    I've watched probably 100 videos on the golf swing, this is the best one I've seen describing the inside-out motion. I've never seen anyone describe it this way, it makes so much sense now. Thanks Clay!

    FINALLY an instruction video that makes sense and works. Never was able to properly hit irons. I made 4 or 5 drill swings not turning, letting the wrists turn over,. Then I added the turn and like magic, the balls were flying down the range better than I ever hit balls before. Now I can practice the right swing technique and stop experimenting with all the other “tips” that flood TH-cam. Every golfer should see this video. Thanks Clay Ballard.

    I have watched endless amounts of golf videos and tutorials. Clay ballard is the man. I started playing golf in June of this year and just by watching these videos and recording myself and comparing to your swing mechanics I have went from shooting 120 strokes to 95 in just 4 rounds after watching and using your drills. Very encouraging!

I have viewed many videos to learn, understand and apply the requirements for a good golf swing. I am now working on the drills ( 100 reps) to open my body and develop the muscle memory. Thank you for all you do.

    This drill is like a magic trick. I have spent several days working on this at the range and the results are solid and with more work, will likely be really good. The throwing motion seems to have opened a door to distance and consistent contact that I have been missing for several years. I can't thank you enough.

  • @emncaity

    I know I'm going way back here, and CB's instruction is almost uniformly excellent. What he says about the actual point of release (well past the ball) and the numbers on what inside path does to solidness of strike and distance are some of the best things I've ever seen in an instructional vid.
    However, I do have to address one thing here: The shoulders are _not_ wide open at impact for the vast majority of good players. They may feel like it, possibly because they open up so quickly _after_ impact, but they're not. Mostly they're very slightly open or square, or for some, even a degree or two closed. From there as you go down through the rib cage and hips and legs, you get progressively more open. Take a look where he's swinging a club at 0:14-17 and freeze then frame-advance on the DTL shot as the club approaches the ball. You'll see the lower body open, but the shoulders closed in the last couple of frames before impact, then square to even a fraction closed to flight as contact is made (the frame showing the first blur of the ball is actually a shade after impact).
    Run back through as many photos of top players as you want, especially those who aren't trying to hit big fades, and you'll see the same: Hips and midsection are always well ahead of the shoulders in getting open.
    From there you absolutely do open up totally and freely. Mainly the rib cage has to get out of the way or there's nowhere for your arms and club to go. And for the rib cage to get out of the way, the hips have to get open. It's progressive clearance from the bottom up. But being totally wide open all the way to the top at impact is just not what happens in good swings.
    This is not an academic point. It's crucial. If you're trying to get the upper body wide open at impact, it's going to hurt your game badly. For some people it might fix a problem today, depending on what problem you brought today. But it is just not the right concept for the long run.

    Hi Clay - so I've been struggling with pulling my shot to the left of my target line. I'm hitting it solid but it just goes way left. So looking at this tip, I'm probably coming more over the top than I thought I was and closing the face and it just goes left. Thanks for this video.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keith, you're likely correct. The ball is always going to start mostly in the direction of the club face then curve away from the path. If the ball doesn't curve then your path and face are mostly in the same direction. You can check this on video from down the line. I would recommend trying to work on getting the club to attack more from the inside. Best of luck! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Any advice on this would be hightly appreciated. Many thanks Clay

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, glad the video helped. If you're more vertical then you need to shallow the hands and club more in the downswing. This is one of the disadvantages to swinging more vertical. The big advantage is being able to create more speed. You want to find a happy medium that works the best for you. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    Thank you for the detailed instruction, Clay. I’ve been watching your older videos and been practicing. Your lessons all point to the same points, just in different angle. I’ve been hitting much straighter/further with MUCH less effort (using whole body helps!)
    My biggest misunderstanding was at the start of the downswing, my hip rotated/opened up even before the start of the downswing, causing the ‘over the top’ upper body, but after watching your other videos, I managed to time it so that my hip/shoulder rotate as my club shaft is parallel to the ground. Did I get your point right?

    The thing is, the correct swing and sequence is 1 in 10 for me and I am hoping for 1 in 7 to 1 in 5. It is obvious because I feel it and know it by the results, but it happens so infrequently that I forget the rules that lead to it.
    Maybe I'm doomed to be a 20 handicap (even when i get there, a 4 footer scares me) but I'd like to play single digits for a season. (I'm 70 so times running out).

      Hi Jim, he is exaggerating in the example. In his actual swing, the hips are about 40 degrees open and the chest is about 25 degrees open. We measured it on MySwing. • @Badfinger4
    @Badfinger4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    7:40 The problem with "swinging out to the right" like this is that it's not how the golf swing actually works. If you strike the ball at the bottom of the arc, then the clubhead will move slightly to the left just after impact. If you watch the swings of the best players in the world, you'll notice that their clubhead swings from the inside but then exits to the left--this is key.
    I followed the advice of swinging out to the right and developed a flip that was nearly impossible to time and produced snap hooks and all kinds of bad shots. Once I started exiting left my flip was gone, my release was much better, and I no longer missed left. I get that most amateurs need an exaggerated feel to stop coming over the top, but I believe they need to know the right way to actually do it. If they have the wrong concept of how the golf swing works, they will inevitably run into trouble somewhere down the road.

    • @sirtogii5216
      @sirtogii5216 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only way that can happen is if the release happens too early (flip move) and hands not leading the club. The advice to swing out to the right is sound.
      Edit: Obviously you need to rotate otherwise this won't work. Golf is a side on sport, similar body motion to baseball so swinging "out to the right" means the club head will swing on the correct path. The grip will be swinging to the left which in turn swings the clubhead to the right.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Denis, this is a very common issue with amateurs. You don't want to use too much right hand but you can also be doing a lot of things that make it near impossible not to. I would first check to make sure you are shallowing the club in the downswing. If you're steep then you'll typically use that right hand to flip the club and shallow it out late. The Move section from our website would be what you'd want to work on. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    Clay, you are very good instructor & player. I use your techniques for various shots. There is not a swing type for everybody. The arm length & total height can dictate the suitable type of swing. In this video, I see you really trying to prove a point by example. 1- The comparison to a short handle hammer to a golf club is BS. 2- A baseball bat is not the same either. Ben Hogan's swing was based on the swinging & release of a baseball bat. Warning! You better have a shaft that can hold up to the rotational speed to keep the clubface in the proper position. I believe that there must be a conflict of who is right & who is wrong in the "You Tube" instructional internet. My personnel swing is based on the principals of Jack Nicklaus & Greg Norman. It is very dependable. The modern instructor would try to change my swing & grip. No Thanks, why do I want to make swinging a club more complicated than necessary to achieve the same result. Keep up the good work & try to find the time play some events, You are very talented & could compete on a high level. I'll keep watching for the help, Thanks.

      I really like the way you break things down. I have a junior golfer and I use your videos to help his game. Keep up the great job!!!

      Hey Bob, I played him in ping pong a while back and beat him. I'm not even very good at ping pong so there you go :-) He says he thinks he can beat me in basketball but we have yet to prove it on the court. I'm feeling pretty confident. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    I hate the baseball bat ---- when you hit the golf ball it is more like a hockey stick (like a slap shot) ---- you want your hands to pass before you body (hands win race) when you do baseball bat swing you tend to turn and not let the club fall down. This video sucks --- go look at Bobby Lopez, he explains this well.

      @@TopSpeedGolf sorry, man, for some reason I thought you were California. You definitely get the wide brim hat pass down in Florida. :-) Good God it is hot down there.
