    rtt's start at $650 australian so about $450 usd. hardshell popups start at $1000aud about $700usd. yes you can get 4 person rtt's. you can also lift them on and off by yourself if set up a pulley system in the roof of your garage which is also a good way to get it out of the way when not in use. just a few things i noticed.

    I would bring a one person A-Frame scout tent to stake my claim. I would put a "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on the front entry and a couple of old sandals at the entrance. Take a photo with landmark/space number and then leave camp with your roof top camper and there will be a greater chance of you keeping your spot.

    Im with ya on the 'cleanliness' aspect of it....Im not OCD about it, but after growing up near the Ocean and traveling in Europe, we Always kept our shoes outside when coming in....and my Mom kept small containers of water to dip our feet in before coming inside. Leta sand in Florida....

    Liked you video..How about storing your tent on the ceiling of your garage. You could haul it up with a rope and pulleys that would be attached to your rafters. Lock it off with something solid like all thread rod for safety. PRO..With the right set up it would be out of the way and it could be on and off with just one person. CON.That is if you have the clearance to pull into the garage..😎

    Excellent review! The cost has me out. Honestly, if I had the money and seeing that I'm a truck guy, I'd go with a nice topper. Doesn't come off, can sleep in it, store stuff and etc... Much more efficient. Less space obviously, but much more useful.

    Thanks for the review Allie! I just got a Jeep Wrangler last November and plan to do a lot of overlanding and am looking hard at rooftop tents. Appreciate you breaking this down. I am about 90% sure I'll be going with the rooftop option. Sleeping on the ground (especially here in Colorado with rattlesnakes a possible visitor!) creeps me out. Keep the great videos coming and all the best from the Rockies!

    I have been looking at the utility trailer with the topper. It looks like the best solution. I just can't see putting your main vehicle out of commission for a roof top tent. The utility trailer you just drop off your tow vehicle and level out the trailer and set up trailer with lots more storage that is more secure.

      We went with the roof top tent because when we car camp we are usually towing a small fishing boat. We've been using a traditional tent in the past, but love the idea of being up off the ground. The campground we go to its hard to find a really flat area too.

    they've become more of a trend than anything. I know a few people with them. you missed their main point/use(unless I missed it), it would be a "pro", I guess. they are mainly for being able to camp in areas where one couldn't otherwise. like in areas unsuitable for setting up a regular tent, could be rocky, marshy, etc. they don't even make sense to be using them in campgrounds, yet that seems to be the "trendy" use now. using them "to feel safer" is beyond ridiculous, nothing is attacking you in a tent anyway. but yeah, their price is beyond ridiculous, but, as long as people keep buying them, they ain't getting cheaper.

    • @OutdoorsAllie
      @OutdoorsAllie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are great for using in "remote" areas. Away from campgrounds. That's where we find best use!

    Have you had any issue with the style roof rack you have? I know that our Tepui recommended to not use the “clip-on” or “clamp” style roof rack due to the possibility of damaging the roof and it’s not as secure. This is the style we have and we are trying to decide if it will hold up okay on a pickup.

    I have just started exploring roof top tent to possibly mount on a trailer (discovered Space Trailers in Minnesota). Although the tent and trailer is an investment, the trailer can be multi-purposed and not close to the investment one would have in a pop-up, teardrop or travel trailer if they don't need the extra room to accommodate a family.

    The fear of a mountain lion attack is not a phobia, a man was killed this spring trying to defend his family in a tent. The wife said she and her children watched helplessly while it even dragged him away. Terrible things do happen in the wildlife, that is why it is best to be prepared, bring a gun, just don’t advertise it or volunteer info you have it if asked by anyone, get bear spray, use a flare gun, etc., just stay protected and safe.

      You're absolutely correct, many people have had issues with unstable vehicles especially if they have to traverse uneven terrain to get to their campsite. Even on a truck I would get a rack that fits above the bed and never carry it higher than the roof. Which is another huge expense

    • @michaeldunn1754
      @michaeldunn1754 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@asteiner9181 It seems odd to call out gas and wear and tear as a con, but then offer towing a trailer as an alternative. A trailer is going to have worse aerodynamics than a roof top tent, and it's going to be a lot heavier, giving you even worse gas mileage. Also, the tongue weight of your trailer is almost certainly heavier than the weight of a roof top tent, so you're putting just as much strain on your suspension and transmission.

      It's worth noting that while a trailer solves some of the issues, it also significantly increases the issue of cost. Now your $2-3k tent and $500-1000 rack is sitting on another several thousand dollars' worth of trailer.

    I am a tent camper and just got back from a month long trip out west. My wife and I camped at campgrounds to BLM land.
    When we seen the rooftop tents I would set up my chair and a bag of popcorn. From setting up to taking down the roof top tents were a mess. People were climbing up and walking around on top of their vehicles to set up or take down.
    While at Yellowstone I got to see a family from California set up and take down their rooftop tent. It was so comical. He was yelling at everyone to do this or that all while he was walking on the windshield wipers and engine hood. Then he slipped and landed on the hood all while yelling at his kids.
    I looked over and my neighbor was getting a good laugh too.
    Do yourself a favor and just say NO to rooftop tents.

      @PeterNordBushcraft 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kaylalinke Because I would rather sleep in a ground tent or hammock or camper trailer. This is like a motor rv, I wouldn't get one of those unless I towed a car because I don't want to be "stuck" at a campsite. Those are the reasons not really cost.

    Your experiences with RTT are very limited and some of your observations are not well informed. You can get quality hard shell for under 2k, you can get large ones that sleep 4 comfortably, the roof rack you use is not designed for an RTT and is dangerous, the squeaking is not from the RTT, it’s probably from your rack. Most people mount them on the back and leave them full time. You did not represent RTT’s very well in this video IMO.

    Comparing a rooftop tent to a floorless backpacking tent is really silly... There are incredible car camping cabin style tents that give you way more room and comfort than any rooftop tip could ever provide. For 1/4 to 1/3 of the cost of an inexpensive roof top tent, you could have 100 + square feet with enough headroom for a 6'6" person to stand up and walk around, luxurious cots (off the ground), memory foam sleeping pads, a padded floor, a heater, Storage to hang your clothes. Etc. The comparison you make in this video is very disingenuous. Later during the cons you mentioned your family 6-person tent but during the pros you don't compare it to something like that.
    There are also numerous ways to keep the inside of your tent clean.
    Having to break down camp and pack up my tent everyday in order to drive around and explore is an absolute non-starter... We camp in order to have an inexpensive base from which to explore an area. The only purpose I see for a roof-top tent would be traveling across a particular region and only stopping just to sleep. I don't consider this camping, maybe the best term for it would be car-hiking. For this purpose a roof-top tent seems to be the best option.
