How to Grow a Plum Tree from Seed - Flowering at 74 Months! How to grow Plum Trees from seed series! th-cam.com/play/PLKJSapt21HvWuC8ty0PDsM7Z2EZg_db8h.html This update is the 74 month mark and we FINALLY have some flowers. In the last video, he was 51 months old and he didnt flower at the 63 month mark but NOW he is flowering! I am super excited to see how this plum tree progresses over the next several growing months! I left the plums in the fridge for more than 3 extra months - a form of stratification, if you will. After several months in the cold fridge (when they were near rotting) I removed the seeds. Then I used a small hammer to crack the seed shell and remove the actual seeds. Next, I tested the seeds for viability by soaking them in water for about an hour to ensure the seeds sank (this usually means that they are viable seeds). I then used the wet paper towel/ziploc bag method to create a mini greenhouse for them and placed them in a warm dark place. Finally, after 3 weeks, 2 of them sprouted. I waited another week to ensure the roots were healthy enough and there was some green seed leaves emerging before I transplanted them. I am excited to see how these plum trees grow over the next several months. Nice to Hear from You again Rob My Orange Tree From Seed Had Already Fruited Last Year it Took 9-10 months for the Fruit be Ripe But it's Very Sweet 😋 Ang Just Last Week it started to Flower Again and This Time It has a Lots Of Flowers..
An orange tree from seed fruiting? That sounds really great, how old is it? I think that citrus trees from seed need to become quite large to fruit, right?
So glad to have found your experiments of growing fruit trees from seeds. Many years ago I started a good number of lemon trees from grocery store lemon seeds. I didn’t know much back then and kept them in pots that were way too small. I gave several away and have one left that I pruned and put in a very large pot last year. I am hoping it will fruit for me, nothing this year. My Meyer lemon, purchased and in a very large pot, is going crazy though and that makes me hopeful. I am starting some nectarines from seed and hoping this time I will do better and get fruit in a few years. I am at the very early stage of soaking my inner seeds from nectarines grown locally. Thanks for sharing and I will be going through and checking out what you did.
Great to see you back Rob. Looking forward to the peach update video. My peach tree (grown from a plum seed, like yours that died) is only a year old, so it’s great to see what I can hope for in future!
The true potato seed experiment was a similar thing. The idea that cloning weakens the plants and trees over time. Your peach trees definitely seem more vigorous, it will be interesting to see what most of them do. I also do not like the idea of grafts. I remember the old wild apple trees I used to climb as a child. They had wonderful fruit.
Hello congratulations on your flowers!! I have a plum tree I got from the nursery, and I was just wondering , when and what should I fertilize it with ?
missed seeing your videos! hope we get more updates on all the other trees from seed, just restarted my apples now that im comfortable in my new home! may plant them in the ground this spring if they grow large enough
I hope my trees I planted in 2015 and 2016 flower this year too. Mine were nursery bought and suppose to fruit in 3-5 years. I put in nut trees too, but I don't expect nuts from them for 20 years. I might as well not expect nuts from them in my lifetime the way things go for me.
I have a plum that's a seedling of the Robusto plum. It bloomed a little and made one plum in its third year. It made more last year and has a sizable crop this year which will ripen in about the second week of June. Robusto is red and a hybrid between the Asian plum (which is what your black plum seed parent likely was) and chickasaw plum (Prunus angustifolia). Robusto itself is nearly pollen sterile, and the pollen parent of the seedling is most likely a wild-type chickasaw plum. (I didn't have any cultivars with good pollen at the time.) Many Asian plums are hybrids with weak pollen and are therefore most productive if they bloom with a wild type of the North American parent species. The fruit of the seedling is red, smaller than Robusto but not by much and tart-sweet. The underlying flavor is more like wild-type chickasaw than Robusto. It's good enough to keep, but I doubt that I will give space to another seedling again. I had a second Robusto seedling which germinated at the same time and which I use as rootstock for a hybrid cultivar called Flea Market. It's pretty good rootstock, and it has suckered, so I now have Robusto and Ruby Sweet on the strain as well. Flea Market is a natural dwarf itself, so it worked out great. Robusto gets huge, so I wanted to see if it would have a dwarfing effect on it. The trunk is tiny in comparison to the Robusto scion, so there is no obvious dwarfing effect one year in, and it may have problems supporting such an aggressive growing strain long term. The small trunk is a result of the wild plum genes. The seedling with fruit is more in line with the size of a wild-type tree than Robusto. Anyway, you may end up needing a better pollenizer for your Methley since there is a really good chance that your seedling will have really weak pollen. It will be interesting to see how the fruit turns out if you get any, and it will be interesting to see if you have pollen sterility issues. I'm guessing you know whether it has set fruit by now. You will need to spray for curculios if you haven't already done so or if its not too late. Good luck.
congrat for the flowers...i share ur happiness, it's so satisfying and rewarding getting positive results after so many months/years of efforts and patience. We love Growing trees, they are like babies! I'm from Algeria, i'm trying for a while (over 5 years) to replicate/grow a rare plum tree (i think i kind of Queen Elizabeth plum tree) from my grand pa legacy... unfortunately without result, i tried all options such as grafting and so on... but till today not with seed, as i was afraid not to get the same plum after so many years and efforts. But, gosh after watching your video... we live only once. I'm starting today this experience of growing plum tree from seed... God bless you for sharing your experience and your time, you are almost there only 4 months and you will be able to taste the holy plum fruits. keep us updated
I watched your video series from the first seedlings, very interesting. I purchased a plum tree that was about 4 ft tall from Home Depot. It is now in it second year and bearing fruit (I realize the HD does something to make this happen and I am the benefiter of that and not the cause). I found your video because I took one of my plums and I now starting to germinate the seed. My question is, should my seed grow into a tree and bear fruit in two years like its parent tree did?
No, my plum tree took more than 5 years to bear fruit and although it is possible to bear fruit sooner from seed, it is unlikely. Most fruit trees are grafted from an already fruit bearing tree which is why they produce much sooner.
Hey Rob! Just started a bunch of honey crisp apple seeds about 2 months ago and they’re all about 6 inches tall. I live in New York and I’m wondering when an appropriate time would be (if any) to plant them outdoors in year 1. The alternative is to grow them for a year in my greenhouse but I think that might stunt the tap root. Great videos!
if it was a black plum the seed came from it's probably a european plum tree and probably self fertile. that methly plum tree is going to need another japanese plum or something similar to pollenate it tho. european and japanese plums aren't compatible. great to see an update though! nice looking tree!
