    In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm reacting to and listening to music from the French metal band Gojira for the fisrt time. I found their song Amazonia to be a prototype example of the powerful usage of the phrygian modal scale. The riffs are deep and powerful, and so are the events and happenings around this song's creation...as they talk about the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest and the unjust treatment of indigenous peoples in this region.

    Not only they donated and the such, they came here to participate in the protests. Talk the talk, walk the walk and do the work. Gojira are OG. Great people. I, as a brazilian, respect their efforts tremendously in this endeavor. Also they are great musicians!

      @maxhowlett9661 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Doug has gotten pretty used to Double Kick now. I'm pretty sure him using some quality headphones has made it much more bearable. The ones he was using pre-glass prison reaction were pretty terrible. Plus also he's just more used to it overall listening to metal every monday. If he can get through and even enjoy This Dying Soul and Painkiller, the Gojira stuff should be fine, especially given how tasteful Mario Duplantier is with his use of double kick.

  • @viniciusduraes7343

    Joe Duplantier said that the brazilian band, Sepultura, was a huge influence for Gojira and for this track in special. The Roots album's influence can really be seen in Amazonia.
    Sepultura, specially in the 90s, wasn't a prog band (maybe their newest albums could be called as this), but Blooody Roots is really worth to check out.

Thank you so much for featuring them, Doug, I'm a long time fan of yours, and as aways, GREAT work analyzing this! I will recomend you to listen and react to some Sepultura, a metal band formed in my hometown in Brasil, Belo Horizonte, that revolutionized metal in Brasil and got worldwide famous. I think you'd have a great time trying to piece together the rhythm for The Art of Dying. Gojira aren't my favourite, but when they work they are an incredibly powerful band. Absolutely gargantuan sound. You won't find a song that sounds as much like it's title as you will with The Heaviest Matter in the Universe.
    For further Gojira suggestions, I'd recommend the aforementioned The Art of Dying, Born in Winter, or Vacuity

    Gojira is in my top 5 favorite bands, they have heavy aggressive songs but the lyrics and message always set them apart. Thank you for reacting to them!
    The Art of Dying for a rhythmic mystery and deals with mortality
    Stranded for a more mainstream feel but with some heavy emotions due to the nature of the events happening while writing it
    Silvera has catchy riffs and deals with ethics of veganism
    The Heaviest Matter of the Universe for something heavy and if you like astral projection
    Honestly I could recommend another dozen plus songs from this band lol hope to see more some day!

Just read the lyrics of The art of dying, Vacuity, The heaviest matter of the universe, From the sky, Silvera, Global warming, Oroborus, Pray, Where dragons dwell, Esoteric surgery, Toxic garbage island... Then hear the songs. Listening to Gojira is an experience, every time. I recommend you dig in, you will not be disappointed.

    Doug, I have an idea for a video series on film music scores and TV show theme songs, particularly older ones. TV show theme songs are usually short (by necessity), and you could squeeze several into each video. These theme songs and film scores, especially the older ones, were composed and arranged by some of America's greatest music minds and often played with full orchestras. People like Alexander Courage, Percy Faith, Jerry Goldsmith, and of course John Williams. Each week could have a different flavor, for example old westerns one week then sci-fi movies the next. What do you think?

    Since you like metal monday. i have a song for you! I haven`t heard anything similar to this one it is:"Remarkably Human" by Nick Johnston it will definately alter your mood in a good way. It does have an addicting dark melody type of mood to it.

    I implore you to do some reaction/analysis to the metal band "Between The Buried And Me." I believe someone of your talent and enthusiasm would find it challenging but also rewarding.
    I'm honestly surprised with so much Dream Theater and Haken on the channel that you haven't done BTBAM yet (or not that I could find anyways). It seems right up your alley (oh, and Mike Portnoy listed the BTBAM album "Colors" as one of his favorite of the year when it came out, and he even played a guest drum solo on their most recent album, so you know they are respected musicians in the community).
    Any of these songs from their very dense catalog would surely be a good time:
    "Never Seen / Future Shock" - off of Colors II
    "Backwards Marathon" - off of Alaska
    "Extremophile Elite - Live" - off of The Parallax II: Live at the Fiddletorium
    "Disease, Injury, Madness" - off of The Great Misdirect

      While I do agree the music Doug will find the music fascinating, I fear he will get completely distracted by the vocal fry. He has come around to some with Opeth, but I think BTBAM's screams are too mono tone even for me that I have a difficult time getting into them. Trust me. I hav tried.

    I believe Andy Wallace mixed this album, which is probably why the soundscape is so dynamic.
    Coincidentally, he mixed most of Sepultura’s albums, which is who this song was heavily influenced by.

    I did a fairly conservative dive (oxymoron, I know)....into "Yes". The comments were right, the bass player really did drive that band. Off topic, apologies, but, it was because of your channel i did it. I also subscribed. I like your channel, if I had any constructive criticism, I agree with a lot of comments that suggest you turn down your comments (slightly, during the music) and increase (slightly) the music volume. Other than that, cool channel man. Also, out of curiosity, I haven't been able to establish if you, yourself, play any instruments (other than cursory chord structures). Do you? BTW, damn, this song is good. (I, personally, listen from Classical to Rap to Grunge to Metal). I can't do much Country, I've tried, have you? (The ending of that song was ethereal and haunting!).

    Melodically and harmonically Gojira keep it quite minimal. Usually they are rhythmically very intricate, fast and precise, and then there is that HUGE soundscape that you noticed. That is typical Gojira. In live shows they have that exact same bombastic sound and it feels exactly like on the record. You should react to a live show of theirs.

    • @yibril17
      @yibril17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Rhythmically very intricate, fast and precise, and then there is that HUGE soundscape"... MESHUGGAH would like a few words with you ;)

    • @bernhardkrickl3567
      @bernhardkrickl3567 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yibril17 Absolutely. Meshuggah is even more complex rhythmically and has even less melody since the singer only growls/screams but never "sings". On the other hand Meshuggah have (more) guitar solos. And they also have a massive sound but I wouldn't call it huge. It's more like a mountain dropped on you whereas Gojira's sound feels like it fills a vast valley. That's my opinion at least. Everyone can have their own ;)

    • @yibril17
      @yibril17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bernhardkrickl3567 Don't worry, my comment was friendly: by how precise your description of Gojira's music was, I guessed you were reasonable enough to be pointed out about that comparison :)
      While agreeing, I would just dispute that I find Meshuggah to be more melodic but in an ominous way, whereas Gojira is more ethereal: I think in part because of that amount of "singed" vocals you rightly pointed out, which tends to "blend" with the instrumentation, in a choir-like, wall-of-sound fashion - that's I guess why you say "Gojira's sound feels like it fills a vast valley".
      Sadly, Gojira is not my cup of tea: they're too "drone-y" for my taste. Although I celebrate the featuring of new music, I wished the likes of Messhuggah and even less known bands like Frenchmen Gorod were featured, and then a bit more known... but that's daydreaming :(

    • @bernhardkrickl3567
      @bernhardkrickl3567 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yibril17 I don't know Gorod but speaking of French metal bands I would like Doug to react to something by Alcest.

    • @yibril17
      @yibril17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bernhardkrickl3567 Then you can consider yourself kind of lucky, since Alcest is somewhat more popular and accesible (less extreme), hence there is a slim chance of being featured someday - something I don't expect to happen to technical death metal bands like Gorod :(
      Regarding them, this is a good piece for checking in order to know if they are your cup of tea:
