  • Getting stranded in the wilderness for long periods of time is a real possibility if you hike, hunt, fish, or otherwise spend time in remote backcountry settings. In this Backcountry College episode, Clay Hayes shows how to build and set DIY survival snares for trapping small animals in a survival situation.
To make these snares, you’ll need some 7x7 1/16” cable, some small washers and a few cable crimps. The washers are used to make a snare lock which cinches down and won’t release. This small diameter cable holds a good loop at a smaller diameter which is useful in catching small mammals such as rabbits, raccoons, opossum, beaver, fox, etc.
When learning how to set a snare, be careful to avoid snaring non-target animals like deer and elk. The snare cable is incredibly strong and would probably hold a deer so long as the snare lock didn’t break. When practicing your survival trapping techniques, be sure to check your states trapping regulations.
Although snares are something that you may never need to use, they weigh very little and, if you do need to catch wild animals for food a snare is a very effective way to do it. Consider throwing one or two into your survival kit and bug out bag!
