I love that you have adapted to living with the wildlife in your area. And you have proven you can get beautiful fruits and veggies and still share with the wildlife. Love your compassion and your gardening helpful videos. Bless you and yours.
I make the best plum jam by putting four cups of fruit with 1 cup sugar , juice of 1/2 lemon and 1 TBSP of cinnamon. Cook down on med heat, stirring often... til jam coats a cold spoon. about 20 - 40 minutes. Put into small jam jars with loose lids and freeze. Once frozen tighten lids. Will keep in the freezer a year or two. You can taste the fruit and tartness in this low sugar jam.
Good information. I bought one at Lowes this spring and the tag said it needed a mate to produce fruit. I don't have the spare cash to do that this year, but I noticed mine has tiny plums which I thought was odd. Now I know why.
Yep, the wildlife loved our asian pear tree too. We didn't get many pears off that tree but we did see the squirrels climb right up, tuck one under their chin and scurry off.
Planting a young one today in the White Mountains of AZ. Near to a creek where soil will me more moist but not dry out. Keeping fingers crossed was wise location!
i have few specimen of this santa rosa and also many others, and also apricot tree at my backyard, great tree for sure, love them, and they 'help' me a lot on distancing great amount of time from social media.
Thank you for your info on the Santa Rosa plum. I have had mine over 9 years and have yet to get any fruit. Can you please advise how and when to fertilize. I usually do this beginning in early February, here on the Central Coast, with an all purpose, slow release, fish emulsion and compost. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TY
Lovely tree Dan! It's on my 'wish list' (haha). BTW, I ended up getting a pineapple guava--so excited!! Please keep posting, always looking forward to your vids.
When I have a half eaten fruit, I always leave it in the hopes that they'll pick up on that one instead of starting in on the one I'm waiting to ripen. Plums look amazing. I have the same cultivar out back. Come on, 2019!
I only wish most animals were that gracious. Robins are a polite bird but most others will peck as many as they can see rather than just eat one whole.
Sir, Wonderful. Would you kindly let me know the chill hours requirement for Santa rosa plum a great gift by Luther burbank eminent botanist from US. I love this plum. So gorgeous. But climate seems to be a constraint. I am from India and climate is subtropical with mild winters. Mainly I have grown about 25 plants of lichi. About just 10 plants of Amrapali mango which is distinctly dwarf. Summer temperature in typical summers may reach 37-38 degrees Celsius. Nice and useful video. Welcome and regards. Thanks. 👌👍🙏🙏
what zone are you in I'm in Northwest Pennsylvania 5 my Amish Buddy had a Stanley palm tree in his yard I couldn't believe how different it was from the palms in the store they were so sweet. It goes to show you corporate food has no comparison to homegrown. People should buy for more small farmer gardener farm markets etc. it's way higher quality food and even if it ain't organic it's probably way less chemicals. The secrets to beating cancer a really eating really healthy food with a balanced out diet
Great Video, do you know if Luther used Green Gage plum in his crosses to create the Santa Rosa Plum. The leaves and shape look exactly the same as a green gage one of my all time favourite plums and so sweet. Only thing that looks different is the colour. You have some really healthy trees there. Plums look fantastic.
Same here! except i paid $10. Im really nervous about transplanting it. I bought it two days ago and not sure when the right time to transplant it is....I'm in the North Houston area, what did you do with yours?
Thank you for the advice. I had one Santa Rosa fro christmas from my son, I am getting another one plan them close by. The fruit is really tasty, I had those in Illinois. Now I am in AZ.How close to each other should I plant them ?
@@kouserrehman7569 l'm from Indonesian too, today l want to plant sugar plum from seed, 'coz we dont have plums tree here. l dont know can be succes or not. your homeland have 4 season or 2?
I have always had a question about pollination that no one can give me a straight answer on. If you plant one variety of tree and need a pollinator, should you plant a different variety? I've always thought that two of the same tree variety won't pollinate each other due to them being cuttings from the same parent?
Correction, the Santa Rosa plum is not even slightly self fertile. It's actually not receptive to a lot of other cultivars, but it is a good pollinizer them.
Hey Dan, hope yall are well! I live in South Carolina, zone 8a and have a santa rosa plum upon your recommendation. I was curious as to roughly when your tree flowers in the spring?
I know this video is from awhile ago, but I wanted to ask - you mentioned using another variety to assist in increasing crop size. Can you use native wild plum as the cross pollinator? I already have one growing here, but we’ve never had much fruit set. Would love to get another variety and finally have plums!
I'm trying to espallier a SR plum. Why does it get suckers? And loaded with aphids. I hosed off the aphids and cut all suckers. Anything I can do to help it thrive?😢😢😢
The Santa Rosa strain that I've experienced is definitely not self fertile. In fact its very picky about which strains of Asian type plums it's fruitful with. It seems to be a very good pollinizer of other varieties, but from my experience and the experience of many others I know, no on self fertile

We have many plum and pluot cultivars in our yards for about 10 years now and Santa Rosa plum is everyone's most favorite.

Delightful Designs by Denise West ~I'm in the Texas coastal bend area...How's the plum tree
I wish I can come there right now & have a big bite 😁😁😁😁😁
The title says cold hardy, but you are in California. Just FYI, the tree will survive in zone 5 but won't bear much fruit.
Can you give advice on fertilizing and watering the plum tree?
Thank you for the advice.
I had one Santa Rosa fro christmas from my son, I am getting another one plan them close by. The fruit is really tasty, I had those in Illinois. Now I am in AZ.How close to each other should I plant them ?

Hi! What do you do to keep birds away from your plums. Birds get alot of my plums here in Tucson Arizona

I have Dwarf santa rosa here. In hot desert Imperial county,Ca. . How do I prune and fertilize it? It gives fruit in late may and june.
The tree looks beautiful!! What kind of fertilizer do you use?
Human Poop
I’m convinced that Santa Rosa plums are also known as sugar plums based on their appearance and taste. Is this true?
are the fruits sweet? I would like to grow a plum tree but I want sweet plums.
What pests should I look out for????
How big is she now 7 years later?
I'll take a dozen!
Why not much fruit in them , did you think them out?
Is that a dwarf or semi dwarf? Did you buy online or at a homedepot/Walmart/ lowes?

Mine is going on 4 years and it still has not put on fruit, it has grown and is really healthy just has not put on any fruit.
Plum The Best for Diet
Do you know is the burbank plum tree is self pollinate
would you kind enough to tell me where can I purchase Santa Rosa Plum? My yard is not to big, should I get a regular one or dwarf ? Thanks,
My santa rosa fruit this year first time. Unfortunately it got pests. Do you have a remedy?
Plum curculio. Have to spray right after flowering. Then a time or 2 after.
Is it low chill hours ? I live in Florida.
Could you tell us how long it took to get those size trees from seed to fruit readiness?
The Santa Rosa strain that I've experienced is definitely not self fertile. In fact its very picky about which strains of Asian type plums it's fruitful with. It seems to be a very good pollinizer of other varieties, but from my experience and the experience of many others I know, no on self fertile
What’s the powder on the plums?
