Flowers in the attic is one I haven’t thought about since I was a kid, but I recall the entire thing like I watched it yesterday. It is very dark, and the ending still sticks with me.

I really think you should dive into the French, extreme cinema. You'll find a whole different level of "disturbing". and "f*cked up". Start slowly with Irreversible and Climax, both directed by Gaspar Noe. Then, you can switch to the new French extremity horror, where you can savor A l'interieur and Haute Tension. For the main dish or the ultimate cherry on the cake...Martyrs. The original one, directed by Pascal Laugier, not the terrible American remake. For me, this is the most disturbing and uncomfortable movie I've ever seen (still). It's brutal, shocking, stomach churning, ultra-violent, shot and acted brilliantly. But nothing is gratuitous, all the mayhem on the screen has a deeper, psychological meaning. Fun fact: after making this movie, Pascal Laugier was the first name attached to a Hellraiser reboot, supervised by Clive Barker. Unfortunately, the project was abandoned, but I always ask myself how amazingly f*cked up would it have been.
good list Chase. Videodrome gets better the more I see it. First time I didn't really get it. One that I think would fit into this category would be Henry: Portrait of a serial killer. Rooker was perfect for that role

There's really only been one film I just couldn't stomach, and had to fast-forward several times to get through it, but still I think of as a masterpiece - Salo.
The two movies I don't see myself rewatch in this or the next ten lives are: "City of life and death" by Lu Chuan: this is about the Japanese massacre in Nanjing, you just wanna cry but can't do enough "Men behind the sun" by Mou Tun Fai: even writing about this make me feel uncomfortable, a war drama about real events depicting the Japanese special unit 731 (who were never prosecuted) under the leadership of Dr.Shiro Ishii who can be described as one of the most evil persons who ever walked the earth, Tun Fai researched the true events for this film and kept the special effects as real as was possible, in an interview he said: "It was hard to decide what I should show and what not. I decided to leave the hard stuff out."
The word you were looking for regarding these "grafik" horror movies is: Tasteless. ;) "Society" is so freaking funny! "Re-Animator", one thing always overloocked is how true to reality the morgue scenes are, Thrash Metal band "Rigor Mortis" used a sample from the film for the same title song Great list! I would add to this list: - "Tetsuo, the Iron Man" by Shinya Tsukamoto: this is about a man turning into a metal-monster, very grafik scenes here and there, truly is about us becoming like machines - "Watership Down" by Martin Rosen: regarded as a childrens film but Hel is that movie nto for children, starts with a rant about death, moves on with war, goes through violence in a declining society and blood and gore - "Burning Paradise" by Ringo Lam: it reads like a classic Wuxia film with folk tale hero Fong Sai-yuk but let's just called it "Buddhist Hell" or "how far does your faith take you" - "Housu" by Nobuhiko Obayashi: actually defies description but reads as follows - girl group goes on a visit to see an aunt, aunt is totally messed up, watches like a fearie tale written by Freddy Kruger - "Perfect Blue" by Satoshi Kon: anime pre smartphone era, this is about fame, jeaously and serial murder, up until the end you don't guess who the real murder is besides several other issues in media business - "Get Carter" by Mike Hodges: the original with Micheal Caine, let's say unlike the Stallone version this one punches you in the guts, watches you go down and then stomps on your head Salute from germany! :D
I love Watership Down, and I believe it was originally a man's nighttime story to his kids based on his experience in WW2. I always loved that it's in the director's cut of Donnie Darko.
Movies are a great escape arent they? I fell in love with movies as a kid and I always felt like for that 90 minutes, 2hrs, or whatever that you watched that movie, you closed the door on our world and all of its issues and you went on an adventure to another world and another place and time...that's the magic of movies!
I hope a 4K of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer comes out this year. I can see Vinegar Syndrome or Second Sight doing a cool Collector's Edition. Maybe even throw in a blu ray of Henry 2 in the set. Would that be a Chase Target?
Now there's a WILD movie, but it's good in the sense it's real. That ending scene with the suitcase sums up how psychopaths think. She was was in the way and he got rid of her.
I need to rewatch The Witch. I came away with a different thought in what the movie was about than you did. I thought it was like when your beliefs are so far out there and you believe so strongly in them, you'll do crazy things in the name of those beliefs. Like I didn't think there really was any demons or witches. Even the one witch the movie showed I though could've been in her imagination. But I'm going to give it a rewatch soon.
Some people thought it was hallucinations due to rotted food they grew/ate and ergot (a fungus that grows one wheat and rye) but this was disproven. Though I feel it’s just another positive towards the film that you can interpret it how you want. But I feel Robert Eggers makes it pretty clear there is a real witch in the woods.. plus it’s called The Witch: A New England Folktale. So I definitely believe he was going for a folktale type story about witches.
Great list! You probably haven't heard of this one but I highly recommend watching Isolation (2005). It's an Irish horror film directed by Billy O'Brien that is very dark, bloody, disturbing yet powerfully compelling. I don't want to reveal anything about the film but just the setting and score will fill you with dread. And honestly man, if you'd had seen this, I'm pretty positive this would be number 1 on this list.
Flowers in the Attic was a go-to for my sister and I growing up. The ending scene where they walk down the wedding aisle is great. "Eat the Cookie!" Lol. Your lists always have good movies. 👍

On my first Navy ship back in the 90’s we would get movies that they would play throughout the ship. Castle Freak was one of those movies. The CO of the ship banned it from ever being played again.

I find Society very off putting. I appreciate what it's saying but I saw it all the way through once and I can't watch it again! Nice people are a nightmare when they're pushed too far. I've seen Straw Dogs a couple of times. I remember the controversy over Crash when I was still in school. I've never watched it because I know I'd be upset by it. I like Jeffrey Coombs and Barbara Crampton but Castle Freak is pretty grim. I'd love to see Thriller: A Cruel Picture as I love I Spit on Your Grave and Revenge. I love seeing SV survivors getting their revenge! I love Re-Animator and I've seen it lots of times! I appreciate the dark humour.

Awesome list! I have not seen the original Straw Dogs (hated the remake), Castle Freak, or Flowers in the Attic. My top most disturbing film would probably be the French film Martyrs. There’s no coming back from that one. There’s a USA remake, which sucks. The original is undefeated!
I havent seen Martyrs but when I started thinking about this list, I wanted to move away from ones I had seen people talk about and the movies that have very little to them other than trying to shock the audience (the only reason titane is on the list is because my viewing of it sparked this list) so I wanted to go for movies that "earn" their disturbing nature and are actually more interesting and entertaining to watch..... Straw Dogs is a bit bleak but good...Castle Freak is classic Stuart Gordon but darker...Flowers in teh Attic is just dark and twisted
One id recommend, although its rewatchability somewhat questionable: Angst (from like 83), basically the groundwork for everything gasper noe became famous for stylewise.

A great movie for this is The House of Yes, similar to Flowers in the Attic but young adults and dark comedy...and Tori Spelling and Freddie Prinze Jr, Parker Posey are in it.
Thriller is a superb release of a pretty awful movie. Yes, the packaging and extra content is sublime but the film is overrated, amateurish and really rather boring …
Id disagree....and I am 100% certain Tarantino would disagree because this looks exactly like a film he would make and he certainly borrowed a lot of style he uses from it, and very heavily so! But everything is not for everyone for sure!

The Witch is fantastic if you like paced films. It’s definitely worth watching frequently.

"Possession" by Andrzej Zulawski is also a very weird and twisted film overall, god the cinematography alone will make you nauseate🤢

Bloody Mama is a good one, also has Shelley Winters. Very dark content, great cast, one of Robert De Niro first flicks. Roger Corman movie.
