The Lawn Tool That Went VIRAL and Why YOU probably SHOULDN'T Buy It - Power Rotary Scissors RG

  • The Stihl rotary scissors RG - a great tool. But is it the best bang for your buck? Probably not. The Idech power rotary scissors have been popular for some time now. People love these things! The Stihl Rotary scissors RG is more expensive than the Idech power rotary scissors. The Stihl rotary scissors RG comes attached to a shaft, while the idech power rotary scissors do not. It seems that most people ditch their string trimmer when they get their rotary scissors, so an extra shaft is not necessary. For me, I will not be replacing my string trimmer with the rotary scissors. A string trimmer is just simply more useful in certain situations so I want to have both at my disposal. The rotary scissors can edge well along a sidewalk or driveway, but I prefer my stick edger as I feel a stick edger is slightly faster for this task. Overall, this tool will be a good addition to the shed but it is definitely not a necessity for every lawn. And with a price tag like these things have, not every household will even feel that it is an item worth having.

    I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

    I've had mine for a few months and love it for edging live beds, curb edging and trimming, even used it to cut a new bed edge.(super acurate and sharp) Blades are actually cheap to replace and can be rotated to maintain sharpness where needed front or back . Also easier to maintain and get service than the Idech. Sort of a Stihl fanboy but i love this tool....well worth the money!!!! i did have the Idech , it was only good for trimming due to short blades , alot louder and need constant greasing. You get what you pay for in Stihl . Some people are steady and precise with a string trimmer ( not me ) and thats why this tool works for me .

Thing is really amazing on the live edges !!!

    To stop damage from a line trimmer you need to use lower RPM. Would be one of the harder things to beat into new employees heads for us. Left to their own devices they would rip into tree trunks at full throttle and over the season remove like 1/4” of bark

    • @Omegadoomship
      @Omegadoomship 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. A lot of people run their trimmers at full throttle when they don’t need that much power. Using the trimmer at half throttle in most conditions will still do the job while saving fuel and trimmer line. I did a test where I trimmed a property at full throttle and then at half throttle while pacing according to my progress. Using full throttle will make things go faster in some cases, but the majority of the time it makes little difference. I also ended up using almost twice the fuel. Ethanol free gas is expensive so saving on fuel is always beneficial if you can discipline the throttle usage. Feathering the throttle helps to reduce damage to trees and fence posts. Otherwise you’ll go through trimmer line very quickly. The only time I go full throttle is for trimming tall grass when you need that extra power.

    2:52 - the difference is longevity and usage of the cutting edges. Stihl's oscillating blades can utilize both edges on both side of the blade gaps... they actually work like scissors. Oscillating head is also somewhat safer, thanks to the reduced risk of kickback, or "free travel", because the blade doesn't rotate in a single direction.

  • @StrongManMattt
    @StrongManMattt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have used both forms of this "machine," albeit from 2 different companies... I used the Red Max with the reciprocating blade (back and forth) and used the Maruyama Landscape Blade (one directional blade spinning) My personal opinion is the reciprocating blades are a better design. I used both kinds for a city job (in less than ideal conditions) to replace line trimmers, the blades that continuously spin would fill with dirt and debris over time and become an issue and seize up, I never had that issue with the reciprocating style. On another occasion well trimming thick grass the continuous spinning style got an article of clothing lodge in it and had to be disassembled to get it working again...

    BUY THE IDEC!!!! They last much longer and blades replace much, much easier. The IDEC blades spin in opposite direction (very smooth), the STIHL scissors oscillate back and forth causing much more vibration and wear and tear in the gear box

(straight shaft has gears in the head which reverses the spin of the head) The downside is being closer to the "blast radius", but I can see to edge better.

    How do you sharpen it and how often do you need to sharpen it? Assuming you only use it on grass and don't go off-roading.

    The trick is to buy the right grass not the right tools. My neighbor only has a mower and has Q1A lawn, the highest grade in Europe.

      grass is grass, and eventually grows beyond its boundaries. If you're wanting a well-manicured lawn, you still need some kind of trim tool to get into tight areas and clean up the edges.
