayed with me my whole life as well as other sound proverbs he taught me. I am 59 and would have loved to work for you or a company based on this philosophy. Since I am already employed at a job I love, I will employ 'Lean' principles to make my job simpler, smarter, with less 'waste' and also becoming a more productive employee with the bottom line of serving 'my customers' which are the students and staff I love. Thank you!
The best ever video I have watched in my life. I was making a presentation on Lean for a training session, but now I realize where we have gone wrong! I simply deleted the whole set of slides which was filled with Lean tools which makes lean so complicated. Instead I found some great videos and bunch of exercises for my students to understand lean. Guess i'm ready for the training. :D Thank you Paul for the Eye opening !
+FastCap Great to hear from you Paul ! All your videos kept me awake till 6am today from last night. I was that excited to be in the correct direction. :D
Achinthya thank you so much for the kind words, if you make lean simple, fun and practical you will not believe what can happen it will take on a life of its own. Lean should effect everything thing you do everyday, focus on all the waste you generate and eliminate it everyday and you will be a magnetic for excellence. I wish u all the best on your lean journey! Paul
I love this video. I have been told if you want to be successful you learn from someone that is successful. I want to teach my friends the LEAN method to help them improve daily! Thank you Paul!!!!!!!
you are correct i have been try to do this but sometimes forget....bad process! i am adding a label on the inside of my laptop....repeat the question. thanks for the great suggestion.
Thank you for this inspiring video to take charge of change using the Lean concept. Lean can be used in our ways of thinking, cutting waste in movement be it human or mechanic and in any area of your life. Like the video says, improvements in anything. When Lean is backed with the juices of creativity and backed by sheer determination, amazing results happen.
I’ve been to the Taylor Guitar factory in El Cajon. I noticed the vibe of your workplace (cleanliness, pace, shop floor attitude, open areas, etc.) is so similar to Taylor. Now it makes sense!
Hi Paul, I have a question, is overproduction of ideas for improvement a kind waste too? If yes, how can we eliminate it and continously improve it. Thanks!
Les: If there is any waste that is tolerable, it is exploration and learning. If we focus on all the other waste, this will be small potatoes. Remember everything is a process and every process can be continually improved. Paul
Well I couldn't agree with you more about restaurants being wasteful. I think it is fantastic that you have found a way to continuously improve. I'd love to see a video of those improvements. Paul
As a teachers aide in Industrial Design and Technology with a career in HVAC and construction the Lean system encapsulates for the masses what I have endeavoured to implement in every project. Do it with less materials in a shorter time frame and make it more efficient and from that comes the added extra of greater job satisfaction .
Brendan You are absolutely correct. Goal is to make work more enjoyable and more satisfying. To engage the entire human spirit in work the mind the emotion and the body. I'm doing so we become excellent stewards of all the gifts that I've been given us.
I like the example of the F1 team... fast with a relaxed demeanor, lean should not induce anxiety and tension, it should liberate you from them. Noted in the relaxed behaviour of Pauls Staff.
It is really good to see the improvements done to machines ( like in CNC machine and printer thing). But, there is a one negative thing I see in those improvements. For an example, is the printer tray is designed in a way as it can bear with the stress which is applied by the cable? in the CNC machine, did you think about the safety and how the improvement long term effect the relevant system of the machine? sometimes, if something happens to the machine because of improvement, warranty does not cover it.
Hi Paul, this is absolutely the best of the best videos I have come across in my searches on the net. Truly highly inspiring. Will surely be looking all of the other content You have available. Regards Clinton
Hi Paul.. first, happy holidays season!; second, I should say that watching some of your videos reaffirms the fact that the are always cool guys to interact and work with. And not only because of the "lean philosophy" (which I consider is one of the most useful ones in general), but also for the "sharing/teaching philosophy" so that more people seize the experience and knowledge.. I am studying a postgraduate course at the moment in Liverpool, UK, but I am from Guanajuato-Mexico, so if you happen to have some businesses or work-acquaintances around these places please let me know, as I consider it interesting getting to know more people, and moreover working with that people, that share ideas like yours. Regards. Emmanuel
Emmanuel, Ashley Bailey at Klime-Ezee www.klime-ezee.com/ in Manchester is a great example of what lean should look like. if you're ever up that way, I'm sure he'd love to show you his place! Paul
Great video guys!! Been sharing it with many people. Does anyone have the PDFs of the heets on the wall by minute 48:25? They are amazingly simple and straightforward, would love to print them out. Tried copying them from the screen, but the video quality is too low. Thanks!
Wow, that was a great video. The only thing I would say is that being lean reduces fear. If you get worried about the future, just concentrate on being lean.
Sergio don't think of lean in terms of specific to any one industry. The lean philosophy is basically - see waste - eliminate waste thought daily continuous improvement - everything you do is a process. - all processes are filled with Waste If you give me any process in any service industry I will immediately be able to identify the waste and show you how lean apply. The reason why I can do that is because I understand what waste looks like that is the key. Once you begin to see waste you can't unsee it it's everywhere!!!!!
Paul - I listen on Stitcher every week. When you take a question from a group, can you restate the question, so us audio listeners can hear it. Otherwise, I got my partner to watch this episode. What a great introduction to Lean!
Thank you Mr. Paul.. though i am new in industry, for just 3 years.. but this is an amazing inspiration !!! and i shall surely try my best to implement as much as i can !!!
I just need to design Lean Manufacturing Simulation on SIMUL8 software, can you just suggest, how should I proceed? Right now I don't have any case study from industry as I am a College student.
Glad to know basics of lean, true words you said that it has been made so complicated now a days with lot of rocket science stuff whereas it is simple...
There are a ton of free resources on my website. paulakers.net/ I'd start with my book, 2 Second Lean, which is also availabe online for free. paulakers.net/books Sign up for my weekly emails here. bit.ly/FastCap-Subscribe Make sure to scroll down to select 2 Second Lean (weekly lean video) and The American Innovator (weekly podcast about my travel or lean adventures).
GREAT video! Because of my gratitude for all the info, I wanted to provide an idea for another office improvement... Buy extra printer drawers/trays, so each colour has its drawer. You'll just have to refill and never have to take the previous day colour out of the tray again. Greets from Belgium, Mark
+blandy60 On the page I sent a link to, it explains that Kaizen is a Japanese word which translates closely to “continuous improvement” in English. The two go hand in hand.
hello, excellent video!, how do you deal with the the times for launch, and the waste of time in "talking or gossip, watching clothes and shoes catalogs and making and drinking coffee". I think in Mexico people in their jobs waste a lot of time on this "coffe time", they start working an hour after they should .
This would be stealing from the customer and driving the cost up. It would be totally disrespectful to do this or people would never even think of doing this.
Hi Paul, Great video. I own a 19,00 S.F. millwork shop in CT and I'm looking for some training DVD's to help educate, train and inform my employees in the "Lean" manufacturing way of thinking. Any suggestions for training materials that might fit our needs? We are a 10 person shop and have incorporated several small components in Lean and am looking forward to walking to the deep end of the pool now. Thank you in advance for your help. Sincerely, Jim Dufour Connecticut Carpentry Group
Jim to start off with make sure that you read my book (2 Second Lean). It is available for free at 2secondlean.com. In your morning meetings I would read one or two pages and discuss it with your team until you get through the entire book. In addition,I would watch one video every morning from our lean library. www.fastcap.com/estore/pc/viewContent.asp?idpage=88 I think this will serve as an excellent training material and discussion material. When you finish doing that, you should go to Gemba Academy (www.gembaacademy.com/) and sign up and start watching their lean videos. When you finish all that, email me at paul@fastcap.com to figure out what to do next! Thanks, Paul
Your the best!! Thanks for helping me with putting the proper steps in place. It's tough to figure out what to stat with first. Kind of like the Chicken and egg, what came first!! Keep you posted :o)
Thanks for the video. This will be a tremendous help to us. I have been trying to get our team to be lean for years and have felt like I was the only one doing it. I believe this will help to get our team more engaged. At 30 minutes in you talk about morning meetings and communicating important info over and over again. Could you elaborate a little more on the structure of these meetings?
Thank you, I have an Audible copy but didn't finish it yet. I downloaded the Ebook to go along with it. Thank you for offering them at no charge. Your content is fantastic and very valuable.
Count of "let me show you this" to my clients... 17, people reached... >110 Conversation on a Gemba.. what is your changeover time? Oh it's about 45 minutes which is around industry standard. A few hours later.... "To a Lean thinker, industry standards are a JOKE!" - GOTCHA! Thanks Paul, you make my job sooo much easier!
Sorry for the delayed Reply Paul... I have shown the Wiremold portion of this video to 17 'Lean Kick-off' meetings - over 110 people saw the video and I didn't see anyone not blown away. And, when I asked a potential client what their changeover time was, they said "about 45 minutes, around industry standard"... they are now thinking again!
Thank you, thank you. One of the most amazing video in a long time. Thats the way I have been thinking in a long time, thank you to give me the motivation to do it.
Hey Paul! I'm becoming a huge fan of your videos and I'm going to read your book next. I'm going to create my first video Work Instruction this week. Keep up the great work!
40:00 Only purpose for being in business is to serve the customer. 54:27 Absorbing $80k large customer orders 1:00:00 Amazon is a mega lean company 1:28:52 The shop floor is the best place to learn lean
iam finishing industrial Engineer, man that´s amazing ... could even pay to be in that kind of enviroment with a person that loves lean as much as I do
FastCap Iam workinf in a company that makes kitchens and closets, but they are manufacturing "the old way" .would love to change but you need empowerment
To quote chapter 20 in my book "'My boss doesn’t get it and won’t support what I’m trying to do.' My reply is always the same; 'focus on yourself, develop your own area of influence and be relentless about continuous improvement in your life. If you adopt this approach, in short order you will not only rise up and be promoted, but you will eventually be the leader of your organization or another thoughtful organization that understands the power of true Lean leadership.'" To read my book for free, go to this link. 2secondlean.com/listen-now Paul
Hi Paul! I like your video, It's very rich in information. Yet, I have a question please, You said for lean thinkers, Industry standards are a joke, While the impovements made by your employees are due to their knowing puting in consideration the Industry standards, A contradiction, isn't it ?!
+Abdelillah Aboumalik I guess what I'm really trying to say is if you think you're doing good because your meeting industry standards or a little bit above industry standards, you don't really understand continuous improvement. Continues improvement will deliver results exponentially greater the industry standards. Paul
FastCap i just saw your video and i have a suggestion for you. please use a remote presentation operator to save your time during your presentations. just another lean idea. Have a good day
We have many resources for you. Please check out 2secondlean.com. You have watch our videos and listen to my book. Start small and keep it simple. Paul
Paul, great video! Finally someone is preaching results are a derivative of the culture! Keep fighting the good fight! BTW as a fellow waste hound I might offer you some advice on your mail. You are over processing by bringing the junk mail into your house, take your trash can to the mailbox and sort it there! You will get some strange looks from the neighbors but you are not going through it and handling it multiple times!
Or just use an digital mail service.. never more physical mail or advertising in the home, they can also be automatic sorted so you do not see them at all. ;)
I studied Lean Manufacturing, I held Kaizen events I bought the 5S theory and Lean Manufacturing techniques hook line and sinker, same with continuous improvement. and i really thought it was great, numbers were improving, everyone was busy and paying close attention to the process. I noticed one day as i was watching the people work it looked like a sweat shop, the human factor was GONE! everyone hated their jobs but were scared to leave because, well "look at the fancy way we do things this jobs my CAREER!" yeah right! Management needs to get off there ass and get involved with the company! don't hide behind HR get on the floor and touch and feel the work being done. Treat these employees like people not machines you "Continuously improve" Lean Manufacturing takes away any ownership of the employees job, as little as it might be. Being able to put his tools or work supplies where he wants as an example. Its a crock! the reality is some people are meant to lead! some people are meant to follow the people that lead! If your a true leader the benefits from the quality of your followers will supersede any 5S or Lean training your could shove down their throat. If your a true leader you LEAD you don't depend on a goddamn book, or program someone came up with to save your following ass. I'm sorry thats my opinion on this
You are so right. I work for a tier one BMW supplier and the shop floor is hell now after lean. Funny thing is everyone wants to go to injection. its the only place that does not have super high turn over
Hi Paul, Great presentation! I shared it with a number of people including my sister who leads 50 people in a non-profit for at risk kids and she is going to share it with her bosses and hopefully make some really positive and effective changes in reducing waste in the entire organization. Btw, if you've never read Power vs Force I'd highly recommend it - endorsed by Sam Walton, Mother Teresa, Lee Iacocca and Wayne Dyer. Will be sending you my own innovation idea soon. Eric
38:00 Only one goal at company is to *serve the customer.* Will fall down on the knife to make sure the customer is served. Do such an outrageous job of serving the customer that they make millions of dollars every year. Have not raised prices in six years (like Hoy Fong Sriracha). 39:50 When you pick up the phone or answer an email, you’re not doing it for you-you’re doing it to serve the customer. 41:42 Toyota doesn’t care about the next engineering feat, factory their opening up, sales or marketing program-only cares about teaching and training people and creating a culture of continuous improvement. 54:27 Absorbing customer orders as large as $80k 1:05:00 Paul studied and worked in Germany
I remember attending this lecture like it was yesterday, great learning from you paul!
Dear Paul ,You are awesome, I apply what I learned from you every day at work and teach it to my team.

All the details can be found in my book. Electronic versions are available at no charge on my website. paulakers.net/books/2-second-lean
Thank you, I have an Audible copy but didn't finish it yet. I downloaded the Ebook to go along with it. Thank you for offering them at no charge. Your content is fantastic and very valuable.
I am glad that I have seen this video. Thank you for your presentation. Every company should replace the word Manufacturing with lean Manufacturing.
Count of "let me show you this" to my clients... 17, people reached... >110
Conversation on a Gemba.. what is your changeover time? Oh it's about 45 minutes which is around industry standard.
A few hours later.... "To a Lean thinker, industry standards are a JOKE!" - GOTCHA!
Thanks Paul, you make my job sooo much easier!
Lean 4 Business Sorry, I don't follow...
Super. We are constantly rethinking that and challenging ourselves!
Where can you but your book in uk
Thanks
Michael

Thanks for your kind words! Lean and Industrial Engineer will be a great combination! Paul
If you adopt this approach, in short order you will not only rise
up and be promoted, but you will eventually be the leader of your organization or another thoughtful organization that understands the power of true Lean leadership.'" To read my book for free, go to this link. 2secondlean.com/listen-now

FastCap thanks a lot... greetings from Costa Rica
You're very welcome! Paul
Paul
Adam Herman Just north of San Francisco. Across the bay, Northeast on a hill. I can't remember the name, but it is very well known. Paul
in India we have huge and heavy waste all across. with this methods we would further improvise our economy.
We all a so much to learn and improve!
Absolutely. I am from India too. TPS is like God material. And this video is like bhagwad Geeta.
My pleasure Brian. Paul
Great stuff, thanks a lot!

Hahahaa Thats awesome! hahaha I love that truck example :)
Thank you for this full load of energy, enthusiasm and advice. If you are not a speaker, I am Donald Duck!
+Marco Cirillo Thanks for your kind words, Marco!
Or just use an digital mail service.. never more physical mail or advertising in the home, they can also be automatic sorted so you do not see them at all. ;)
Good idea Markus!
great work
Thanks!
Such Nice video, I am also learn something new from this. Thanks
Thanks Mahendra!
It's great honor for me If I become a part of this great company.
I'm sorry thats my opinion on this
William, that's the beauty of life. Everyone has an opinion. Paul
You are so right. I work for a tier one BMW supplier and the shop floor is hell now after lean. Funny thing is everyone wants to go to injection. its the only place that does not have super high turn over
F1 teams are getting better, the pit stops are now in the 2.5 second neighborhood. Continuous Improvement
Thanks, its that simple :)

Eric
Thanks Eric. Keep me posted on your sister's work to implement lean. I'm looking forward to your innovation! Paul
beautiful thank you.
+S Ramesh HR Mentor, HRD Centre. Your welcome!
54:27 Absorbing customer orders as large as $80k
1:05:00 Paul studied and worked in Germany
Wow! Simply WoW!!
hmjoshi29 Thanks!!! Paul
