Hey Tim back almost 50 years ago when I first started trapping I was taught to take my traps to the edge of the cypress swamp and bury them
under the wet leaves that were black
it put a blued like finish on my traps similar gun blueing and it worked just about as long as today's dyes
talk about tight the old timers didn't spend a dime on anything that wasn't absolutely necessary
no smell no rust and no cost sounds like winner to me LOL
I totally agree with you on getting the shine off before you use your snares. But I found the easiest for me is to use flat Rustolium spray paint. I get Redish Brown, and Forest Green paint, lay my snares on cardboard and use a cross motion almost like striping them. Starting with one color then using the other, for a camo like effect, 3 wide stripes on both sides, hang them to dry, and you're done. It's quick and dries within an hour.
If I build my snares in the evening, and paint them at night, they're ready to use on beaver the next morning, I guess for land animals, it would take a day or so of curing to get the smell out, but I like beaver a lot more.
On steel traps I blend grey with brown canned Rustolium to make a neutral color that works in the water, and I thin the paint as you have instructed. In the woods it doesn't matter the color because you bury the traps, but in the water where you don't bury them black or white shows up to much.
As for the best made snares, Southern Snares does have the very best snares, if you don't have the time to build your own, quick shipping as well.
As for the trapping instructors go, you're the best there is to take a novis like I was, and make a meat trapper out of them quickly and give them success the very first time out.
Back in the early '40's I learned from the 0l' Timer's to make up some Walnut Hull Water and we would soak out traps in that. The longer you'd leave 'em the darker they got to a point. Plus you could eat the walnut's when you would make this stuff.....

Cant wait to move to SC so I can snare beaver legally seems so much better. Then messing with 330s , NY is a pain in the butt with trapping.

Thanks Tim, Did you decide that flat brown rustoleum and acetone was unsatisfactory? I realize you wouldn't want the smell of acetone in your garage. Just curious how that experiment worked.

Tim, have you ever tried craola crayons with wax. Melt the color you want a dip, just make sure the wax is really hot.

Just dip in the liquid and hang up - one or two seconds is plenty.

How often do you use your snares, before you have to retire them for new ones? Are they all just a one shot wonder, then throw them away ?
Snares are a one shot deal.
@@Meattrapper , seems like it could get kinda expensive to me, over time, compared to foot hold or conibear style traps.
@@Meattrapper I've had coons destroy my snares, but I've caught several smaller hogs using the same snare, and they're still in good shape with no kinks perfect circles. They're camlock snares I purchased from southern snares.

@@Joe_Goofball Neck snares first, then foot snares if I have to - piglets raise hell with foot snares. They knock them down like dominoes.

I use snares, 20" loop, and about 6 to 8" off the ground to snare hogs. Sad, when some people are charging for this information 😕
