this is awesome! it reminds me a lot of stepping and strolling like the divine 9 and multicultural greek organizations do in the states. especially when they had the canes and when they were locked up to make a fluid snake motion. even the call and response element is there! very very cool!
Tamzyn Freeks Crime, violence, corrupt police for a few reasons. We left S.A. after being robbed 5 times in one year and the police doing nothing, also we had friends from the UK visit S.A. and just because they were tourists in a rented can they were pulled over by police and bribed out of a lot of money or threatened with being arrested and yes they will make up a crime to arrest you if you don't bribe them.
This is great! I would love to get permission to reference this video in my dance class (for educational purposes only) let me know if that would be okay/who to reach out to
I saw somewhere girls that dance something like this but dressed in skirts that look like ... grass skirts? they wiggle in it. It was a dance from S Africa. Anyone know how that is called? It looks like they put on a hula hoop with a skirt and are twirling it around them. Thanks.
HI, we're truing to get permission to use the audio clips of the dancers in this video. Just the dialogue. We were wondering how we can go about doing that
+James Phelps You lived there 5 years, I was born and grew up there, I watched my Dad get stabbed for a friggin lunch box he was carrying when I was 16, My Father in-Law and his wife were held at gun point as they were robbed in there home, I walked into our home where three men were robbing our house, I managed to run from them and escape by sheer will alone, I have seen my friend have her phone taken at knife point just because she DARED take it out in the street to look at the time. South Africa is unsafe thanks to the government doing NOTHING about crime. You tell me not to say how bad the country is, so Im supposed to lie and say its great, It is not and I am glad I left, at least now I feel safe.
No not everyone is like that, I agree, there are some very nice people there but until the government sorts itself out and does something about the crime it is not a safe place for a holiday or to live. There are much nicer places to go.
Another form of expression through dance from South Africa and the Apartheid era is gumboot dancing. Watching a live performance is pretty intense as you can feel the stomping of the boots through the ground. It has an interesting history for anyone wanting to look it up
