Elianne Bororing Dan was essentially the Daenerys of his time and genre. Didn’t 100% make sense for the character, and requires a lot of internal justification on the part of the actor to make it happen convincingly enough

What Penn said about Gossip Girl being 'futuristic' in a way really made me think. I mean, social media weren't really a thing back then and even when the show ended years later, they still weren't that relevant.
But looking back now, Gossip Girl predicted so many phenomenons: in the show, normal teenagers became famous without a real talent (they were what we call influencers now), people had unhealthy obsessions with them, they were 'cancelled' and/or deemed 'problematic' more times than I can count... and most importantly, the anonymity that Gossip Girl - not just Dan, but all the people who had sent videos, receipts and scoops - had, allowed GG to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. Ring any bells?
Maybe Gossip Girl didn't age well and it wouldn't be as big of a hit today, but it's interesting to see how relevant it is. It tells a lot about society.
As Penn said, it was a form of escapism back then, but that need to escape is, if possible, even more intense today. We went from hyperfixating on fictional characters to real people, which is dangerous because we don't think of them as such.

Armie Danes well...it didn’t age well, looking back from today, it had so many social flaws, painting the famous and wealthy as the gold expectation of beauty and behavior. They were all toxic, they reduced women, more times than not, to their clothes and who they slept with. The cast was what tv looked like back in the 90s, which is unrealistic considering that the majority of the population is a wide variety of races. I’m not blaming the show not saying it was bad, all I’m saying is that it fits it’s time and a show like that would no longer hold its own today.

@@lorenaar4442 I mean I feel like that's true for a lot of actors because it's such a difficult trade-off. if you're successful you'll always have to give up a lot of privacy, which can't be easy & it sucks that to pursue your dream and do well at it there is such a big sacrifice that needs to be made. Because most actors won't want 'fame' as a goal, but if you are not famous it is very hard to be a successful actor

I love how Penn says Blake's name and not like "my ex and I" and I love that he doesn't seem awkward to mention her from time to time in this interview. He doesn't have an ounce of bitterness in him like he and Blake are in good terms today. He also sounds so intelligent and articulate and you can see that he really puts his mind and soul in his art as an actor. As for Chace, he seems so sweet, a little shy and reserved and mostly lets Penn do the talking. But you can see how well they get along and how much love they have for each other. Here's hoping that Chace would make a guest appearance on "You" and Penn on "The Boys"!
Penn is extremely intelligent! He graduated high school at 14 and started collage before he was 18. He's super nice, very down to earth and a huge activist for women's rights etc.
Blake and Penn both got married and have children so they moved beyond it. I mean when BOTH are married with children and both seem VERY happy then why to be bitter. Like I wouldn't be bitter about my ex if I found someone just as he did. Anyway, generally actors on those shows aren't best friends and Gossip girl the chemistry was there only in season one and maybe season two. Now if you want real actors chemistry look at One Tree hill Sophia and Hilaire are so close and they have a functioning connection.

I like that Pen addressed the fact that most of his acting work on YOU is just basically staring into space 🤣 i remember seeing a clip on Twitter of Joe without the voiceover. And it's just him staring blankly and maybe shifting his gaze once in a while and it was hilarious. So it really put into perspective how most of his work was voiceover.
On the other hand it was really emotional and triggering in a way to watch the vulnerability that Chace brought to The Deep- like I didn't know how to feel when he got his comeuppance. The character deserved it in a way but it still made me deeply uncomfortable to watch him go through it.
So great job from the two of them in their respective gigs

@@yaswmn From what I've read over the years Blake and Leighton have never been good friends off set. As for Ed- there were some allegations against him so who knows. Although I know that Leighton and Ed were good friends outside of GG.
Also, Penn and Chace said that they haven't talked in a long time. They were invited to do this. It's hard sometimes to keep in touch when you no longer see each other every single day. Both of them are on successful projects and Penn has a family.
The only show ive seen of ed was golden white or something like that and it was pretty funny I think

I still can't believe that they're going to try to reboot Gossip Girl.
It worked back then because of the timing and because of the tv landscape in that decade. Like they pointed out in this interview it really tapped into the social network and rumor/cancel culture before it was even a thing.
So maybe the updated Gossip Girl will have a slightly more contemporary take but I feel like it won't have the heart of the original. I don't know, there was just something about that cast, and that over the top storyline that I feel cannot be reproduced now. And I just don't want a dark take on Gossip Girl either. I don't want to watch something between Riverdale and 13 Reasons Why which is what I fear we may end up getting

i feel like gossip girl won’t work now because it’s too … realistic. like the whole idea of “influencers” and social media being everywhere was so strange and not that common at the time of the show (even by the end of s6 in 2012) but now we have so many people who are famous for nothing and followed everywhere that it’s just not the same because we are living it

That's arguable, Ed is a solid actor, he murders it on the episode of Bart's funeral and he is also good in White Gold. So is Penn and all the actors were actually good.

And maybe you think so because you don't like Chuck but most people love Chuck including me. Dan was so over hated, I would take dan at his absolute worst in season 6 over chuck any day. I think Ed is kinda a stale actor aside from a few episodes.

I never watched Gossip Girl and my introductions to both of these men are their current shows. Penn is wonderfully thoughtful. There is such purpose behind what he says and I like that he is not concerned with the surface. You can tell he puts thought not just into the “how” and “what,” but also the “why” and a deeper meaning. I love to hear conversations like that.
I love it because you can tell they have a really good relationship and shared experiences and we're just witnessing two friends talking those are the best interviews tbh.

Love this interview team up! I "grew up" watching Gossip Girl as a teen and into my early 20s. It's so great to see how Chace and Pen ended up in shows that were subverting the genres of their respective shows, as opposed to the very classic tropes they played on Gossip Girl in the late 2000s.
I'm glad that they both got the opportunity to play characters very different from what they did when they were younger and flex their acting muscles. I'm a fan of both their shows- The Boys and YOU. And both shows have an interesting satirical commentary on what people have come to expect from certain characters.
