A little more detail on why portals vs standard axles. Portals are easy way to get instant performance in the form of more ground clearance for a truck made for everyone -- beginner or experienced. Standard axles offer two advantages in the form of lower CG and more scale appearance (yes, portals are still scale). So, it makes the most sense to include portals on most RTRs and to offer standard axles on most kits such as the SCX10 Pro and the Base Camp Builder's Kit. Kit builders are often either looking build a comp crawler or a scale project.
I've seen lots of comp crawlers with portals in the rear and standard axle up front. I'm not sure why but they have been popping up more and more at the local crawler park. I haven't had a chance to ask any of them why they are doing it.
When I worked at a diesel engine shop, we used to get a couple of guys that came in with Mil-spec Humvees for diesel service. What I remember is the odd feeling of having your foot on the brake at a stoplight ,and the body is rocking back and forth like an inch or 2 from the "slop" that's needed in the gears. It kinda felt like a boat tied up at the dock. Hey it's not like you're sitting at stop lights when being fired up on though. Just a strange tidbit I picked up a long the way.
Pretty cool. They have simply gotten too expensive though. I used to buy about 2-3 Axial vehicles per year. But The pricing has gotten ridiculous. I miss the days of $250-$300 SCX-10 RTRs.
The base camp platform for this truck is wrong _ when the new scx10 3 jeep just came out with the straight Ar.45 axle....... why didn't they use these on this platform
I'm really glad to see a new Axial SCX10 release. The step-side square body K10 body looks great. And I'm actually glad to see this is on the Basecamp version of the 10 III chassis because I think it performs better than the standard 10 III. I do believe I see some recycled parts from the Vaterra Ascender K5 Blazer on this. The rims are definitely the same, and I think the grille is too. Not necessarily a problem, but between Traxxas re-releasing existing bodies as High Trails, and this, it seems that the development budgets are pretty tight in the RC world right now.
When Proline makes this body available clear for the new axial scx10iii straight axle build kit I'll buy one I don't like portals I much prefer gear reduction in the transmission with scale straight axles, great review Greg thank's for sharing 😎👍
That's a nice rig for the money. The Black is reflecting every tree above it. I'm with you on the scratches you know are coming. I guess two bodies may be in order. Trailer queen body and Farm Truck body.
$400 +? I really don't see the point. In every review there's always something negative to say about RTR's (not meaning you Greg) the tires/wheels, and the electronics in general. It's beautiful don't get me wrong! But in my case, I think I would go for the builders kit version. Great job Greg as always. 👍
All rtr electronics suck. Redcrap was the only one that included something worth while with the axe edition. Other than that they allllll suck. Rollers and sliders would sell more but they make more selling those shitty electronics, then the dummys come in and buy them as overpriced replacements hardly capable of a mediocre demo at best.
@@redndeyes you're absolutely right. Although I love my REDCAT Gen 8's, I acknowledge that their electronics can use a HUGE improvement. At least they had the cajones to have a system where they gave you the option to mount awesome magnets like I did on both my models. Yeah I admit that the painted windows suck but all I did was buy a sheet of lexan, cut the windows out, and replaced them with clear lexan and Bingo! The "Redcraps" as you say, never looked better! It's just like a real vehicle, they all have defects, regardless of make and model. no one is ever happy with what they have, the same applies to R/C.
I 'get' where scalers frown on portal axles for non-authenticity. But I have both the JLU Jeep SCX10III and Early Bronco SCX10III. In the same rock garden where I daily run one or more of my RCs my Early Bronco NOT having portal axles is CHRONICALLY getting hung up on an axle or pumpkin where the JLU, Capra, and my 2 TRX-4s do so at FAR less regularity. I will sometimes avoid driving my Early Bronco If I'm already agitated before an RC session the difference is that noticeable. Torque-twist is also all but eliminated with Portal axles.
This is everything I wanted, licensed scale body and simple transmission, even the portal axles. There are some minor grumbles, the omitted sliders and inner fenders and the weird 10iii panhard and thin links, but overall fills a gap in the market nicely
@cmsrcproductions yeah it sucks. I know it's bound to happen. Being a small company is too much burden. But if they could make better trucks I want more. That would be great. Plastic transmission gears in their SCX6. Last straw.

I like it & the chassis is a proven winner with lots of upgrades available. But I think I’d rather buy the Proline body & New SCX3 kit to build my own. I think more & more people are getting back into building kits & the manufacturers have definitely notice & brands have been releasing more kits.
nice looking truck one more sweet looking truck still more than what I can spend on ss so won't never be able to get one but I really like the looks of it
I like the body style and everything of it the only thing I don't like I said don't have the taillights I'd be installing a pear especially considering it's been so hard I've been running mine at night most the time

Greg, great video top filming, the new K10 does look sweet very scale, but the tyre clicking is a no no for me, good so see Axial doing clear windows on this, take note Traxxass! that spot you were filming is ace i would love to run a rig on there but it wont happen keep up the good work mate
No portals for me as I like real scale! But do they work...yha! If building a rock crawler... definitely!! Nice vi but drone time for me now...Mavic 3 Pro!!
I like the body and axles but you can keep the rest especially the electrics,since horizon hobbies has taken over other RC companies the prices have gone up ,the builds kits have got less and the electrics are all the same brand,I think there are better crawlers out there for less,yes I know most people will throw out the electrics we all do as most companies use use crap cheap electrics,very few companies do almost ready to run trucks these days which is ashame really,these days I won't buy any horizon products,I would rather go to the smaller companies
I guess I just don't understand the enthusiasm for a slow-moving RC. Unless I was camping I can't imagine going out and standing in the middle of nowhere to run a teeny tiny truck over rocks that I can just simply walk over

I really don't understand the "scale" thing. I don't buy models that move. They're toys and i want the best performance. The only reason real vehicles used straight axles was cost. I'll take laughable oversized tires and portals on my toys. Real scale would be more gears and much less power, nobody complains about that though...
Maybe just me, but it looks kinda bad. Body looks too short to be scale, making it look toy like. And the details on the body just look cheap. I think the lack of fender flares and rock sliders contribute to it looking so fake.

Another reason is portals give gear reduction in the rear. This underdrives the rear, allowing the front to grab better.

Eh, not a fan of chevy, I've got a proline 91 4runner body on my base camp with some really grippy weighted tires, I'll stick with that.
And STILL using post-and-clip body mounts. 😑🤦🏻♂️
