Around 17th century Kanun was being abandoned as it could not keep up with western instruments due to difficulty of playing and limited sound range, around that time an Ottoman musician added those metal buttons which allowed it to have a better sound range and then it came back to life. The type of Kanun we use today can be called Ottoman or Turkisn
