      Try brushing the gold leaf with a mixture of 8 parts hydrogen peroxide to 1 part distilled vinegar also add table salt like you would making salt water. Just spray or brush it on and see if that changes it. It'll rust steel so keep away from things you don't want rust on.

      If ANY company on the damn planet can come out with clippers that can sheer the steel wire that is my facial hair on top of my annoyingly soft sensitive baby skin that is my face, without causing my face to grind up like hamburger, or drag the hair from my skin in painful tuggs that rip open holes in my face, lemme know! I'll be a customer for life, maybe even worship the damn COM and invest in it so i can keep the thing in business. Until then Beard city. I've tried so many brands i gave up shaving and just rock the lumberjack look. 🤷‍♂ i'm not patchy beard, i'm more of a wolfman beard. It will stay that way until Magic is created. -_- i would love to be clean shaven without feeling like i was skinned for leather.

    As a chemist I looked into it. The reaction of gold in Bleach is facilitated by the addition of hydrochloric acid. To perform the reaction by bleach alone you would need to add a bleach solution that is a whopping 86.9% bleach by weight. Household bleach is generally about 5.25% bleach by weight. This means you need to be adding approximately 26.25 mL of bleach per gram of gold in order to facilitate the full reaction. So that thin coating from your brush probably wasn't enough.

      I can't speak to how much bleach you'd need for this, but as a former retail jewelry salesperson, I can tell you that even the bleach in *pool water is enough to damage gold jewelry*. Over 2 years I knew 5 instances when we had jewelry come in for repair that it cracked or shattered (once in the store SPECTACULARLY!) 2 were part time swim instructors, one was a life guard, and 2 were or had been waitresses (bleach water to clean the tables).
      One of the swim instructors was a female version of Mr T and her necklaces were constantly snapping, some of her chains had 4 and 5 fixes but she wasn't about to take them off for even an hour. The others were all rings, including a former waitress who had just came to work in our store and during an in store event was having her engagement ring re-made (her fiancee had proposed with his grandmother's solitaire, the ring itself was too big and she wanted something that didn't stick up so high.) The second the jeweler put heat to it the band popped, 3 different pieces and one of them flew into the air and landed over 6 feet away. Without skipping a beat, with no context or outside information he announced "chlorine."

      @stephens2241 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@mwater_moon2865 pool water has multiple chemicals added including sulphuric acid and cyanuric acid as well as chlorine. I'm no chemist but I'd guess that some of those other chemicals act to facilitate the reaction in the same way that hydrochloric acid does.

    • @dawn5227
      @dawn5227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes I think you're probably correct. When ever I've seen people use gold leaf before it so much thinner and delicate that it would just stick to the natural oils on skin.

    • @silentferret1049
      @silentferret1049 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No that's leaf and not foil, its brass leaf sold as "gold leaf". Foil is a different thing than leaf and is way thicker and will not tear as easily as that did.

  • @KeyushTheStuntDog
    @KeyushTheStuntDog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +84

    I would assume you would want copper foil instead of gold leaf. As copper tends to be the best metal to change colour. I've used ketchup to add colour to copper sheet, as well as salt and heat, vinegar and other liquids. Foil tends to be a bit thicker than leaf so would also give you more metal to react against. Adding colour to real gold or real silver needs chemicals like liver of sulphur.

    • @Dascia2
      @Dascia2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its the vinegar in ketchup that did it.

    • @silentferret1049
      @silentferret1049 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think what is needed is Brass Leaf which is the cheap gold leaf most come by. The copper in the brass gets dissolved leaving the zinc behind. Leaves a weird dark silvery finish after. Cleaning rusted metal parts in vinegar baths, any brass inserts/bearings will do that. You can get copper leaf but it just tends to be on the rare side to find. Most the times it can be sold as "Rose Gold" instead of saying copper leaf.

    Beautiful result. Thanks for another project where we all learn together.
    You have a lot of chemists and such leaving comments, but from my limited and messy use of gold leaf years ago, I suspect the material you were using was probably an alloy like dutch gold or an imitation gold foil. As soon as I saw you touching it from the booklet with your hands & brushes and it DIDN'T immediately wrap itself to everything and stick to everything and bunch up, I knew it was not the pure whisper thin gold leaf I fought with. Since I don't know the chemistry or the expected result I don't know the importance of that distinction, but please double check with your source to make sure you use what they used. Thanks again. Cheers.

    I would have brushed the foil on with clear resin. Would come out more shiny and possibly pop the foil pieces more in the light. Still turned out amazing as always though. Keep up the videos but also take time for yourself as well as family. ❤️

    Gold is NOTORIOUSLY nonreactive. See Cody's lab and Nile Red for videos about this. Aqua Regia will react with it and dissolve it, but that stuff is EXTREMELY toxic and dangerous. Your gold foil/leaf needs to be more copper based, what you have is probably too high in actual gold to react well, ironically.

  • @BHStudios01
    @BHStudios01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Using gold leafing… you will now find little bits and flakes of it through out the studio forever. It gets EVERYWHERE! XD
    Going to suggest using a fan brush next time. It’s much gentler on the leafing. And normally, you do have to seal the leafing, as it could flake off.

    Ok, so I have been subscribed to your channel for a little while now, and no I have not watched all your videos. YET!! Now, although I enjoyed watching this one, lemme say I am slightly miffed me old mukka. And here is why. It was well into the night and I was lying in bed watching youtube. At the 12:56-ish mark, you asked Alexa to start a 15 minute countdown. I have an Alexa in my bedroom, and she has control over my TV and Firestick. Thanks to you, I had a 15 minute countdown which i had to cancel. And no sooner had i canceled the timer, you said the dreaded "A" word again, which I had to promptly tell my "A" to cancel and shut up. Fast forward to 13:20-ish, and you threw my Alexa into confusion by asking how long is left on timer. So my TV is now playing your Alexa voice saying you have 3 minutes and 50 seconds left on your 15 minute timer, and my Alexa saying what 15 minute timer. Now by this time I am shouting at my Alexa to stop and just be quiet, when you tell your Alexa to stop timer. My Alexa who by now is totally con fuddled, stops the video and switches off you tube. i was a broken man at this point, and just turned off the TV and went to bed chuckling away to myself. So for any future videos you might want to beep out the "A" word so I can watch NO stoppage content. Keep up the good work!!

    Very cool piece. Chlorine and Nitric acid are the things that can do some damage to gold. This is the reason for gold plating contacts it does not oxidize or react with most stuff.

    • @isalisb
      @isalisb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gold was probably better quality than expected, anything strong enough to have reacted would have just dissolved it rather than change colors.

    • @CookingWithCows
      @CookingWithCows 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point was not to react with the gold but with the other metallic impurities that are added to cheap gold leaf, but this probably was too cheap, so it wasn't even real gold either.

    • @isalisb
      @isalisb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CookingWithCows That is possible, but unlikely. Lesser metals would have started to oxidize with the vinegar (which you correctly identified as the goal). More likely is that it is 18k to 24k gold
