How to Grow A Mango Tree From Seed!
I've been asked by several viewers to start a Mango Tree from Seed Series and since I love growing from seed, I figured I may as well give it a go!
I have experimented with several different techniques over the last few months to get an idea of which methods work the best. In this video, I will share with you the steps I took to:
1 - Remove the mango seed from the shell
2 - Clean off the paper wrapping and bathe the seed to remove any particulates and mold spores
3 - Using clear wrap and a plastic bag as a germination station
4 - update you on a seed that was started a few week's ago
I plan on keeping you updated on all of the seedlings progress from now until they either perish or flourish into fruit-producing trees.
I want to credit Melvin Wei for his clear wrap concept which I feel drastically reduces the chances of mold and also allows for visibility into what the seed is going through as it germinates and grows.
    Here's his channel link:
    th-cam.com/users/TheMelvi...
Also - here's the link to his Mango Seed Series:

I hope you found the video both informative and fun to watch!

I put 10 husks in a couple of plastic bags for a few days. Then removed the shell, they popped open fairly easily. Cleaned them off under running water. Then just put them in potting soil. Sunny location . About a week later, the seeds are puffed out, and I have a vertical sprout above the soil line! I'm so happy!

I've use those kind of methods.
    50% chance of it growing.
Now I open the seed put it directly in a small pot with compost no fertilizer needed to get it started... Works about 95% of the time depending on seed health. just cover the seed about half an inch deep and keep moist not wet .

Hi Rob, I started catching up on your channel lately (I watched your whole avocado series). I'm glad that you liked my method for germinating mango seeds! Yes, they do rot a lot, and are surprisingly fragile and brittle for such large seeds compared to the seeds of other plant species. Seeing the seed germinate in clear plastic is a great way to do "quality control" to make sure everything is working before burying it in soil. My problem afterwards was my mango roots would rot in potting mix. That problem is fixed by growing in sand and dirt. Mango leaves are the toughest non-succulent leaves out there, but mango roots are the most fragile roots out there. Mango plants are really bad at making comebacks as well.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the video.
We used to have mangoes growing in the garden in Swaziland and I never knew that there was a seed inside the nut.
There were so many lovely sweet ripe mangoes that we just had to give them away.
I used a large pair of wire cutters to snip around the edge of the nut then a large screwdriver which I twisted to open the shell.
It worked well and much less danger of injury either to your hand or to the nut inside.

Seed Flat, barely covered, and put a clear baggie over the top with a rubberband. They hate disturbed roots. When sprouts take the bag off. Warm, bright light and they take off looking like a mini palm tree on an island. They are really awesome when u get two growing from one seed. As they get grow they get oddly skinny if not staked. This makes me think of my mango tree which is now much much higher than my house. We did almost nothing special for it. My sister ate once a mango then just threw the seed between the plants in our garden. Now we have enjoyed the results of this seed every year and for several years already. Every year the tree has so many mangoes hanging that we can just pick them up while sitting and having nice chit-chat in our back garden. The mangoes are just too many to eat by the entire families that we 'have to' ask the neighbours also to come help us finish them all :-)...so proud of this mango tree.

Rob, you can also take a butter knife and instead of cutting the pit edge off, I've found that after I take the pit out and clean it off of the fibrous material, I take the butter knife and find the seam, then every so gently push against the seam, then wiggle the knife tip. Over the past month I have started four or five mango seeds and have had no problem with the knife making the initial indent. I then wiggle the knife so that the indentation becomes wider and you can hear the cracking of the shell as you do this. I work along the seam until I have enough of an opening, then pull the shell apart so I can get the seed out! That's it!! Oh, I want to thank you SO MUCH for sharing the "cling-wrap" method. I used to use the paper towel method but it was a matter of hit and miss as far as mold developing and such! I also used tap water but let it sit for at LEAST 24 hours before I use it and mix it with hydrogen peroxide! So far I have around four or five mango seeds (along with four GROWING mango trees, two being over a year old!) and have used the "cling-wrap" method with these recent seeds and so far, ALL are germinating and no threatening mold!! All have roots on and one is going to be sending out a leafy shoot! Thanks again Rob!! ;-) :-)

I winged it I put a mango seed out of the pit and germinated it in a Chinese plastic Tupperware box. I filled the bottoms with a couple cm of water the Center is raised a bit and I filled the water to the seed level and a couple of days later the root already sprouted. I’ve followed videos and it just never worked but this works for me 🙂

I had planted the whole seed a many days ago, then saw this video. I dug up my first seeds to split open the shell. There were five. One was rotten inside. Two had already split their own shells and were coming out, and two had not done anything. So I split those open and replanted them and the seeds that had already come out of their own shell. The shells must serve a purpose. Maybe it's to prevent too much moisture rotting the seed. Since I replanted them all, about a week ago, nothing has come up. Part of me just trusts that the shell has a purpose, or it wouldn't be there. Now I know the shell pops open on it's own, so I won't bother splitting them any more I don't think. Because of the mold issue, I think it's probably wise to not over water.

I was thinking the same thing, however there are so many seeds that won’t start right away unless you file them/cut them first. It’s all just a matter of when you would like that seed to start growing.

Last July I started 6 mango seeds using the paper towel method. I removed the paper film they have on the side but still lost two seed to mold. Got 4 of the planted, and since I was new to gardening I used the biodegradable flower pots. Well I didn’t have them properly secured and left them outside to get a couple of hours of indirect sun and heat, I gust of wind came through and tossed my plants all over the yard. I tried to save them but unfortunately they didn’t make it. I’m excited to start more seeds and can’t wait to see how well yours do! Good luck!

I love your apple tree from seed series and have started my own! (They have sprouted)
You should do a mini series on growing potatoes from TRUE seed. I see people planting them in videos, with no update, but I think it would be cool to see the different varieties that come from them. And your videos are really good at not just planting, but updating. I had no idea that potatoes had seeds. I've got the gardening bug recently and I want to know EVERYTHING lol. I also went a little crazy and planted 7 blueberry bushes, since I thought perennials would work great for me. Anyway, I love your channel! Can't wait to see how your apples turn out!

I like to use the plant pot method, you take the plant pot, then you put compost into the plant pot, then you put the seeds into the compost, then you plonk some water on it, slap it on a warm windowsill, or outside in the summer time, and make sure it doesn't dry out, works most of the time, it takes as long as it takes and I've never had mould on mangoes as far as I'm aware!
I don't get the whole bag method, it seems pretty common, but I dont see the point, if I have a bad seed I'm happy knowing that it's feeding the good seed, and if both fail I have nutritious compost and a pot ready for something else!

At the 2:12 time marker on this video, that's where I take a butter knife and gently put some pressure into that seam along the edge of the pit, then carefully go back and forth. You'll feel the knife tip sink in a little and as you wiggle it, you'll hear it crack. I gently go up so far with the tip of the butterknife, wiggling it some more. Once I have enough opened up with the knife, I then pull it apart and it usually comes apart easily. I hesitate to cut it for fear of cutting into the seed. I mentioned this to you in a previous post but try it next time you start a mango from seed Good luck!! Your method works REALLY well with the cling wrap but I really believe that the key to a successful mango seed germination is the condition of the mango seed itself. I've found that a lighter-colored seed and one that the papery covering comes off easily tend to germinate for me. So far with this method, I lost maybe two seeds to blackness and mold.
