    Have you had TSH checked before? How about other thyroid markers? What patterns do your labs follow? Looking forward to chatting with you!

      Howdy Doctor
      I recently had my levels checked due to the fact that my cognitive process was getting slow and when I did my physical fitness program I would not recover within the normal parameters.
      My T4 is at 1.7 with a total of 12.5 TSH I am 60 years of age male and I am usually physical fit until this happened. My nutrition is on the healthy side and have also learned that the nightshade family can cause a bad TSH result, I have been consuming potato, eggplant, tomato, bok choy, tofu and many other "vegetables" daily in hopes of a better nutritional intake. I am by no means a vegan or vegetarian however I could if my health depends on the commitment on doing so.
      My physician has prescribed levothyroxine .25mcg.
      I am feeling a bit better but getting back into my daily routine has been taxing.
      Any suggestions you can offer are appreciated.

      @@rusty-ole-boomstick1268 Hi Mike, for whatever reason I missed your comment and I apologize! I know it was from several months ago, but I wanted to make sure to answer it anyways in case you're still working on things.
      Sometimes TSH can increase as a normal function of aging, so I would be curious to see what your exact symptoms were. The T4 you described looks to be normal. For my male patients who are above 60, I like to make sure they're getting enough protein (>130 grams depending on body size), eating foods that work for them and don't cause digestive symptoms, mixing in some resistance training to tolerance, and are of a healthy weight.
      Again, my apologies for missing your comment! Feel free to respond back if you have any other questions. Hope you're doing well and feeling better lately!

      @@manja546 Just to be clear, is that free T4 and are the units pmol/L? To me the TSH looks a little high and so does the free T4. It would be helpful to know the other thyroid labs you had checked to give you better feedback. Things like total T4, free T3, total T3, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. Additionally, it may be a good idea to get another blood draw to establish a pattern and see what direction those markers are trending in. Let me know if this helps!

      Hello! So last week I went to the doctor and my tsh was 4.58 and T4 15. I have a hard time breathing and my heart rate rises easily. I also feel very tired and my stomach bloats. I am on a fodmap diet and it doesnt help. I'm not overweight and I exercise a lot. My question is, can chronic stress and anxiety raise tsh levels? I have had physical stress symptoms every day for two years. There is no hypothyroidism in my family and I am 23 years old.

    Thank you dear doctor. My TSH is elevated at 5.3 and my doctor wants to put me on hormone medication for my thyroid, however my T3 and T4 are at normal range. I’ve never had issues with my thyroid. I just lost both my husband and my mother and I am under severe emotional stress and depression….. I am engulfed in grief. I’m 43 and I’m not eating at all, I barely eat to stay alive and I’m losing weight very quickly. I believe all these issues have caused my elevated TSH 😢

      @DrBradBodle  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Hansi, unfortunately, that seems to be the case everywhere. Of course, there are outliers with individual doctors who are more interested in looking at the whole picture when it comes to a patient's health, but that's typically rare. It's frustrating and I don't know exactly why it happens, especially when patients come back to their doctor and tell them that they're not feeling better. I hope you can get some better help soon! Please let me know if I can help with any questions.

      I'm happy I could help Mahasweta! If the TSH remains high on follow up with your doctor, you're going to want to continue to track your T4 and T3. For some people the TSH will resolve, for others it may be a sign that you're in the early stages of thyroid dysfunction. Hope you're doing well! Let me know if you have any questions!

    This is incredibly helpful! I have had two blood tests (a year apart) come back as Subclinical Hypothyroid. My question is - how long do you recommend waiting to see if your body will resolve subclinical hypothyroid on its own before taking some action to intervene?

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Allison! I'm so happy the video was helpful to you! In my practice, I usually like follow up within 6-8 weeks, but it wouldn't be unusual for some doctors to do a 3 month check-in. Both would work fine and give you a better idea of the trend. The big thing here is correlating the labs with your symptoms. If you're not feeling well and you have back to back labs with elevated TSH, then it might be worth it to start making some changes. Hope this helps!

    Thanks a lot sir, it's really explained neatly. I am diagnosed diabetes since 3 months. It's started with hba1c 9 and now reduced to 7.8 in 3 months. But I was loosing weight regularly. Yesterday when tested for thyroid. It came TSH of 13 with T3 and T4 normal. I don't any symptoms either for diabetes or thyroid until now. Please advise how to treat this TSH and my weight loss or diabetes is due to TSH? Thanks

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Umesh, first of all, congrats on the weight loss and improved lab markers, that's awesome!! Keep up the good work 👍
      To answer your question regarding the TSH, weight loss can change our hormones in a number of ways that can be hard to predict. This is one of those scenarios where I would repeat testing to see if the TSH stays high. If it does, depending on your symptoms, you and your doctor can decide to take action or wait and watch. As long as you're not having symptoms, you might want to wait until your weight stabilizes to give you a more accurate picture.
      Hope this helps! Let me know if I can clarify anything for you.

I am 65 male thin and fit lost 50 lbs from 215 lbs 4 years ago to 165 lbs today. I do low carb high fat/protein diet lifestyle. My Doc just says I'm Hypothyroid and because of the numbers wants me on Thyroid Meds for the rest of my life and refuses to do a full Thyroid panel. I have no symptoms and feel great ! I need to find the root cause before I commit to such a life changing thing. Any advice would be helpful .

      Hey Michael, thanks for the message! I'm with you on his and personally I'd also like more info before making a decision on medication. Hi Dr Brad, thankyou very much explaining so well.
    I wanted to check if the TSH is >60 and the t3 and t4 tests are not done, should we continue taking thyroxine medicine. There are symptoms like dry skin, and metabolic issues. How does thyroid affect fertility in the long run ?

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! You're welcome! Yes, most doctors would have you continue with your medication is TSH is above 60 (the threshold for this is typically around 10), even with normal T4 and T3. However, it sounds like there might be something else going on here since the TSH isn't resolving with adequate hormone levels. It might not be a bad idea to get a full thyroid panel including thyroid antibodies (TPO antibodies and Tg antibodies) to see if anything else is abnormal. Low thyroid function can impact fertility as it is a very metabolically demanding process to maintain and grow the fetus. Hope this answers your questions! Let me know if I can assist with anything else!

Last year I started having sever muscle pain. It got so bad in my legs at night I'd wake up in tears. My doctor lowered my dose to 25. Still pain. @DrBradBodle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jason, thanks for the kind feedback! It's hard to say. Sometimes when people have normal T4 and T3 levels adding hormone can fix the TSH, but then people have too much thyroid hormone in their system and can struggle with hyper-thyroid symptoms. Other times, it can be ok. Just be aware that both are possible and you'll want to talk through strategies with your doc. At the same time, it might be helpful to check thyroid antibodies (TPO antibodies and Tg antibodies) to see if autoimmunity is contributing to the changes in TSH. Hope this helps! Thanks again!

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! It wouldn't Be unusual or impossible for TSH levels to fluctuate within a day depending on changes in other aspects of our physiology. In fact, TSH normally has a diurnal rhythm with a peak at midnight and the low point in the late afternoon. An inflammatory reaction or immune system change because of increased stressors could easily impact levels. I don't think blood sausage would be a huge factor here, but I could be wrong. Hope this helps!

    Thank you Dr.Brad for making this informative video. I have high TSH 45 so is it necessary to take medication for whole life? I feel frustrated when I have to daily take medication. I simply skipped my medication and my TSH is now increased to 45. Can I get any remedy for controlling TSH without taking medicine? Thank you in advance.

      Hi Trupti, you're welcome! I'm glad you liked the video. TSH can change depending on a variety of health factors and as long as you're working with your doctor to address the root cause of your thyroid problems, then it's possible you might not need medication some day. That's not the case for everyone, but this is where a full thyroid lab panel (in my office that includes TSH, total T4, free T4, total T3, free T3, T3U, reverse T3, TPO antibodies, and Tg antibodies) will help you to better understand what's going on and why your TSH is high. Hope this is helpful to you! Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Thanks for this great video. I usually work out(weight lifting) 5-6 days a week from last 4 years and my weight is 196 and height is 5.7. I was having hair loss issues and my doctor asked me to do blood test for thyroid. Today I got the report and my TSH is 4.420 uIU/ml and standard Range is from 0.35 to 3.74. So, my TSH is flagged High. My doctor prescribed me to take levothyroxine 50 mcg tablet for rest of my life. Should I start taking this medication or should I wait and do another lab test while visiting doctor after 5 weeks?

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Narayan, usually when we have a mild elevation of TSH and the rest of our thyroid markers are normal, then the standard of care is to track things first. If the TSH is under 10, then it's possible for these situations to resolve without medication. However, since you're having symptoms, your doctor might believe that they are caused by thyroid issues and is trying to be proactive, which is also a good thing. We always want to make sure that the hair loss issues are being caused by low thyroid hormone and not something else. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

    My TSH was around 5.5 and I hadn't noticed any symptoms beyond fertility issues when I was first diagnosed but because I had antibodies, low T4 and was trying to conceive I started a small dose of generic levothyroxine. Within a few months my TSH was a 30, and other labs simliarly out of whack. I always wonder whether it's possible that taking the medication caused the drastic changes I saw in such a short amount of time? Or does the fact that they increased show that I indeed needed medication?

    • @DrBradBodle

      Hi Kelsey, thanks for the comment! It's hard for me to say without knowing all the details, but it is very possible for people to not react well to certain medications (I have some patients who don't tolerate most thyroid meds). Whatever the cause, I would not say that having the TSH increase is a good outcome or that it shows you really needed it. Let me know if you have any questions! I'd be happy to discuss this more.

      Hi Shailyy, you're very welcome! I hope it's been helpful. This is something that you'll need to work with your doctor on because some people can do things naturally, some people need medication, and others will need a bit of both. To help manage the TSH, we have to figure out why it's elevated in the first place. This is where running a full thyroid panel will help you get a better idea of what's going on, so I would start there. Hope this makes sense and let me know if you have any other questions!

    This is what confuses me a little because my TSH has never been higher then 5.58 and my FT4 has always been in the higher normal range. I was put on medication right away because I had symptoms, was tired for years. But when they found out my TSH was to high they also found out that I had a severe shortage of vitamin D. Which I go supplements for. And finally after many years of feeling tired and lack of energy I felt great. But now when I read into subclinical hypothyroidism I start to wonder what will happen if I stop my medication? Where my symptoms not just due my vitamin D shortage? But at the same time I don't want to quit taking that because I'm scared I will get all the symptoms back I had for years.

      @DrBradBodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Khadija, I'm glad you liked the video :) My advice would be to work with your doctor to figure out what is causing your thyroid dysfunction. I think it's generally a good idea to get thyroid antibodies checked (TPO antibodies and Tg antibodies) on your next set of labs to see if autoimmunity is a factor. Additionally, sometimes we can focus too much on the thyroid and not consider the other parts of the body that can play a role. Things like gut function, inflammation, nutrient status (iron, B vitamins, selenium), sleep, and stress levels might need to be addressed as well to help you feel your best. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

      Hi Sara, so glad you found me! It might be worth your time to get a full thyroid panel to see if any of the other markers are abnormal. If it's one of my patients, I like to check TSH, total T4, free T4, total T3, free T3, T3 Uptake, reverse T3, TPO antibodies, and Tg (thyroglobulin) antibodies. If those all look good, then it's possible your symptoms are being caused by something other than thyroid. Hi Raven, the TSH is a little on the high end, but the fT4 values look normal. I think the most important thing with labs is to always correlate them with how you're feeling and if you have any symptoms. If you're doing well, then continue to monitor and see if the labs continue to deviate. However, if you're feeling worse in any way, discuss the results with your doctor and determine if a change is necessary for your care plan. Hope this helps!

    Thank you for this video! My issue with thyroid problems is that an endo is the worst person to treat them! Yet I keep getting referred to an endo! If it could be a gut problem for example, why is it not a gastroenterologist with endo background! Is there such a thing?? Endos lack the wholistic knowledge that we need as “healthy within range” patients.

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Jumana, I totally agree with you! Unfortunately, in my experience, gastroenterologists can get caught in the same trap as endocrinologists. Both are can be unwilling to look beyond their niche and consider the whole picture. I've even had patients who told me that their gastro said diet had nothing to do with their gut problems, so who knows! But yes, we need to be willing to dig deeper if someone is having symptoms even if things are "normal." Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing your thoughts! However two months back i gained a lot of weight with a puffy face and so when i did my labs last week the TSH was high af 214. I am scared and confused.How could the TSH level go so high in 4 months when i was taking 75mcg instead of my regular 100mcg ? Also now what should be my dose ?100 mcg or shall i increase it ? @DrBradBodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rohan, I'm so glad you liked the video! Yes, I would say that you're doing a great job! Getting TSH from 150 to 1.13 is a big change, so congrats :) In terms of danger, it's interesting because you would think that higher TSH would mean a greater degree of severity, but I don't always see that in practice. Some people have a TSH of 10 and are falling apart. Others might have a TSH of 100 and they're hanging in there. There's a number of factors that can influence these values, so it's not always straightforward to say higher = more danger. The biggest thing would be to pay attention to your symptoms and how you feel. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching and for your comment!

    What are your thoughts on high TSh (above 10) but with someone who had subacute thyroiditis… so six weeks ago they had extremely low TSH and high T3 and t4 and now they are in hypo state. How long would you let this patient wait to see if the increase in TSH does cause the thyroid to begin producing the right amounts of T3 and T4 after the viral infection??

      Hi Jenny, I think getting labs monthly at a minimum would be a good idea. More frequently if something changes and the patient starts feeling worse. Being as proactive as possible is always the best way to do things in my opinion. Let me know if this helps answer your question!

    Thanks Dr.Brad. Your explanations helped me to understand about thyroid function tests.
    I was put on levothyroxine 25 mcg at the age of 45. Yesterday my lab results TSH 5.75, T4 7.69 and T3 (total) 65.0. TSH elevated, T4 within normal ranges and T3 at normal range. I took synthroid for the last 15 years.
    I guess the results show me at subclinical hypothyroidism. What if I hope to be off my medication in the near future..

      @DrBradBodle @DrBradBodle Thanks for the best wishes Dr.Brad 👍 I am planning to repeat lab work in a couple of months. Dr. Brad, what if I stop taking tab. Levothyroxine from today as my TSH is 5.75 with normal T4 and T3.
      For the last 10 months, I have continued low carbohydrate diet and intermittent fasting (13 hours). Hopefully, the new diet brings a healthy hormone shift.

    I have been on Levothyroxine for 13 years, last year TSH 7.5, this year 16.9!! T4 and T3 in normal range, but weight issues and extreme tiredness. Should I be taking T3 with T4? Or what is going on, my cholesterol also high now

      Hi Phillip, this would be one of those cases where we would want to get more lab work done to determine what's going on. Ask your doctor if you can get an expanded thyroid panel, but if that looks good, have them assess other areas that could cause these kinds of symptoms. Wishing you the best with everything!

    A year ago for a year before that I was tired , unfocused , weak. I went to the doctor and was put on thyroid medicine cause mine is functioning slow . Few months later was back to normal . They lowered the medicine but I moved to Germany and took my higher dose with me . I just got tested six months from last time my thyroid horomone is 11.0. I am trying to get pregnant

      Hi Ashley, of course you'll want to work with your local doctor because they know you best, but if your TSH is elevated again, then you might need to have your medication adjusted or there's something else going on that is causing your condition to progress. This is where it might be helpful to check thyroid antibodies (TPO antibodies and Tg antibodies) to see if you have signs of autoimmunity. People can still get pregnant with thyroid problems, but it is important to get your labs optimized beforehand. Hope this helps!

    Hello Dr Brad, my test results for TSH is 5.510 and T4 1.15 Should I be worried?

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William, sometimes TSH can be mildly elevated and it's nothing to be concerned about. However, you will want to track this and get follow up testing to see if it returns to normal or gets worse. Additionally, it can be helpful to correlate the changes in TSH with the onset of any new symptoms. Hope this helps!

    My TSH was 6.2 my 3-t t-4 was good! But Dr put me on Thyroid meds anyways! I was taking iodine drops before for about a month. Could this have made my numbers high? And do u think desacated meds are better? Thanks

    • @DrBradBodle
      @DrBradBodle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Delores, the iodine drops could have interfered with the numbers and it's possible for excess iodine to make your thyroid symptoms worse if you have Hashimoto's. As per usual, the choices we need to make to support our thyroid depends on the actual cause of the issue. I know this isn't a great answer, but desiccated medication is not better or worse, it also depends on the situation. If you and your doctor determine that you're having a tough time with thyroid hormone conversion (converting T4 into T3), then something like desiccated medication could help as it includes both T4 and T3. However, some people can be sensitive to T3 medication or if their levels are normal, then adding T3 might push their numbers too high. It all has to be assessed within the context of what is going on with your body. Hope this makes sense! Let me know if there's anything I can clarify for you.
