You can play just about any natural note (except for F) in the first chord, but for heaven's sake NEVER play the G because that note totally kills the color of the chord. It's really an Am11 (no G) chord. Also instead of G7sus4 I would play a pure G (not seventh or sus). For the Bm7 I would use B11. Going a little deeper one could construct the song from modal chords based on fourths. The first chord being A-E-B-(F#), the second being E-B-F# etc. Model chords with parallel shifts up (Bb) and down B. Even the F, G, A resolution could be F-C-G followed by G-D-A resolving into A-E-B
Great lesson Jeremy. This is a special song for me. It got me started listening to and loving jazz music. I was 13 years old when I first heard it. Check out the original recording on the album “Return To Forever” with Joe Farrell (sax) and Chick (Rhodes electric piano)…beautiful!
Thanks! I’ve performed and enjoyed listening to this tune for years and this gives me a fresh approach. Your explanations are very thorough and understandable.
Like the video before watching it! !🥰 I like this album. The album cover is the most consistent with the songs I have ever seen. {sometime ago} this song was on my single rotation a while ago!
My grandfather would play this song for me all the time, it’s very special to me. Thanks for the breakdown!
What a cool grandfather you had! I'm so happy to have brought back that memory for you!

Brilliant analysis Jeremy. Thank you! Jade Visions for sure...
I guess I like the various different options you try. As long as any other instruments agree somewhat with what you've chosen, that's good by me.
Thanks a lot 😂😂
