One major dynamic I think that decreased the effectiveness of the second half was that after the death of Hartman, there is a void left by the absence of Ermy's character. I think the audience is left wanting that same level of charisma and it's just not there. Who knew that when he was eventually asked to step into the role, that he would literally take over the entire film.
The R. Lee Ermey portion of FMJ is very strong. However the second half of the film lands alongside 'Fear And Desire' and 'Spartacus' as the three Kubrick films I like the least. I agree with Ebert, the combat scenes are surprisingly underwhelming. And the ending isn't as emotionally profound as it's clearly supposed to be.
The show was an amazing program about new movies that were coming out, IF a movie was any good at all AND two guys- making intelligent statements about movies that were usually somewhere between epic and utter crap. Gene Siskel passed on years before Roger Ebert would AND I used to seriously: value the show, value the cohosts AND really enjoy their critiques- even IF I were to disagree with them sometimes. They disagreed over 'FULL METAL JACKET'- but, at least for DECENT REASONS. fuck- "'reality'"- TV! :P LOL!
Great idea for a channel. I subscribed.
Full Metal Jacket is a great half a movie.

The movie Roxanne was strongly influenced by the Jose Ferrer 1950 version of Cyrano de Bergerac.
