One of the most loved bands in all of metal to this day. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about Gojira, not even from metal "elitists" and that is as rare as a one legged unicorn with an eye patch and scottish accent singing John Farnham songs under a christmas tree in july.

As a metal guy, Mario Duplantier is probably my favourite drummer right now. The groove... and also, I love the parts where it sounds like his arms & torso seem to be in some kind of slow, groovy, laid back place and his feet are just going crazy, like it's two completely separate drummers.

    ~"Breathing slowly, mechanical heartbeat
    Losing contact with the living
Almighty TV plugged, hybrid empty brain
Don't see anything real in the game
    The tension is building constantly
No reason just a reflex I have, driven by clockwork
I try to keep an eye open
And I realize I haven't closed my eyes in a long time
Neglected emotions leading to catastrophic voyage on the other side
I have been given so much stress and lack of confidence
I've been given the gift of so small hope deep inside
I haven't close my eyes in a long time, I am trying
I cannot stomach these forms and colors anymore
But I'm here to continue, after all I have been through
I try to keep my eyes open, I am realizing
This life and death more precious than anything
I won't bring no material in the after life
Take no possessions, I would rather travel light
I'm of this kind that kills all day
But I don't know yet how to die
Art of dying is the way to let all go
Within I practice, in the secret of my soul
My shape in the reflector has
Now for ever, a life on it's own"~

Gojira are so unique, there are so many songs to recommend. The reason btw why the fans aren’t metal stereotypes is because this usually is a festival for other genres, and i think it’s one of the first metal bands to play that festival, it’s in France btw. Mario is an absolute monster. They become less and less ‘heavy’ if you compare it to the early stuff. It’s more ambient-like, a bit more accessible. If you want pure good metal, with crazy energy, check out anything off of the link alive concert in 2003. Other recommendations to start with are Toxic garbage island, ocean planet live at Rio, gift of guilt brixton academy and so on. Would love to see a reaction of remembrance at the link alive and ocean planet at Rio. New sub here, keep the reactions of Gojira coming! Cheers

The lyrics barrier thing has always been so stupid to me (no offence intended, i love your vids man😂): I wasnt born a native english speaker. Was i supposed to not listen or try to appreciate all foreign music cause i didnt understand the meanings of the words? Read them once and they will stick with you. Even in clean vocal songs you can often not pick up what is being said. And by the way its surprising how good some pronounce words while screaming... That said, heres my take on the growls; they grow on you like the music does. Theres something so primordial, so intimate and so emotional about them. They give power to real strong emotions in real life as in music. The weight of the words wouldnt be the same if they werent screamed like this... "I wont bring no material in the afterlife, take no possessions, i would rather travel light". Its power, its relatable. I find that most people dont like them for the aggressive nature: what they dont get is that the aggression isnt towards them, its them. This said, Gojira are one of the best out there, youre in for a treat! Hope the insight helps anybody, love yall

The best way the vocals have been explained to me and how I've explained them to other folks is to think of it strictly as an instrument that makes a sound. Sometimes it acts as a harmony, sometimes as a lead, sometimes as none of the above. Listen to a song two or three times until you can follow along, not with the words, with the sounds and you'll appreciate it a lot more. Find the linear notes online or something later on. Love your videos, please keep them coming.

A lot of what metal bands lyrical themes are about the stuff no one talks about, stuff thsts taboo, environmental warnings spiritual enlightenment, alternative realities, real life experiences and a fuck ton more. People get turned off by the " screaming" and cant understand the lyrics but it's not supposed to be easily interpreted. It's something you have to feel. The vocals become an instrument of great intensity, to make you feel the emotion the seriousness of what is being said. Your soul understands subliminally and later you'll be urged to look up the lyrics so you can later recite them. That's why I love metal, its something to embrace for it's dark beauty and interp it how you feel it needs to be!

Gojira is the original japanese word for 'Godzilla'. Gojira were a pure technical death metal band for the first two albums, then went a mix of tech death and progressive (prog) death and then transitioned into progressive metal with some death metal elements.

Your reactions are always genuine and insightful, good job! With the vocal delivery barrier I fully understand, I used to be pretty opposed to a lot of the growling in death metal and such and although I enjoyed the music it made it difficult for me to enjoy. I’ve since become a lot more familiar with metal in general and at this point I really enjoy a lot of growling and screaming (gojiras style of vocal delivery is one of my favorite along with acid bath). If you continue listening to the more extreme metal side of thing you’ll most likely naturally come to enjoy it.

You can understand the vocalist better on the albums, but here is the lyrics :)
    Breathing slowly, mechanical heartbeat
My shape in the reflector has
Now for ever, a life on it's own

Quite simply, he's talking about dying. Leaving the earth with no possessions like he arrived. There are lyrics on Google that explain it. Everything Gojira does is intense. I'm 62 and I love metal, especially Gojira. Mario Duplantier is, in my opinion, one of the best drummers in the world and this band is the tightest unit you'll ever see onstage. Groovy and with meaningful lyrics. My boys have seen them 5 times in Canada. They are great.

I would give Duplantier another shot with "Vacuity," "Death of Me," or "Remembrance." Another groove metal drummer to check out is Chris Adler, formerly of Lamb of God. He doesn't really blast, but he uses the double bass phrasings and snare backbeat to play with feel and polyrhythms, uses effects cymbals a lot (like riding on a splash) to switch up timbre, and incorporates a lot of linear fills. There are some old MD Festival videos of him playing Lamb of God tunes with his brother. Check out "Hourglass" or "Blood of the Scribe."

The best way to ‘get into’ Joe’s vocals is to read the lyrics and feel his emotions.

4:10 I avoid a lot of pop music because I can understand the lyrics, and that's really all they got. Gojira is fantastic. Their song writing is poetic. No one pushing their voice like he is is easy to understand. Get used to the subtitles. Some of what they are saying would loose meaning if it were sung with soaring head voice or rapped talking style. Vocalist is pushing his chords to the edge. Beautiful.

I learnt jazz since I was 8 years old and it's easy to spot the metal drummers that studied it too. The Stamina comes from technique.
Gojira are one of my favourite bands and a lot of their lyrics are very conscientious
Meshuggah whom I know you have also listened to have very introspective lyrics
I think the vocal style allows for forms of words that actual melodic singing wouldn't allow, although having said that Gojira vocals are a semi melodic entity

  • @vincentjacobsmm
    @vincentjacobsmm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Regarding metal vocals; I feel like it's somewhat in line with rap, where it is more about timbre and energy than "singing a song" if you will, with a drastically different sound of course.
It perfectly blends with the guitars as it's all distorted noise, in the technical sense. The whole metal aesthetic is so much about powerful sound, which I just adore.
It's also irreplaceable - you can't "sing" an acoustic cover of it - which means it's really a world of its own with a unique palette of feelings to express
