- One thing led to another, John Albright is my Revoslot enabler HAHA and now I have three Mercedes CLK GTRs in Warsteiner livery. The trifecta!
Does this mean I'm now a collector? In fact what makes someone a collector? I ask the questions for which there are no right and wrong answers, you give your thoughts in the comments - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

"Enthusiast" is a more fitting term as enthusiasts actually drive their cars. Always happy to be of service, sir. 😉
Foremost, I’d say I’m a collector. I have many cars from multiple brands, different era’s and classes of racing. I enjoy “the hunt”, constantly looking for the next addition to my collection. Some cars are more special than others, for different reasons, but they’re all put on the track. Just as much as enjoy collecting, tuning and improving the car’s performance is the greatest joy I get from this hobby.
Not only are you a apprentice collector you appear to be a philosopher of slot cars. Not a bad thing for both it just requires restraint to keep control. Coffee makes both ok in my book. ☕️
A very interesting point… I think that once you’re engaged in the hobby, it’s all about what your budget is, and whether the manufacturers are producing the scale models that interest each one of us. My wish list is always bigger than my budget 🙈. I have some limited edition releases, but I don’t have a single slot queen, as from my point of view the cars are made for fun, which means getting them round the track as fast as possible.
A good question with no right or wrong answer. Here's my thought: knew a slot car guy some years back who bought two of every livery he purchased. One to race, one in the box. Collector!
Brilliant chat Dave. I think all of us here are a rather close to slot cars, so let's think about music for a bit. If you buy a copy of a few David Bowie albums, you like the music. If you buy all of his albums, you're an enthusiastic fan. But not really a collector. However, if you buy multiple copies of his albums because the label or cover has different printing, or it's a commemorative re-release (but the music's the same), or it's signed and you want to pay a premium for a few microns of Sharpie, or it was pressed in a different country, or you want each album on all of CD, vinyl and tape, then I think it's safe to say you're a collector. Especially if you dare not actually listen to (or even open) a specific copy because it might reduce its value. If you get like this your focus is less on the individual albums, but more on what you've managed to bring together. Collecting is ultimately less about the 'things' and more about you and how you collected them (the chase, the unexpected finds, the bargains). Scott and Gareth had a fantastic couple of chats on Talking Utter Slot about Gareth's collecting slot cars that cover this topic really well. So no, Dave, you are not a collector - but you are definitely an enthusiast. Keep it up, because it's great!
I have the same three Merc’s in my collection. They are great looking cars but also are great for racing. I love racing but also collect slotcars that spend there days on a shelf. But I buy to collect but also to race them, but I buy them with a specific goal in mind, so I guess I am a collector. The problem is that I don’t have brand or era I collect, I buy the cars that I like.

if anyone asks me how many slot cars I have I say "two". Everyone knows it's a lie and we all have a laugh, and most of the time then demanding I give the real answer gets overlooked
This is my Favorite Slot car of all. I have the black one and the blue one and will get the yellow and white!

An interesting point to consider, Dave. I think if we buy more than a few slot cars and give any consideration to what we are buying, we're collectors - although, as John Albright noted, "Enthusiast" may be a better term all around. I guess I consider someone who buys and doesn't run the cars as a "pure collector." My own collection runs narrow but deep, as I only buy endurance-type cars (Early/Classic Lemans, Group C/IMSA GTP, and most things from mid-90s to current, including LMPs, Hypercars and also GTs). The exceptions are my 2 Carrera street muscle cars and the 5 minis I bought - they are so damn fun to drive I had to get one for everybody in the family. 😂 All my cars get run, too.
Collector or not , It’s very hard not to have many cause all cars seem to have a personality which makes each fun to drive.😎😎
I would consider myself a Practical collector. The simple reason that I want ppl to be able to come over and have a choice of what car to race. However I buy the cars I want. I love sets of things but I know that's not a realistic goal for me. The minimum I'd like to have is a pair of the same car but different livery and a max of four. I have other hobbies and I can be a compulsive buyer. I live vicariously through the community and ppl like you Dave, who I can enjoy your journeys from behind a screen at zero cost. good chat.

What a great chat Dave. Personally I think we are all collectors to a certain extent because we tend to collect one type of car to race against each other as they are our preferred type, but are we just grown men who like playing with toy cars and just keep wanting more and more to play with?
AHH now... The concept of "playing cars" as a kid, that's a whole other pot of coffee 😎
Great video, Dave. I was thinking the same thing the other day. Are we collectors, enthusiasts, or both 🤔 I think if you buy multiple cars of different liveries and just put then on a shelf....collector. If you're buying them to have a class of cars to run against each other, probably a bit of both /enthusiast/collector.
Collector? I think we are ALL slot car addicts with no hope for a cure

Dave, I'm in your room, I don't collect anything specific to stick on a shelf but I have cars that I would like.
I normally have 2or3 of each but I don't go out looking forward to obtaining a specific car.
I have a wishlist that I would like but I'm struggling to find or they are not in my price range.
I don't really like collectors as they stop people obtaining their own choice but I understand why people do it.
I'm looking for a Peugeot 205 but I'm struggling because of prices.
I will keep looking and will succeed but it will take time.

Hmmm well Dave as you love revoslot I love scalextric I’ve bought them to make up a set and I’ve also bought them to race ??? They all get displayed in a glass cabinet but they also all get driven hard too I may add so I would have to say I’m a collector that makes full use of his collection 🤟🤟

Great topic! I knew I was a collector in 1974 when I was about 10 years old and received my first AFX 2-car slot car set. I looked through the pamphlet of the other cars they made and desperately wanted to drive some of those on my track as well. So "collector" in my case is seeing a car that I like and wanting to drive it on the track. And since I (thankfully) haven't had the need to discard them after use, they simply "collect" on a shelf or in a container, each waiting for me to return to them, which I do.
One is an object. Two is a pair. Three or more is a collection. So you definitely have a collection of slot cars, just look at your table😊. I also would say that you are a collector. But have aquired your collection with the intent of playing with it, not just look at it. For me that's what make slot cars so much more fun than buying diecast cars. You can actually use and tinker with your collection and that's a lot of fun.
We are both. We can't have enough. So we buy what we want and can afford. But, we never have all of what we want lol.
Good food for thought, Dave. I tend to buy my cars in two's so that I have a running mate, sometimes I buy 3 or more. Also sometimes the cars only get raced occasionally, but definitely no shelf queens

A collector as I call myself is a person who does not tune majority if my cars but like my Porsche 911 rsrs from Carrera I have been collecting all the liveries
My intention is to build a wall of slot cars ceiling to floor it is a piece of art being built one box at a time to complete my artistic masterpiece does that fit the collector moniker

You like slot cars, you drive them, you set them up and prepare them.
As you don't have any pure shelf queens I would not assume you're a collector!

Hmmm, let me think. If you have a track, and you have more cars than you can run on the said track at the same time, be it 2 cars for analog, or 6 for digital, wouldn’t that make you a collector? 😮

my opinion is a collector is someone that hoards with the only intenttion of viewing the item as my dad would say touch with your eyes not your damn clumsy hands
You buy 4 or 5 tyres for your real car. You have bought a 'collection' of tyres, but you are not a collector of car tyres. Buying a set of something out of necessity does not make you a collector. These are toys and you don't need them, but if you like the car and it comes as a set, you buy the set. a collector would 'strive' to buy ALL the cars that manufacture makes, not just the odd few in that set. Here is a better question,

If I’m looking a bit glum, I get asked “Why don’t you go and do your cars?”.
So clearly the habit must have reviving properties, but quite what the understanding of “do your cars” is, I haven’t had the heart to ask 😂
@@NoShelfQueens if you scan across this hobby, we're mostly middle aged men with the occasional mental health wobble that's found this stuff tends to keep the wobbles away and most of our other halves "get it" from that point of view and that's all that matters for them, and us really :)
