  • So for diagnostic purposes we decided to remove the cats from my 4.7L Maserati V8, and it sounds AMAZING!! But the fix for this car was not what we expected!

These are the best type of videos you make Randy. Lots of fun wondering exactly what's going on and then a magical fix. Keep doing these buddy videos with Mike. He's a fun addition to the team.

On Maserati's and Ferrari's, the check engine light will stay on for a little while after start up. It's kinda doing a system check basically. So if you see it come on right after starting, then go out again, that'd why

As a former (thankfully) owner of a Maserati Granturismo with the 4.7 engine, I can almost guarantee that :
    1. You need a NEW battery. Don't try using a used battery. These cars are extremely sensitive to battery issues.
    2. If you plan to keep the car for any length of time, you WILL experience the well-known coolant crossover pipe leak. All pre-2011 4.7 engines have a crappy plastic coolant crossover pipe that's located behind the intake and above where the transmission connects to the engine and this pipes ALWAYS leaks. 2011 and newer cars have a metal crossover pipe. Replacing the plastic pipe is an absolute PITA, and requires the removal of the intake.
The Quattroporte is actually a very solid platform. If it's maintained properly, it can be a relatively reliable car.

As a former owner of 2 Quattroporte models ('05 4.2 F1 and brand new'09 4.7 ZF) plus '11 GranTurismo I can tell there is no such a thing as "unreliable Maserati" Each one of them has cost me a fortune. At least the Christmas tree on a dash and dead battery every morning even on the brand new vehicle was free 👌

The quattroporte is known for upper control arm play also if people disconnect the uppers and re connect them qnd the thumping goes away it has to so with how there connected they look tight but sometimes arnt all the way. But the suspension issues are either control arms or the shocks are cluncking around.

Hi Randy the Maserati Q is a thrilling encounter....MWM is already feeling up close and personal...no worry on the misfiring in cylinders...no issues, the car has travelled 128k miles hence Randy/MWM can deal with it relatively soon...things are shaping up nicely...soon the dragon awakes...Good vblog

Randy, it's normal for the check engine light to remain on for 20-30 seconds after starting the car, it runs through a series of checks and all Maserati 4.7s do that including my GranTurismo. It does create anxiety every time for sure but just wanted to let you know so you don't go chasing for a possible issue that isn't there.

Hey guys I enjoy watching your Channel. I'm currently watching the Maserati tune-up and wanted to tell you guys that just because spark plugs AR clean doesn't mean that they're still good. I just changed spark plugs on my Xterra and they had about 50,000 miles on them, they looked fine. I was having trouble with power Towing my boat and driving uphill. After installing the new plugs it was like night and day Improvement and my gas mileage even got a little better. Power came back and my catalytic converter even stopped rattling after the new plugs were installed. Okay, good luck

Caution: spark plugs can be sandblasted to clean but use of wire brush is not a good idea. The wire brush metal can be abraded by ceramic insulator and it leaves metal in pores of ceramic. That makes the insulator less of an insulator. 40+ years back I learned that while working on a long unused 4 cyl Honda motorcycle given to me. It ran, but badly and I drained and replaced fuel, removed every carb fuel bowl and cleaned, and removed spark plugs and wire brushed deposits away. The plugs were pulled and I spun it over with them in each plug wire and I watched. The spark ran down insulators like lightning bolts instead of jumping to ground electrode. A trip to auto store for new plugs and it fired off instantly and ran perfectly. I worked at a Chevy dealer shop as summer job and all the experienced guys said you never wire brush the center electrode ceramic.

Yes, I completely straight piped by 4.2 F1 quattroporte. I removed all cats (primary and secondary) and both final mufflers. It sounded amazing but only with the factory X-pipe/resonator intact. The 4.2 F1 cars are dry sump (yours is wet) which does make a slight difference in the sound. If you compared the dry sump vs wet, you'll clearly hear a cleaner trumpet from the dry sump cars - not quite as smooth as the flat crank f136 but it still sounds great.
