This was one of those infrequent doubleheader Sundays where the “main” game (Cowboys-Steelers) was at 1 pm ET. Presumably this was because the biggest TV markets all had teams playing on the West Coast which required 4 pm ET starts-NY Giants at LA Rams, and Chicago Bears at SF 49ers. Putting Dallas-Pittsburgh on at 1 pm allowed CBS to air it to all those big markets. (New York got a TV doubleheader because the Jets were at Houston, the 49ers were blacked out in SF, and the Rams were blacked out in LA.) So Philadelphia-Cincinnati and Green Bay-Miami were played at 4 pm ET and shown regionally.
Bad stretch for the 2 Pennsyviania NFL teams who played in Cincinnati! 2 weeks earlier. The Steelers lost 34 to 10 and then the Eagles lost this one 37 to 13!
The Bengals had poor records but were a dangerous team in those years. In 1978, they walloped playoff-bound Houston 28-13 and Atlanta 37-7, upset the Rams in LA 20-19, and routed Cleveland 48-16. Two weeks after this game, the Bengals led the eventual AFC 1 seed Chargers 24-16 before losing 26-24.
I attended this game in the field level seats as a Bengals fan. One of Archie Griffin's better games as a Bengal.
