As an Iraqi I thank you Griffin for bringing attention to this brutal battle. One of the toughest in 21st century. Im proud that it was our men who will be remembered for this battle.
I remember hearing about one woman's story living in Mosul just after coalition forces retook it. When ISIS took the city an ISIS commander murdered the woman's husband who had worked for the Iraqi army. Right after the murder the ISIS commander violated the new widow and forced her to marry him. For the next few years she feigned compliance and contentment with her new "husband.' When coalition forces were advancing in Mosul the ISIS commander asked her to help him escape. She gave him a niqab and led him to an area where coalition forces were letting civilians through. She rushed ahead of her 'husband' and as soon as she got to the coalition checkpoint she turned and pointed at the ISIS commander and revealed to the soldiers who he was, finally getting her revenge on him.
As a Mosul citizen I would like to thank you for your honest and accurate presentation of this brutal war … also huge thanks for our Iraqi troops that have shown extreme courage and professionalism in this battle 🇮🇶🇮🇶

There's a lot to say. The predicament was there was a paper division in Mosul of 400 soldiers, they failed quickly by a dozen gun trucks. It is understandable. The problem with the recapture of Mosul was, you had a militarized folk fighting as guerillas, on the other side you paramilitaries acting as military. Thank you, Mr. Griffin and team for your hard work and detailed efforts in face of YT constantly pushing back on the integrity of your work.
I remember watching the siege of Mosul from Liveuamaps, starting from the day the siege was announced, seeing each sector being retaken and contested. It was that feeling of inside relief when Isis was finally snuffed.
Yeah, bk here in the UK you would always see the same Iraqi tank and crew, the same coalition spec. ops 4 man team with radios n antennas dangling from their humvee calling in air strikes on the news!!
In May 23, 2017, ISIS made one last attempt to set up shop in Southeast Asia, in Marawi City, Philippines. In response, former President Rodrigo Duterte placed the Mindanao islands of the Philippines under martial law, and the Philippine military wiped them out in November of the same year.
I’m late to this video of course, but I remember the stories my dad would tell me during the wars on terror. He’s served so far for 23 years. He has various medals, most notable being the bronze star from this battle. He was an important component of the helicopters used during the capture. We even have the flag he flew during the battle covered in sand
This was a great video! I was deployed in Iraq in 2016 to train Iraqi soldiers that where gonna take part in the battle of Mosul, and yet i still learned a lot about the battle itself.
There is a minor error at time stamp 7:18. The man on the left is wearing a green headband that says "kata'ab alqassam" or Qassam Brigades which is the military wing of Hamas. That headband is only worn by them and they only operate in Gaza. Great video nonetheless.
8:26 that person in the middle that you added is my father I believe major general fadhil barwari ❤ as an iraqi this video is EXTREMELY detailed I love it
One of my buddies lost an arm to a woman that had a bomb wrapped like a baby with a recording of a baby crying so no one suspected her getting close to them.
I served as a machine gunner in a US Army MP team in Mosul from July '06 to November '07, doing PTT training with Iraqi Police. We were out with those guys everyday doing patrols and raids. We'd do raids we called "Lion Hunts" where we closed off whole city blocks and just raided apartment complexes in neighborhoods known to be heavy enemy strongholds. These were massive affairs with the 2nd Infantry Division and all local IP forces. We lost a whole lot of our IP's during that time, they were getting killed left and right. I remember seeing all the major landmarks in Mosul, like the leaning Minaret and the Tomb of Yunas (Jonah) which were later destroyed by ISIS after the US pulled out of the conflict. It infuriated me seeing these get destroyed by ISIS during this period of occupation. ISIS also wreaked terrible havoc on the Kurdish population of Northern Iraq, as well as the Yazidis and Northern Christians. God Bless the Kurds, I always found them to be great friends and allies.
It looks like an artstyle oversight. A lot of Armchair’s assets are either traced or drawn based on real photographs so it’s entirely possible a photo of the wrong group turned up in the search results when they were looking for reference images.
As a Bhartiya I thankyou and salute All Iraqi army, Kurdish Fighters and Us air support for ending this evil demon, Iraqi army is definitely a professional one and i love its golden division meanwhile Kurdish fighters had little to no supplies yet they showed exceptional courage and valour in fight against isis.
I was on the Eisenhower for the 2016 deployment. We dropped the most ordnance on a deployment since 2003, it was incredible. We’d have to replenish our bombs and JP5 2-3 times per week. It really makes grinding away in the Persian gulf worthwhile when you see hundreds of sorties leave with a full load of bombs and come back clean every day! Glad we could help liberate this historic city.
HAMAS and ISIS are Enemies. It's like saying Fascists and Communists are friends/the same when they ideologically oppose them. Ex: when the Fascists (ISIS) openly say they want to ethnicly clense the communists/slavic people
@@Mahasnito there's reports available on how hamas was actually arresting internal members who were isis affiliated as they were directly undermining the pursuit of independence in Palestine.
I remember watching fox new's take on this battle and the guy actually said "like the battle of stalingrad". Thank god you did this video, bringing this battle the much needed attention that it deserved.
Stalin used human wave tactic in Stalingrad and shifted the blame on his commanders after finding out that even the Nazis said that was just too brutal.
@@meatrealwishes Typical propaganda. Nazis spend so much time talking about how Inferior Slavic races were and how Aryans were the master race they couldn't turn around and Admit USSR was Beating them and Slavs were Outsmarting their own Generals in many cases and winning the war. So they used every excuse in the Book:blame it on their allies, blame it on the Weather, say it was just overwhelming numbers. Anything that wouldn't compromise the "Aryan race" and "German war Machine" idea and thus demoralise their countrymen. Surprising to see you fell for 80 year old propaganda
I always do my best to put myself in someone else's shoes, to imagine myself in their position and how I got there. It helps me humanize. Helps me understand. Helps me bridge the gap between me and them, and prevents the feeling of 'otherness' that often comes with war and conflict. I cannot do this with groups like ISIS. Evil to the fucking core.
Never forget, this evil was created by an evil empire Lest you think creating the environment for then to thrive and directly funding and arming them isn't just as evil
Surprised you didn’t mention this is the battle where the longest sniper kill in history was made by a Canadian JTF2 near the end of the battle. Great video still keep it up!
@@GeN56YoS The kill happened June 2017 during an “operation in Mosul” which fits the timeline and from the video it looked to be in a pretty urban area. I’m not a 100% though as the details and video weren’t released until literally just a few months ago though lol
@@LittleMakwaThis could be a translation misunderstanding, but operation Mosul refers to the objective of liberating all of the Mosul province, not just the city. The official name of the province is Nineveh, but more commonly called Mosul interchangeably with the city. It's unclear if the snipers were in the city or in some villages around it, regardless it's a remarkable feat and should've been mentioned. I take back that we know which happened for sure, could be the city and could be not.
As a westerner I am glad a video about this came out. I haven't encountered many documentaries about this on the web, even though it's a major part of world history. Back in 2016, I was a technical inspector for the US army aviation unit that helped besiege Mosul. Griffin, dude I just wanna let you know, you’re doing an excellent job. You’re touching base with topics that are both sensitive but also need to be addressed. Ik and I love your WWII content it’s how I found your channel. I was a little disagreeable about your change in topic in content but seeing now what you brought to the Table. It’s Amazing. I’m aware you’re also getting a lot of backlash from TH-cam too, that hasn’t been easy for you to deal with at all but as a History buff. You brought so much from the change of topic. Touching base with ISIS, our Involvement In Afghanistan, the War on Terror. The things we’ve been clouded and blurred from for decades. These are conflicts, and wounds that Veterans still carry. But seeing you address all of it and educate young people such as myself is very refreshing. Some of the stuff despite how controversial it may be. It needs to be addressed and told truthfully. So Thank you for all your hard work and dedication for putting this content up Griff.
I got to work here in 2017, something I'll never forget is the spirit of the people. Despite the horrifying actions around them the people still worked together, kids road their bikes and played. It left a deep impact on me coming from the most privileged country in NA where our struggles are much less, yet we don't know our neighbors. It goes to show there's something to be grateful for every day.
Had a buddy there, couldn’t really tell me much for obvious reasons but thanks for the video. I can see what they were going through now. I was blown up in a house bomb in Diyala province 2008 at a Al-Qaeda camp, we actually found what would later be known as isis flags, New York times even went into the archives in 2014 and found a photo of our regiment commander confiscating them in 2008. it’s wild to connect these moments to the bigger ones. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was actually released from prison weeks before I was hit, back then he was known as a common thug, not enough to keep him detained indefinitely.
Crazy part is when you realize the US government funded ISIS in Syria to overthrow Assad why fighting them in Iraq I remember in mid 2015 seeing Al Nursa which was the Al Qadea branch in Syria have the same black flag and fighting them taking territory then seeing ISIS just came and merged with most of Al Nura becoming a so called caliphate I actually volunteered in Syria to fight Daesh crazy time that was finding US government owned shoot on ISIS
I remember "covering" this battle for a news segment in my high school class. I interlaced battle of Berlin footage into news footage to draw the comparison. I strangely like when this battle is covered now because I followed it from thr beginning.
it's stories like this that gives me a reality check that there have been major military events in what would be called the modern war era that will likely have lasting consequences in the future.
No, they are NOT. What it has written on it is, top part: "No God but Allah. Muhammed is Allah's profit", lower part: "Al-Qassam Brigades". Al Qassam is a part of Hamas and has nothing to do with ISIL/ISIS.@@VillagerPlaystationVita
Respect to all our iraqi brothers , we both suffered under isis occupation and terrorism May Syria and Iraq get back their stability and prosperety Greetings from syria 🇸🇾❤🇮🇶
Not going to happen with the fragmentation of Islam into Shiite and Sunni, Arab Gulf States and Israel need Syria and Iraq to be destabilized and in war. Arab Gulf states created terrorism so that US and West can finance Arab Gulf states and provide protection, Israel needs Syria and Iraq to be in war to then expand its borders, and US needs war to feed the war economy and military industrial complex.
At 07:26 while showing the ISIS fighters, The green strip on the ISIS fighters shown on the video do not belong to the terrorists located in Iraq, That one is AL Kassam strip, it has to do with the counter occupation movement in Gaza Palestine.

History does not really repeat, I mean, most things hold similarities but the motives are almost always unique or from a different perspective. I just think that saying history repeats is a needlessly survivable statement that has been increasing flawed. 😅

The movie "Mosul" goes to show how brutal it was in these battles.

That was not isis, it was a terror group that was backed by isis and a "ally" to isis
I’m late to this video of course, but I remember the stories my dad would tell me during the wars on terror. He’s served so far for 23 years. He has various medals, most notable being the bronze star from this battle. He was an important component of the helicopters used during the capture. We even have the flag he flew during the battle covered in sand

Thanks for sharing.

Weird detail but the green headband at 7:26 is the Hamas armed wing Qassem Brigades. As far as I know they weren’t involved in Mosul.
They're actually peaceful and fight for what rightfully is theirs

@@meatrealwishes Typical propaganda. Nazis spend so much time talking about how Inferior Slavic races were and how Aryans were the master race they couldn't turn around and Admit USSR was Beating them and Slavs were Outsmarting their own Generals in many cases and winning the war.

I cannot do this with groups like ISIS. Evil to the fucking core.
Never forget, this evil was created by an evil empire
Lest you think creating the environment for then to thrive and directly funding and arming them isn't just as evil

Same war, not same battle. Mosul was house to house combat not long range like village to village.
