We switched to 100% sorted Holstein and angus a little over a year ago like you are doing. Only getting holstien heifer calves from the best animals and maximizing beef calf sales makes a lot of sense. Sounds like you guys are doing a great job with a 50% conception rate.
It makes sense in a lot of ways, but it sometimes feels wrong breeding good older cows to beef! Haha
@@pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047 haha yeah my dad has trouble with that especially but we have learned to trust the genomic results.
New farmers are doing a great job I love watching your videos
Thanks for the explanation. Stay well be safe and warm.
your vid quality is fine for what you are sharing with us. Its the content I am here for. Regards
Thanks for the videos! It is interesting to see how the dairy industry is improving. It has been a long time since i have used a "surge"pail milker!
Hi Piet, thanks for sharing all that information I’ll share it to my brother. Cheers 🇦🇺
Hi Piet nice heifers you have there glad your going to continue making videos this year always interesting
Thank you!
Your operation looks spotless, must be the "Dutch" coming out in you!!!! I can relate since I was born and raised in Holland Michigan in a Dutch family.
You're doing a great job managing your heard
Thank you!
Interesting stuff! Whats your target calving interval? Or calving index?
Our current calving interval is 380 days, I'm happy being in that area. A few years ago we moved our voluntary waiting period back, we used to be around 370 days calving interval.
What's up with the Brown Swiss? Have you thought of doing a holstein hybrid? I've got family in Ireland that are in farming and the holstein hybrids are the direction they're going.
We have the brown Swiss more for fun than anything else. We've looked at cross breeding, but I personally like the holstein breed and the amount of high genetic bulls that are available in the breed.
Hello Piet.
I can tell your boy spends all some time with you in the barns. The heifers don't even pull back in the headlocks when he runs by.
Would you like to share the average NM$ of the top 25% heifers and also the average of the bottom 25%?
The top 25% of heifers that have been tested is 830 nm$, the bottom 25% 535 nm$.
How many steady milking cows do you prefer to have year round ? How many mature cows do ya have ?
Milking around 1600 cows consistently, in total around 1800 cows in the herd.
Hoi Piet.
Mooie video. Weet je ook wat je preg rate is?
Gemiddeld 36% over het latste jaar.
Why do you keep a few head of Swiss?
Just for fun, to have some some different colors in the herd.
How many cows get culled every year the percentage?
Around 31%
I see a few Swiss along with Red and Whites mixed in. Is that to simply add in some more components to the milk? I milked on farm with all Brown Swiss and I will not lie I would take a Holstein any day 😂
They're more for fun than anything else, adds some different colors to the herd. We breed them back to brown Swiss and red and white bulls. The brown Swiss are friendly but can also be very stubborn haha.
He piet.
Mooie resultaten.
Why Limousin & not a high marbling Angus or Wagyu? Do you see a difference between bulls conception rate when using sexed semen? What do you breed the Brown swiss to?
From what I'm told the limousine cross calves produce higher quality meat and perform better than Angus cross calves. We've looked at wagyu but don't currently have a market for those calves. Conception rate drops a little with sexed semen. The brown Swiss and red and white holsteins are bred to brown Swiss and red and white bulls. More for fun than anything else, keep some different colors in the herd.
why don't you use angus bulls for better meat quality?
I've asked that question to our reps and from what I'm told the limousine holstein cross with the specific bulls we're using produce higher meat quality and perform better compared to an Angus cross.
Congratulions Piet
Fantastic results reproduction
Higher conception rates 👏👏
I understand you only try 2 services sexed semen in cows and Heifers?
After is beef semen service?
Yes, 2 services of sexed semen, then beef. I'm considering a third service of sexed on the highest genetic heifers and cows.
Make sense try third service in high genetics animals
You have a good % heifers in milk, that’s mean good longevity in herd
Which is average lactation cows in milk?
What is your Facebook page name
I don't have a Facebook page tied to the TH-cam channel. We have a vanbedaf dairy page but we're not very active on it.
