  • "La Bohème" at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York tells a tragic tale of love torn apart by illness. But the opera itself might not be the most dramatic story on the stage. Jan Crawford reports on the remarkable journey of a rising opera star, Ryan Speedo Green.

Awesome. This shows us what we can do with all of our students when we show them their gifts. Great to hear this story.

This is a pretty amazing story. To realize the potential in yourself and chase a dream and make it reality is one of life's great joys.

I witnessed this fine singer steal the show away from Gruberova in BOLENA in Vienna several seasons ago ... I could not believe my ears! Bravo!

Bless Each and Every Teachers precious heart!!
A child's mind is a terrible thing to develop on the streets and in jail.
All he needed is someone to believe in him and give a little guidance.

So glad for you my friend, I wish you well. May you grow to become one of the greats of the opera stage.
My only sorrow is that you were so lost, so damaged that your life is not joined to a woman from the 'tribe' of your mother who bore you, but from the 'tribe' of the teacher who believed in you!

There are many more Ryan out there in the black family who are far from resources needed to nurture their talents.

I'm familiar with many black women in opera but not necessarily black men in this genre. The only one that comes to mind is Mr. Simon Estes. However, I'm sure that there are more black men in this artistic field than that. Those black men have not been highlighted enough or have not gotten that big break.

I'm still waiting for the tenor equivalent of Leontyne Price for Otello. Even though both Aida and Otello still regularly get performed in blackface, Aida attracts much more controversy because of the precedent set by Leontyne Price, who _owned_ that role like no one else ever has or will, whereas Otello has not had a similarly endowed dramatic tenor who can both sing the part and _look_ the part, which is a crying shame.

Eric Owens, perhaps a bit past his prime now but still an outstanding singer. When Ryan sang Varlaam in Boris Godunov last season he absolutely dominated the stage. Hopefully he’ll sing Boris some day.

In last night's 60 minutes interview, I thought it was a little patronizing, when Green rolled his eyes, & scoffed about requests he receives from fans, to sing "Old Man River", like Paul Robeson. Apparently he's just too good for that.
