This was and still is one of the best namm performances I ever heard. Since I listened to this back in 2016 i knew Corey and Nick had a special connection, something fluent that you can see on Corey's face. He's so expressive and you can know when he is pleased playing with someone or uncomfortable
What makes this so fantastic is their innate understandings of where their instruments fit into the space of the music. I was literally telling myself that the only thing missing in this piece was piano downbeats with organ upbeats, and then 3:05 happened. What a privilege it would have been to have been there live and witnessed this firsthand. This is one of the all time great on the spot improvisational duets.
I appreciate how you added the 3rd staff for the organ pedals, a lot of transcribers forget to do that on Hammonds. It also doesn't help that you can get the same tone in one of the manuals (for the left hand) if you set up your drawbars right, oh well 😅 that's why we have a video to help us out!! 🤣
@@nicoelgreeko basically, the organ has a set of pedals below that you can use to play some bass notes with your feet. they're saying transcribers often just bunch that lower bass pedal staff and bass player with hand in one staff. They're also saying you can make the pedal make sounds like the part of the organ you play with your hand
a lot of transcribers forget to do that on Hammonds. YES, and makes reading works by superhuman players like Keith Emerson a bit less clear on first glance
I've seen this video lots of times, but, aside for the great musical back and forth between Nick and Cory, what always gets me, is the pure joy on the faces of those watching in the background.
The joy! That's what's infectious to me. People that don't play any instruments will never understand that feeling. That cloud nine moment of complete connection. As a musician, I've played gigs where the money was a distant 2nd to the joy I know will come along with the others I'll be playing with that show. There are some people I won't play with again for any price, and others I'll play with for coffee and a chance to feel like these two looked throughout the video. I'm in love with their joy.
First of all I love how you guys literally took this to Church oh my goodness!! This is the very definition of “be so good that they cannot ignore you.” This is phenomenal!
You can tell Nick has never been to church when at the end, Corey tries to do trades in the cadenza (a typical gospel thing) and points at Nick and he just finishes the tune 😂
I agree 💯. That’s a big problem these days w/ lots of the new players on the scene that didn’t come out of the church but, want to use the Gospel sauce. They learn the licks & basic Gospel progressions but, don’t know what to do in these situations where the slightest things change up. Cory has been in the church since the womb, can play Gospel in any key without hesitation & knows ALL of the hymns & spirituals. He’s a modern day Billy Preston. Nick is no doubt very talented. But, he’s very lucky that Cory didn’t force this to the key of B, A, Gb, E, A, or Db…
@@SimpsonSound some people might be able to read a hymnal, but that don't mean they can play "the old 100's" or "negro spirituals". You don't even have to gatekeep. Either you know, or you don't.

I am familiar with "Southern Baptists (south east Texas) renditions of these songs. So, before you come in here talking out the side of your neck about who, and what; try to understand the original poster, my comment, and what you THOUGHT you understood. When I said, "You don't even have to gatekeep..." It was a confirmation of the original comment. Not an accusation. I hope this made it clear for you.
I don't care who's playing what instrument it's always good to see two musicians making sure that each other can be heard but still fighting for the last note. That really brought a smile to my face.
I've seen this dozens of times, and always get a kick out of watching the bald guy with glasses in the background. You can tell he's heard a lot of musicians, and knows just how good they are.
As someone who never had the privilege of learning instruments growing up, I still find it fascinating to watch people with amazing musical talent. Mind boggling to me how people can play it so cleanly.

This is the incidental music to "Sanford and Grandsons", where Fred lives long enough to meet and mentor his grandchildren, and move out into the country out east in Fred's ancestral homeland near Paducah, Kentucky. Fred's grandson, Cassius, starts a thriving antique store and becomes an ordained minister, and this is the music we see and hear as the camera pans and zooms into a quaint country church, with Cassius playing on the organ, before church services start.
Oh wow. First time seeing/hearing this, and the sense of joy and playfulness, as well as the almighty skill and sense of music is as uplifting as anything I've seen in a long time. Watching the faces of onlookers is heartwarming, too. Can't read music well, but huge props to transcriber.
Believe it or not, this was on Charlie Brown's 21st birthday. Linus took him and Snoopy to a Jazz Club, they snapped their fingers, sipped whiskey, and randomly yelled "Yeah!" at the cool parts. Linus' set slayed too.
Virtuoso playing like this leaves me breathless, with a huge smile on my face. What talent and what tremendous joy musicians of this talent and ability bring to the world. I am so very jealous that I have barely any musical ability. I can strum a few chords but the piano/keyboard has always alluded me. Fantastic jam!! Thank you so very much for posting. Listened to this so many times and as a primary guitarist (now piano player too) trying to transcribe more than a few lines made my head hurt, you are appreciated
kid u not I had a roommate back in college w a skill set just like this guy w an early jazz foundation that could go off any root notes/arpeggio/chord you gave him for hours straight if he rlly wanted to. Completely improv, full progressions, transitions, structure n everything. To this day probably the closest thing to a genius i've ever encountered n as a [talented] artist myself it still upsets me to know his pursuit isn't music n we weren't ever able to collaborate n capitalize on any legitimate projects. "Saddest thing in life is wasted talent" fr... even tho he'll probably end up working for Google or something lol

Theres a 20% of theory in that too, but its just to understand where to place your fingers, to understand which notes are played in which key, and lastly the relationships (dominant, subdominant, tonic, etc.) between the chords. When you're comfortable throwing scales and arpeggios in any given key, and you're comfortable changing chord and key naturally, you can improvise
All instruments are very cool, but when you think of how incredibly complex it was to make a piano or an organ 250 years ago, and we got all this down into this little 3 foot electronic device, a MIDI device used in making all music as we know it today, its really incredible.
