    What happens when a seed tube gets clogged, when a sheer pin breaks, when the anhydrous tank need to be switched, when a seed disk needs cleaned, when a nozzle gets clogged, when an opener bearing goes out, when a vacuum hose comes loose, when a hydraulic line starts leaking, when the line filter gets clogged, when residue drags up. This doesnt come close to covering all the things I do while just "sitting in the tractor" and I have yet to see how an autonomous tractor will work without someone sitting at the edge of the field to do these things. Which kinda takes away the point of it all.

      I would assume you would get an error message and the tractor would automatically shut down and call for help. A lot like robotic milking machines. Log in on your phone and see if it's an issue that can be fixed remotely. If it's not a simple fix you dispatch a person to go fix the problem.

      @@orange3203 If you've ran much modern equipment, you wouldn't be advocating for more sensors. Theres so many that half the time the tractors throw up a code, it's just a sensor that's crapped out or a wire connection to the sensor that's bad. The operator makes the call to override and theres no downtime. As far as the visual diagnosing, such as oil leaks, that would take some pretty clever programming and a million cameras around the implement/machine.

      @@JohnDoe-zs6gj I'm not saying that we're just around the corner from this being a reality. Sensor issues on our new equipment make up more than half our down time. Getting reliable people to show up and work 16 hour days is also getting tough so I don't know what to tell you. I'm in favor of this type of R&D work continuing. Maybe with the advent of functional AI we'll get automated equipment that can start making informed decisions. It's a cool concept at the moment and I don't like to shoot down ideas in their infancy. Horse drawn farmers had the same skepticism when steam equipment started entering the fields.

      One alternate to this technology that I see possibly coming sooner is a team of small drones vs the one big machine. Less liability and easily scalable to all farm sizes(just by number of drones). Certain jobs will always need the horsepower of a big machine though.

    • @travelocity1477

      I agree. One thing I hate about modern farming is all of the technology. What happened to sitting in a cab of and 4450 John Deere or a 1566 International looking down the furrow the row marker made? What happened to sitting in a cab and being able to think to yourself without having 500 things beeping at you? I know some of the new technology is good, like the the row sensors on a planter. Without them we wouldn't know if we had a row unit not dumping any seed. There is a lot of great technology for farming but this is taking it to far. I'm a John Deere guy and when I found out that Case IH was making an autonomous tractor a few years ago I thought they were so stupid. But now, I think I would rather have the Case IH version of an autonomous tractor rather than this hybrid thing. But still, it takes the fun out of farming. If a farmer wants to get one of these so he doesnt have to sit in the tractor he doesnt need to be farming. That is my opinion though.

      It's designed more or less for the larger farms having your auto tractor run the field allowing you as a farmer to get other tasks done. for instance you can have this follow your combine with a cart for harvest saving you money and time. In the long run. There are endless things you can have this do you can either look at is as taking your job or like I look at it it assists you with your job. The way I see it for small farm application where hiring several operators may not be an option this can take up for that taking that 2 man operation and turning into a one man operation.

    Imagine eating a peaceful meal with your family after a har day’s work and Otto (auto) here is prepping the ground for tomorrow’s planting, fertilizing a few hundred extra acres, or harvesting wheat until midnight so you can work on other projects around the farm.
    Name an advance in technology that people didn’t say would be the downfall of an entire industry.
    Farming is some of the hardest work I know and I haven’t lived on a farm since HS. I know the video is for Deere In Europe, but they face the same issues we are: old farmers are retiring, new farmers aren’t filling the gap as well, and corporate farms are the ones with the capital to afford a bad season or two.
    I don’t know the cost of these autonomous tractors, but on a combine the cab is the most customizable part of the machine. Take out the driver safety features and creature comforts and you’ll have a more efficient platform.

  • @wphubert
    @wphubert 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Forget the autonomous aspect for a moment. To electrify a more conventional combine for instance using 500 kW of power or 670 HP is practical. However the battery is not. A 500 kWH battery would appx 20,000 pounds and would only provide one hour of operation. You do the math for how any hours you want to combine for. 10 hours equals 200,000 pounds of battery. Then how to recharge them in a field that is miles from any electrical grid? After just 10 hours we need 5,000 kWH plus massive transformers and dc creation devices. All for one combine. What if we have 10 combines and 2 grain carts to now recharge? Now we need 600,000 kWH of power . To provide that much power over a few hours would exceed the entire capacity of most rural electrical distribution grids. The green washers want to make broad statements, but Diesel engines are a reality for far into the future.

    • @jimfarmer7811
      @jimfarmer7811 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read through the comments on the robot tractor and and you were one of the few people that seem to understand why electric tractors won't work. We would have to upgrade the rural electric grid to provide 3 phase high amp power to virtually every square mile of farm ground. I would guess that it would cost $trillion dollars to do that. On top of that the grid would only be used at full capacity in the spring and the fall.

    I love how electric vehicles/implements are touted as zero emissions. Where do you think all this clean electricity comes from? Mostly coal fired power plants, although they are pretty good at reducing pollution from them. There are still some.

    • @jayjaygee3306
      @jayjaygee3306 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Spot on. It's never "zero" emissions. It's always "zero emissions here today" or maybe "transferred emissions." Digging the lithium out of the ground in a mine to make batteries creates emissions, and I'll bet the battery factories create emissions. What about those factories that reprocess the very toxic contents of the dead batteries? Pulling oil, coal, and iron from the ground creates emissions, as do the factories that process it into plastic and steel to make this "zero emission" vehicle. There is nothing "zero emission" about this. They really should stop using this phrase. It's a lie that has been restated so many times people take it as truth. If you want to tell lies, nobody can stop you. It's your right to say what you want, but I really wish our policy makers would stop using this fallacy to make policy decisions. Wind, solar, hydro, none of it is ever "zero emissions." It's just "deferred" or "localized" or perhaps "reduced" emissions, although I'm not fully convinced of that either.

    Auto steer has been used for years and John Deere also has prototypes that use 1km or more of cable for power, which works perfectly in combination with auto steer.
    As for maintenance electric vehicles have lower maintenance cost. Electric agricultural machines don't need to connect several consumers to a single Motor with gears shaft and belts but can power everything with its own motor. You also don't need transmission because motors can run at a different speed. And shockingly every one of these smaller motor only weights a fraction of an engine capable of running all systems at once. All of this lower maintenance cost even further.

      Of course, when the low quality control board that has a BOM of $500 blows up, Deere will be happy to charge you $15000 dollars in parts, towing, labor and accounted downtime. Because only Deere can repair it, and if they don't it's a giant paperweight.
      Don't even get me started on the battery pack. A NiMH pack would make the tractor heavier with a lower energy density. A Lion pack would have only a certain usable lifetime with the kind of heavy duty this will be doing, probably 5-10 years, where Deere will be happy to sell you a new pack for the price of the entire tractor.

    Know couple farmers in ontario Canada where they have bought older whites, where they have proven to get well over 10,000 hrs on them with little going wrong besides normal maintenance, no def, saving hundreds of thousands over new and run up to 1000 acres. This is the future ironically. Stuff is just getting way out of control for price of anything new....

    I have some questions. How do I charge these combines when they are 3 counties away from the shop in the middle of a cornfield, in the middle of nowhere?" "How do I run them 24 hours a day for 10 or 12 days straight when the harvest is ready, and the weather is coming in?" "How do I get a 50,000+ lb. combine that takes up the width of an entire road back to the shop 20 miles away when the battery goes dead?
    When the corn is ready to harvest, it has to have the proper sugar and moisture content. If it is too wet, it has to be put in giant dryers that burn natural or propane gas, and lots of it. Harvest time is critical because if it degrades in sugar content or quality, it can drop the value of his crop by half a million dollars or more. It is analyzed at time of sale. It is standard procedure to run these machines 10 to 12 days straight, 24 hours a day at peak harvest time. When they need fuel, a tanker truck delivers it, and the machines keep going.

    This will be the future, although it won't come overnight. Many smaller farmers probably won't own tractors, just hire them by the hour. These machines could run day and night, without disturbing neighbours. We might not like it but it will happen, just as diesel tractors replaced steam powered traction on the farm.

    How many hours can it run per charge, how long to charge, what are the options for charging? Do I lose an hour or more every day to drive it to and from a charging station? Do I have to set a diesel generator up to charge it when I'm not close to home? Our tractors today run a minimum of 12 hours per day non stop to cover the acres. How will electric be competitive under those required circumstances?

  • @TheNuclearBolton
    @TheNuclearBolton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    At this point, why not have an electric track system like you have with trolleys to at least charge the batteries within certain parameters? I mean you could you could have a system of workers that move high voltage line from one side of the farm to the other and the machine leeches to it. Perhaps not contact, but every 25,40,50 yards or so in either direction depending on a variety of factors. It’s not going to be cheap, but it’s definitely an investment and you could pay for low skilled people to do that dirty work. Is this better than autonomous diesels? I don’t know, but this would be great in flat terrain that doesn’t need much maneuvering or crazy terrain navigation.

    There are so many small things that the farmer does to keep the machines going. The planter will get clogged and the rippers too. Kind of unnatural, like driving a car in the 1890s, flying across the country in the 1920s, or going WWI in a tank. This is just the next logical step in large scale farming.
      The science is sound and farming is a good real world testbed for fully autonomous vehicles. Deere already has satellite guided tractors/combines to reduce fuel consumption, over/under fertilization, and maximize yield.
