@@ellie.starsky Objectively he was a fantastic emperor. That wasn't the problem. It was the fact that he was such a good emperor (guarded, cunning, cold to the people he loves, even his paranoia) that he allowed it to affect all his personal relationships and made him a bad husband and father.

I don't believe the emperor has true love for anyone. His attachment to Ruyi is from childhood memories, but once he stepped into the emperor's position, he has lost all sense of fairness, and regard for anyone. His paranoia and lustful greed have taken over his sorry life. Yes, he is under a huge amount of pressure, but his disregard for kindness, understanding and compassion for others is greatly if not completely gone from him, IF he ever had them in the first place. He was raised in privilege, nurtured and indulged all of his narcissistic life.
Btw he was not raised privileged..he was abandoned by yongzheng emperor cuz his mother was a maid who yongzheng emperor slept with..later the mother died too..yongzheng emperor did not care for him at all until zhenhuan,empress dowager adopted him , you can watch his childhood from Empresses in the palace drama (btw , I am definitely disappointed with his actions towards his wives and kids)
noble consort jia was the last common enemy of the harem, uniting ling, ruyi, hailan, chun etc. against her..

She rubs the pearl to calm herself and keep her emotions in check in front of the concubines.
You have to understand where Ruyi was coming from. She was framed way too many times by Jia, this is Ruyi’s revenge on Jia. Warned Jia not to push her too far or she will face consequences.
