Always visually confirm that the needle clip is attached to the needle and the float. Home rebuilt, professionally rebuilt, or brand new, it doesn't matter.

    Great info, thank you.
I was driving my car and suddenly it hesitated and stopped. I wasn't able to start it again.
The mechanic showed me the spark plugs full of fuel and carbon and it was carb flooding.
I thought I knew about cars but this showed me that I don't .
    Still haven't repaired it yet.

such a great explanation of how a carb works & troubleshooting it. Now off to my Webber 2brl to find what it is flooding. On a side note, I was looking to add a gas line pressure gauge, do you carry one? The pressure gauges I have seen go to 100psi, I only need maybe 10. 250 6cyl Ford (69 Mustang) Thanks again, Dan

I have two fire extinguishers in my motorhome. I had one in a (EFI) conversation van years ago and saw a car pulled over, hood up, smoke billowing up. I pull over and jump out to see if it's a fire. Nope, his upper radiator hose blew. It was steam. He had roadside and was in town so he was good.

First time I battled with fuel flooding was with my 1947 DeSoto. Some idiot had put a different carburetor on it that had a size 90 main jet. It literally used 2Litres of gas in a 5 minute drive of about 800 meteres!!!
It sent so much gas into the engine that it diluted the engine oil causing the engine to loose compression and not start anymore.
I then replaced the main jet with a size 50 and replaced the engine oil. Until I got a more appropriate carburetor.

      @@MikesCarburetor Hey Mike.
I was hearing about carburetor flooding due to excessive pressure from the fuel pump. I'm using an original new mechanical fuel pump.
On another note, the pump glass remains empty, but the fuel supply seems fine
I had a few times flooding even after the engine was off. I've inspected the valve and it seems fine.
Anyways, I was thinking of making an external bowl and also a spare gravity fed fuel tank and I was thinking of installing a more heavy duty float valve.
I've also seen fuel pressure regulators but they seem expensive.

I hit a bump too hard on my dirt bike and now my carburettor is flooded, i had to push it about 6 miles home is there anyway to sort it while I'm out without having to take things apart? I need to learn about carburetors so I've subscribed.

You might have gotten dirt in the inlet. Try blowing into the inlet to maybe dislodge any dirt.

My top of my 2280 holley was loose causing it to flood the on top of my engine and would flood the engine where it would take 2 days to dry out before restarting.

I have a Carter YFA which uses cylinder- shaped, "thumb-length" fuel filter. As I searched, I found it screen filters to 100 microns. About six inches before the carb& filter, I recently added an inline, cloth-filtration filter which filters to 40 microns. And I thought of adding between these two Mr. Gasket 1 1/2" fuel pressure gauge to know there's sufficient pressure to carb. How do I know if I have enough or too much fuel pressure? My fuel pump was rated at 35 gpm. Also, the YF/YFA we're used in Ford 144, 170, 200, 250 and 300 ci engines. I assume each had different carb settings

@@todd2962 also EFI can be prone to long term problems with water and corrosion. If a injector gets clogged your gonna end up replacing that whole thing. With a carburetor you can remove the bowl and clean the jets and use compressed air to clean the inlet for fuel. Also EFI vehicles are difficult to modify with exhaust kits. That requires a programmer, with a carburetor you can adjust the idle to achieve the required back pressure for an exhaust.

If the brass float has a pin hole just shake it and you can hear and feel gas in the float

  • @tootsie5052
    @tootsie5052 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Why does the gas in the carb on my '53 Chevy 216 CI engine creep up the sides of the bowl. It did that on the old carb and a rebuilt one from Ebay. A thicker gasket stopped the fuel from leaking around the bowl gasket, and there are no problems when driving, but now if the truck sits for several days the carb will be empty, it just evaporates. I've asked a lot of older mechanics, like me, about it and they don't know. If you take the top of the carb off you can watch the gas creep up the bowl. It's like a capillary action. Ethanol in the fuel????

Does those aftermarket fuel regulator really work? because I had mine on the line before 1 and gas was still coming out of it with the pump turned on so I'm confused..... Any suggestions on how I should properly set the fuel regulator because the electrical elderbrock fuel pump I'm using says 4-7 PSI. Using this stock fuel pump for the last few years driving my 74 duster without no problem with a two-barrel Carter 2 carburetor. now that I changed the lines to cooper with a more straight flow, it seems the fuel pump is pushing more gas to the carburetor than it was before......when I had restrictions, meaning a lot of turns in the lines before it got to the carburetor coming from the tank.
