Big Botswana Baecation, Part 1: Botswana, here we come! Or do we?? (Overlanding Botswana Self Drive)

    In Part 1 of our Big Botswana Baecation travel vlog, we are gung-ho and excited as we head to Botswana from South Africa. We successfully wake up early (miraculous), and we arrive at the border at a great time, all as scheduled and planned, probably for the first time ever, but then ....
    Do we get into Botswana on Day 1 as planned? Of course not! Things were running too smoothly.
    So, before we even get across the border, plans are already changing. Off to a great start!
    Let's try that again, shall we?
    Eventually, we get across the border to properly start on our Botswana travel adventure.
    On to Palapye to buy all our fresh groceries - fruit, vegetables, and meat - no meat and hardly any fresh produce is allowed across the border due to the Foot & Mouth restrictions as well as protocols put into place by the Botswana government to stimulate their own agricultural industry.
    Do we get to Khama Rhino Sanctuary as planned? No! But maybe we still will somewhere along the way. Instead, we have to head directly to Elephant Sands, our second planned accommodation stop in Botswana.
    Follow along on another epic journey!

    Great production, thankyou! We felt your pain at the border, oh my, but you handled the situation with grace (at least in the vid 😄)! Seriously though, excellent lesson learned...we have immediately separated our expired passports from the actuals!! Great stuff Travel Gigolo and SO - looking forward to the next 👌👌

    I felt your pain re. the passport. At least you were able to carry on with your holiday. I only realised I had forgotten my passport when we got to the Dover port in the UK at 1am. I was left behind at the port and then had an eventful train trip back home the next day.

    Fabulous new episode!! Felt your pain, aaargh, I think we've all fallen victim to something like that. We had to turn back and go to the closest municipality (within our home town) to get our trailer licence disk that we'd forgotten in the madness before setting off. And this was the one occasion they didn't check for it, oh well. Still, not as bad as taking the wrong passport!! Loved the video-bombing horse and surprised raptor 😄. Looking forward to the next one!

    Excellent video, just make sure you didn't take a shortcut on the winch wiring, is there a 50amp fuse as close to the battery as possible, on the live and earth wire? is the earth wire from the winch attached to the earth of the battery and not on the car earth? I made that mistake one day before Botswana trip.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the advice. There is a fuse close to the battery (60A), but only on the positive. I haven't checked the wiring all the way. The winch is an original Toyota Denso winch and seems to have been factory fitted, judging from the way the winch wiring harness fits into the rest of the main harness to the battery i.e it doesn't look like an afterthought add-on looks original.
      Maybe it's time to trace the wiring with a bit more effort. The winch only works with the ignition turned on, so there is more to the wiring than I have traced.

    Great video, sorry about the passport issue I had a license issue years ago but i managed to soldier on, driving dirty, but why did you buy meat and veggies in Palapye which is a village come town instead of Francistown which is a city and is nearer your destination??

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Originally, we were going to Khama Rhino Sanctuary first, so we made a booking with the butchery in Palapye to have frozen meat ready for us. But plans changed due to my passport situation 😄

      @Travel Gigolo well thank god you didn't have to go all the way back to JHB I would've been so frustrated, I know here in Botswana when you get a new passport you immediately surrender the old one unless one has visas in it. When can we expect part 2?

    Loved the video!!
    A bit of an inconvenience at the start. Makes the holiday even more sweeter. 😊
    Elephant Sands is one beautiful place. Been there a few times.
    -when you were packing before leaving Joburg. During the time lapse, what was that you inflated? By the front left wheel.
    -Where did you get the panel with pockets you have on the dash? Would love to get one for my 80.
    Looking forward to your next video.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That passport situation almost got me strangled by my significant other 😅
      That was an air jack that I was checking, with a really small emergency compressor to see how quickly it would inflate. We hardly ever take the air jack, but I was expecting muddy conditions. It's also useful in soft sand.
      The dash cover is from Escape Gear hrre in SA, same as the seat covers.

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you were strangled we would not be watching the video 😂
      I have an exhaust jack too. Never tried it using a compressor. I should try too. Have you tried it with the compressor under the weight of the 80?
      Thanks! I will check out escape gear.

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have raised the entire rear axle using my compressor. I'm actually not very keen on using the exhaust has with all the particulates and volatiles in it.

    • @4xTouring
      @4xTouring ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TravelGigolo Thanks for that. I will try too. How did you adopt the air inlet to suite the compressor? Can you do a video on this? Would be very useful for others.
      Currently I carry a high lift jack. But not too keen on carrying this around. Feel it is unnecessary weight.
      I did a video a few weeks back debating on getting rid of my high lift.

      @@TravelGigolo Thanks, will appreciate the info. You mention that some vehicles towing trailers were turned away at Stockpoort. Does this also apply to caravans like the Bush Lapa off road caravans?

    • @TravelGigolo
      @TravelGigolo  ปีที่แล้ว

      The border officials indicated that the border is not for commercial transit. The vehicles turned away had trailers laden with goods rather than holiday type trailers. It seems like a customs issue. They were sent to Groblers Brug.
