  • Our most recent camping experience may be the most challenging ever, when typhoon "Egay" landed in the Philippines on 23 July 2023.
It was a gloomy, yet calm Sunday morning when Sisi and I decided to go camping to where we consider as, "our happy place" - the Kaliraya Surf Kamp. We departed Quezon City at 7AM and arrived in the vicinity of Cavinti, Laguna at around 11AM. I must say, the weather was fairly good since we did not experience any rainfall along the way.
So, I decided to camp on Camp Lot 1, the same spot as last time in May. There were also groups of campers on the other side far away from us. So to say, Sisi and I were the lone campers on Camp Lot 1.
Upon arrival, I took a short rest then started to set up the tarp and tent, anticipating that rain will fall anytime, knowing it is already rainy season. Admittedly, it was a bit hard setting up everything all by myself. It took me a while before I was able to set up the tent, as it was our first time to go camping using a tent because I would always use a tarp with a bed underneath. And yes, I forgot to take my lunch.
The tent I used was the Forclaz MT900. It's a hybrid tarp tent that's best used for trekking or hiking. It's not a free-standing tent so you will be needing to have two trekking poles to make it stand. It can accommodate up to two persons, weighs just 1.30kgs, waterproof, and very compact. Its fly sheet is undyed and has a meshed inner bedroom. It's a very stable tent that can resist up to 70kph of wind pressure.
It was a tiring yet fulfilling day. So, after finishing my quick meal and feeding Sisi her dinner, I already prepared our sleeping gears.
Around 11PM, heavy rain started to fall. Unfortunately, our tarp collapsed due to rainwater that accumulated on the tarp, as gusts of wind was not yet that strong. I had to get out and check it when the rain subsided.
It was a long night though. I hardly didn't get to sleep because of the loud sounds of rain gushing against our tent. And it started to get colder and colder.
    The next morning...
