    Another benefit. With LFE+main you no longer need
    to worry about speaker selection/crossovers because it does it automatically.

    I have Denon avr x2500h reciver - Dali Oberon5 front L+R - Oberon center wocal - Oberon on wall surround - B&W M1 back surround - Dali e-12f sub (going to get one more). I got my front L+R and center at LARGE. Surrounds at SMALL. All chanel is at 80hz and sub at 120hz. Sub is LFE+main. I feel that I get a much harder punch i the bass this way. If I put speakers at SMALL I lose that hard bass punch. When you see Rambo 4 and the last scene when he is shooting the 50cal on the beach, that hard sound is what I look for, I whant to feel the sound from the 50cal. The Dali sub is doing a good job on the low frequency, I guess one more sub will help.
    Keep making videos ;)

      Hi I’m also using the Dali (zensor 7) and centre and find they do sound better when set to large. what volume (gain)on the back of your sub do you find works best for the Dali e-f12 ? Also the trim level on your amp? I’m trying to find the sweet spot. Sometimes it’s so overpowering on certain movies yet perfect for others. Thanks

    So i tried several tweaks in different rooms. When i test tweaks in a critically dampened room, my current room has around .2s ringtime, i get worse results. The only tweak that made an improvement in REW and by ear is the LFE + Main setting on the receiver. I checked levels with a SPL tool and all levels are spot on. Audyssey got almost everything spot on when it operates in a sound treated room.

    Followed your advice and set the center and side speakers to small, and fixed the sub woofer (SVS, of course) up from 40 to 80. (Might go up ten more.) WOW. Some people spend $3,000 per item. I can only afford that for the entire system. BUT, with your advice in place my system went from cheap and nasty to deep and emotional. Thanks. And thanks to SVS. Their sub woofer makes a HUGE difference!

    Just started building a theater system which I use mostly for gaming and music started with some Klipsch RP8000F’s and a 12” Klipsch RP112SW and your videos have been a tremendous help the other video where you go through in more depth with the set up of the LFE+mains turning up the Hz a little bit changing speakers to small and raising the gain a little bit COMPLETELY transformed my set up and this subwoofer. Thank you. ✌🏻

      If you audition dual PB-1000 Pro's, PB-2000 Pro's, or better, I think you will be even happier.
      Don't mix and match, and make sure you turn up the subs until it sounds overdone, and back off until it doesn't.
      To be fully transparent, I'm an SVS affiliate, and following my links can generate a commission, but I could just as easily do that for almost any other company.
      If you try them out, you'll see why I recommend the subs that I do. 🙂

    I just ordered the Definitely technology Cs9080 Center Speaker, That Center Speaker is pretty powerful with a built in 8" subwoofer and 10"upward-firing passive radiator for low bass, But I already have 2 Svs Subwoofers, Should I run the CS 9080 Center Speaker in Small or Large to take advantage of the Subwoofer in the center channel?

  • @13bcoffee

    On my older Pioneer rcr the sub option for more bass is called Plus. Front speakers must be set to Large to use this. The rcvr with front set to large will send the bass to the fronts. If you select plus, bass goes to fronts and the sub. In real life this is too much boom for me. But for something like EDM or House music the results are good.
    My normal setting has the fronts as small. I then choose either 80hz or 100hz as the crossover point. I seem to like 100hz for music better. With the fronts as small, the bass below 100hz goes to the sub.
    This will tell you that if you are looking at purchasing front towers and set your rcr front to small, there is no reason to spend extra for huge towers such as the Polk A9. All of that 100hz stuff won't be going to the A9's anyway.
    I have the A7's but I could have gone with the A3's or A5's and had a very good sound since I do use a sub. If I didnot live in a rowhome, I would be running two subs!

    Funny I’ve been trying out the same thing with my setup recently, I’m on the fence if I like Large better than Small for my mains! Added a single PB-3000 recently and in certain scenes with mid bass, setting my speakers to Large sounds fuller than Small and a 60Hz crossover.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Set it to LFE+Main regardless, and try increasing the crossover to 90. You might have to adjust the gain on the sub as a result, but the crossover is a hard limit for the subwoofer. Everything above that number is cut off pretty strongly from the sub.
      I personally think anything under 80 hertz is not giving your subwoofer much range to work with. At 60 hertz, the audible range is from 20-60, so only 40 cycles that you can hear. At 90 hertz, the audible range is 70 (90-20=70) since you can't hear below 20.
      A 40 hertz crossover is especially tragic. 40-20= only 20 hertz effective range. Almost impossible to properly integrate too.
      Adding a second sub will help a LOT. I'll even go so far as to say that you will finally hear what the PB-3000 is really all about.

      The small setting with 60hz crossover sounded good with my Accusound speakers. Sounded wrong with my Yamaha's, so I went with big+LFE and 100hz sub crossover. Keep in mind I'm running dual subwoofers as well in my setup.

      Subwoofer 101 thanks for the reply! Just trying to find the right balance. Scenes with music certainly sounds more impactful and “big” with mains set to Large, but in certain scenes mids don’t sound as good.
      For LPF for LFE, do you have any suggestions for where to set that if I’m running my mains as Large? I’ve heard set it as high as possible, or set it as high as the highest crossover... both which sound suspect

    • @midevil1980
      @midevil1980 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justplainlawr - The crossover on the sub itself should be set as high as possible, and then set appropriately in the AVR speaker crossover settings (ie 80hz). After listing to kill shot I’ve found with running my Valodyne cct 10” sub at full volume and rolled back the low pass to 100htz . It hits hard and and can keep up with my 220w each bi-amped B&W towers set to full bandwidth with out distortion. I was quick to turn down the smaller 300 watt Definitive Technology pro 800 smaller sub 8” with a passive radiator 8” sub because it wanted to bottom out. Bobby Brown don’t be cruel. The bass roll is good and deep throughout the entire song and another is Megadeath sweating bullets. Hits hard with tight accurate kick drum and around 1:50 the bass flips a 180.

    Hello, another nice video from you 🙂; I tried this on my system and with lfe+main and spakers set to large, makes bass more powerful but as you said seems to be more boomy than clear in my room with my soeakers, which are prime towers, center and elevation for surrounds and front height combined with dual SB3K subs and fronts have external amplification made by Rotel, 2x200w rms per channel;

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try increasing the gain on your subs (see Gain Hack and adjusting subs by ear). I don't notice much output difference when I do it, so your subs might benefit from a little more juice, which you should be able to get away with. With deep bass subs, you can have more bass before it sounds overdone.

    I have a five subwoofer system, with two B&W ASW675s, two B&W ASW650s and one B&W ASW4000. The 4000 is assigned the LFE spot, with the two 650s as subs, and the two 675s receive the corresponding pre-amp of the L/R speakers to handle the bass of each L/R. In this case, I set my front speakers to large, but should I still set it to LFE+mains?

    Small question but it would be great if you could answer quickly because the offer in the outlet might run out soon :P
    I have the option to buy a PB-2000 with 4Set Soundpath Absorber for almost the price of a PB-1000. But you always bring up that duals are so much better than one.
    So my question is would it be a good idea to get a PB-2000 and later a PB-1000 (300-500W + 500-1100W together)? Or would that even be detrimental to the sound.

      A guy on uk 🇬🇧 AV forums sent me this just now... dunno whose right or wrong? 😂. LFE + Main sends full bass frequencies to your front speakers as well as the sub. Just set LFE only. Small does not mean the physical size of the speaker, it's means that they cannot reproduce a great range of frequencies. The reasons you set speakers to small, even large floorstanders, is so the sub woofer can handle all the low frequencies under a crossover point.

      Walter Scott wow big speakers in a small room. Those monitors are nice indeed. I’ve heard these and they sound great but most monitors and tower speakers can’t handle deep bass. Most roll off at 60-40 hertz. Are you using any dedicated subwoofer at all?
      If not start with one SVS pb1000 with 300 watts. If you want more hard hitting base then upgrade to SVS pb 2000. It has an 12” woofer with 500 rms. Personally I can’t decide between the svs pb 1000 or 2000 because I want two of them. $500 difference with discount between the two.

      I have a strong preference for ported subs, and I would do either dual PB-1000's or dual PB-2000's.
      Can't afford dual PB-2000's? Then easily, dual PB-1000's would be my pick. Go factory direct and upgrade within a year if you need to, while having truly competent bass in the meantime.
      What are you doing in your studio? Content can make a difference. Price range is also a consideration.
      If you don't have subwoofer LFE RCA Jack's, the PB-1000 has line level in, and the PB-2000's don't.
      Also, being in a small room, definitely sit away from the walls. Boundary gain will bloat the bass.

      I set my satellite or elevation speakers at 150 hertz.
      I like 90 on towers, and 90-120 on Bookshelf speakers, depending on how they do.
      Takes the stress off of the AVR, and your subs have more to work with.
      You still get signal to your main speakers, all the way down, just less power.
      They still contribute to the bass, so you aren't really losing anything.
      New rule of thumb for me, increase the crossover until you no longer notice a benefit. It's ALWAYS higher than the rated response of the speaker in question.

Unhooked 215s and now my original setup after calibrations and settings is lacking and less responsive except for the subs in the towers. As in my listening volume at 40 has all subs hitting but the floor subs def have less Hawaiian punch then before, towers are still strong. Turn the volume down to 20 and the floor subs pick up nothing and will power off but the towers still have enough the shake stuff. Connections, receiver to floor subs, each sub y split to tower sub. At low volume only tower subs work. All of this is my original setup and didnt do this until i unhooked it to try new subs. I ty you for your video either way they helped me do the ole diy bass for dummies when i started.

    Great content bro , I'm currently running a 5.0 setup using Def Tech 9000 series speakers . Up front I have bp9060 towers and CS 9960 center , rears are the bp9020 towers . My beef with setup is that I have 4 subs but I am only able to utilize the 2 up front . When watching movies the surround sounds great very immersive. When playing music I loose the ability to utilize my center and my rears . How can I get everything playing? I have the Denon x4500 receiver. I run my towers and center in Large settings. If you can help me out it would be appreciated.

      You probably figured this out already but if you haven't. The the botton on your remote that says music, hit that. You'll see on your TV or your receiver or both, the option to choose many options. Multichannel is what you want for all channels stero. Or you can go to options on your remote and select all channels stero. That'll do the same but it will need changed back manually again unlike the first choice. Hope that helped.

    Love your bass hack videos, but i have a question. Many ppl likes Dynamic eq, but dont u notice that the center channel is worst with it on. It like it gets darker i some way.
    Would Love a respons from all of you who like dyn eq On
    Keep up the awesome work!

      Thanks! I suppose it could depend on the center that you are running. See my Speaker Level Hack, using the Eagles Farewell 1 Tour Blu Ray can really help you get the levels right after room correction.

      Dynamic EQ is meant for low volume listening. It pumps up the surrounds as well.

    I just tried this using the same song and I have SVS Ultra bookshelves and I'm never doing it again, I had to stop really fast because I could smell a burning smell coming out of my speakers, the left was the worst and I only had it at -10.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, yeah this is for towers and subs only. That song hits WAY below the rated response of the Ultra Books, and -10 is going pretty hot. I definitely wouldn't do that again! Burning smell from speakers is not good, just as a general rule.😄

    I have def tech 9080x towers front 9060 towers rear and 9060 center. And two pb1000. When i change the speaker to small i feel like the dialogue is there but my bass is lost in the midrange. But turning it on large/ lfe+main sounds better (movie standpoint) ive always noticed everyforum says set to small but these speakers do not sound well when set to small. But i also dont wanna reatrict my pb1000's if i am doing that by setting to large and or killing my denon x4500h because of power draw. Any advice? My cross over for speakers are at 80hz besisdes the atmos which is 150hz. My phase on my front sub is 0 and rear sub at 180 should i change something?

    Nice video! I have a quik quastion, I have a denon x6300h with 2 sub outs but how does it work when I hook up 2 of them? Is he lfe channel mono or stereo?
    I am asking because I have a new svs sub but I am not sure if I hook up my old sub if that will hold the svs back if the lfe channel is stereo

      Bear's Blend no sir you will be fine. It’s a mono output. Even for folks that only have one rca subwoofer they can daisy chain and running as many subs as you want safely and without loss of signal between each subwoofer.

      Yeah, unmatched duals usually still sound better than a single subwoofer. That said, for some reason it seems like the sound quality is skewed towards the weaker sub.
      Great example was the PB-16 Ultra. I ran it with a lower powered 15", and I was luke warm on the performance. When I got the second PB 16 Ultra and removed the 15, the performance was definitely noticable.
      The impact went from good to truly outstanding. Why? I could only speculate, but it was not subtle. That's an extreme example, but you get the idea.
      In my opinion, the weaker sub drags down better subs, but it's probably still better than a single subwoofer.

    Not sure I understand exactly what this hack is. I’m not completely sure that the poster has any idea what he’s talking about. I would first recommend reading your receiver’s owner’s manual and from there go to AVS Forum, Audiogon, etc. You should also always remember, especially when dealing with audio, just how powerful the ‘power of persuasion’ can be. Don’t get me wrong audio is a great hobby just be sure the person advising you knows what they’re talking about. Have fun on your journey.

      A lot of great information. Can you do something on two channel audio. What is the best setting on a Denon? I tried to adjust the equalizer for Better Sound and now my regular programming sounds boomy. Do I need to run room correction again? Should I even use the equalizer at all? I want my music to sound good but I don't want to mess up my movies and other programming.

    Hi,
    I’ve been upgrading my theater recently. I bought a new 4K 75” TCL tv and 4K pass through Onkyo tx-nr 797 a/v receiver. Now looking to upgrade my old Valodyne cct 10”subwoofer and definitive technology pro 800. The sound is powerful and deep but now I want a matching pair of new subs. I’ve been doing a lot of research on your channel and others. I’ve discovered SVS subs are the best bang for the buck. I like the idea of upgrading to the svs pb1000 10” sub since I already have an 10” ported and a 8” with a 8” passive radiator. My theater hits hard for movies and music with these two but I want more detail in bass. My question is, how much harder does the svs pb2000 hit compared to the svs pb1000 Or sb1000 subwoofer.? I want to buy two matching but the price difference between 1000 & 2000 is a lot to me. 500 more for the pair to be exact. I’m on a budget and I know the svs company is great company especially knowing they have the bill of rights and I can upgrade within a year as long as I pay shipping. The svs pb 2000 has a 12” sub with 200 more watts is tempting.

      In your case, I would absolutely do dual PB-1000's, definitely do my Gain Hack, and upgrade within a year if you can.
      Be sure to go factory direct to get the 1 year trade up. My links are factory direct, if you are interested in supporting the channel. If not, no worries.
      The difference between the PB-1000 and PB-2000 is pretty price proportionate. It sounds like a $500 difference in my opinion.
      Stronger impact, and truly audibly full range, going deeper than you can hear.
      The PB-1000's really close though, they only go quiet at 19 hertz, but have the same depth signature as the PB-2000's. You wouldn't be "suffering" with dual PB-1000's. 😄
      Depending on your hearing, you might not even be able to hear the extra extension, but the impact and control will be noticeable.
      Hopefully that helps!

      Thank you sir for some great feedback. I will continue to save up and more than likely go for the duel pb2000 to fill this large living room with solid bass.

    this channel is being repetitive, it's only about SVS ''they're the best, they sound that way, this way'' blah, blah... I'm not saying they're not great but there's a lot more similar and better stuff on the market, Velodyne, JL's Fathoms and Gothams, B&W, Martin Logan, REL...
