I also prefer apple crisp over apple pie. This recipe looks very similar to my wife's. I like the idea of the walnuts in the streusel topping. Will have to try.

We love apple crisp and simply aren’t into pies. Too heavy. Your crisp looks delicious. I’ll have to add walnuts to my streusel topping the next time. You’re right about mixing tart apples with sweet ones. If I don’t have a tart apple or two to add to the mix, I sneak in a bit of vinegar for contrast. Thank you for this.

I just made this exactly like you made it here.
Except I used a Cuisanart Mini Prep Plus, 24 oz processor.
    Came out perfect.
    Easy peasy.

I remember when I was a kid (in New England) we made apple pies (occasionally the crisps) with Cortland apples, which have that perfect balance of sweet and tart, keep their crispness during baking, and taste better than any other apple combination! However, I don’t see them outside of NE. Yes, gotta have vanilla ice cream! But you’re just showing off in this one! 😋🙏❤️

Billy! Nice job on this! I love how you MIXED the apples! I typically go with granny smith - but the mixture was great! (I also use a fork to break up the topping). The video was great - I enjoyed the technique sharing, and recipe --and OMG homemade Vanilla Ice Cream?? WOW! Thank you!

This is an amazing apple crisp recipe! I will try, minus the homemade ice cream. Thank you Chef Billy for sharing. It really looks delicious! Sometimes a muesli mix is also nice in place of plain oats or mix them together.

Yummy! I’d eat either one, pie or crisp! I tried a recipe that works great in a pinch. The only thing different is using a Betty Crocker oatmeal cookie mix with a stick of butter. Cut in butter and mix. Place this over your apples. 🙂😊

Gaaaah, Im making this and forgot to add the pecans to the topping -_- Either way, I'll add them on top after baking, no problem.
Edit: I used this recipe as a base and made a few changes. Halved the recipe for a small pan. Added a splash of lemon juice to the apples, along with a splash of vanilla, and a splash of bourbon. Swapped the flour in the apples for cornstarch. The end result was sooooooooo delicious!

If you were a sweet, old-fashioned chef, you'd have included "rubbing-in" to make the crumble topping.
Hands in bowl, and rub the flour and butter between your thumbs and index and middle fingers, until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
That's what I was taught, a few lifetimes ago - is it still taught?

  • @MagnifytheLORD

Is it possible to make the topping without the oats?

    • @lesleyvivien2876
      @lesleyvivien2876 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes - the classic apple crumple topping is half fat to flour.
He's using 113 grams of butter, which supports 226 grams of flour.
      I'd use 4oz butter to 8oz flour.

Billy Billy. No hat. A dead giveaway that a guy is bald is that he always has a hat on. I lost that bet. You have hair!!!
This is one of those great desserts that my wife makes. The other day we took it to the next level by making a Creme Anglaise. Oh My Gosh. I will never eat apple crisp again with ice cream

Lol, no, I have Hair. There’s kind of a longer story behind why I always have a hat on in my videos and it goes back to crazy mornings with my daughter before school and not having much time. Although my hair is a little more gray and a little bit thinner, there’s still plenty of it :-)
