    Have you seen a snake in your yard? Tell us about it!

      Several years ago I was living in upstate NY, near the Canadian border. I’d heard there were rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, among others. I was beyond terrified of snakes back then (have been recovering from my snake phobia since watching your channel!) I was living in a newly developed area on a private road. One hot summer night I came home & before reaching my driveway I saw a very long snake stretched out across the entire width of the road. It had a pattern on it & I’d say it was the girth of a rattlesnake. I didn’t get out of my car (I was ignorant & was terrified it would come after me). I couldn’t go around it, I couldn’t approach it, so I shined my headlights on it but it wouldn’t move. I just sat there at 1am waiting for it to move. Eventually it woke up or became aware of my presence & slowly slithered off to the side of my house & into the back yard, and hopefully into the wooded area behind that. I’d never have harmed it. It was before cell phones had cameras on them, so I didn’t get a photo. I’ve spent all this time wondering what it was, but I think it was a gopher snake 🐍. About 7 ft long, rattlesnake like girth (but no rattlesnake tail), pretty tan, white, black pattern. Do you think it was a gopher snake???

    I didn't really have any interest in rattlesnakes, or snakes in general since my hognose died, I'm more of a lizard person (no, stop it). However, the enthusiasm and compassion all of you chaps and chapess display is so heart warming and infectious. You have gained a dedicated viewer, excellent work thank you.

    I can just imagine how many times that phone rings at the wrong time... LOL. Well at least it keeps ringing. That's always a good thing. 😉 Marrisa I love snakes but spiders aren't my thing either. I totally understand... LOL.

    I'm wndrg how far you're going to relocate the snakes? It's my understanding no more than 1/2 a mile?

    • @RattlesnakeSolutions
      @RattlesnakeSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no set distance, since every situation is different. We relocate to the nearest possible suitable habitat. There are books that could be written about the definition of "suitable", too, which changes depending on species, sex, condition, time of year, and more.

    After a few years in AZ, I still can't seem to find any rattlesnakes. I'm in sierra vista so there's probably a bit less of them but I spend a lot of time where I'd expect to see them. I almost thought I finally saw one on some off trail hiking in the superstitions a few weeks ago but it was a gopher snake under a rock. Are there no snake tour types of things because some people would do bad things?

      @Primal Perry Go out into the desert, take off all your clothes and lie there for 2 weeks....I guarantee your luck will change...

    • @RattlesnakeSolutions
      @RattlesnakeSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not currently but we may try this at some point in the future. Most likely as a bioblitz situation. The issue with offering a tour is that we'd basically be inviting lots of people to return to the area. Even if they are perfectly ethical and all that, it's not a great situation. We can maybe control this by offering them to areas that are protected, like county parks.

    If they bite each other will they die ?, like fighting for a female or just fighting ? I think I have been told both ways, (?) They will die or they won't (?) like they are Immune to there own bites (?) I don't know who to believe (?). I have watch a lot of your videos, but I have not come across a video saying either way. I wonder what impact your releasing at pack rat nests is having on the rat population?

  • @gilbertdelgado6703
    @gilbertdelgado6703 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you tell the difference between males and females?

    • @StephenCinAZ
      @StephenCinAZ ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Males generally have longer, thicker tails, while females' tails are more short and stubby in comparison. The only way to tell with 100% certainty is to use a snake sexing probe, but those who work with a lot of rattlesnakes on a regular basis can usually call it pretty confidently just from appearance.

  • @jonny777bike

    No wonder there's a snake in this yard. There is no 0.25 fencing protecting his yard. Snakes can easily get into his place. Without having 0.25 inch fencing you guys will have lots of business.

    Man I don't know about living in that environment!! homeowner running around in flip flops and shorts, just begging for a bite!! and the snake wrangler is not appropriately dressed either to handle venomous snakes. She seems just a little complacent. I live in California where we have no shortage of snakes either, but our snake handlers always have boots on and heavy lower fabric to deter a snake bite.

    You live in the desert and you are a grown man and you can’t handle a snake? There are probably dozens of snakes around there. Why would you move there with young children? What has happened to American men? I wonder if they charge double for 2 snakes?

    • @StephenCinAZ
      @StephenCinAZ ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry, but...what the hell are you talking about? Firstly, not everybody has prior experience dealing with venomous snakes, ya dingus, and especially not if they've only recently moved to a place where they're frequently found. Secondly, the guy was literally working on a cleanup project in order to reduce potential habitat for snakes and other wildlife in order to make the space around his home *safer* for his kids, and you're giving him crap for even moving his family to Arizona at all while simultaneously questioning his...what, his "masculinity" or some other toxic cowboy bullshit? He made an intelligent and reasonable decision to call a professional to come remove and relocate the snakes so that he could safely continue his work. That seems to me like the act of a mature, responsible adult who's willing to understand and respect the local wildlife, and who is smart and secure enough to accept when he's encountered a situation beyond his own experience or ability (or do you think that a "real man" should go and kill the snakes, or free-handle them, or something else as equally stupid?). I sure hope that what's "happened to American men" is that they've become less like *you* over time.

    • @RattlesnakeSolutions
      @RattlesnakeSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Every part of the country has its dangers. Here, it's mostly in our heads; the numbers of bites and deaths, especially in Arizona, don't justify such a strong reaction as to move away. I don't know which kind of American men you're referring to, but the type that are smart and self-assured enough to call a professional sounds like a good improvement :)

    • @rickjason215
      @rickjason215 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rattlesnake Solutions People can live where they want, but if you want to live in that area, and you have very small children, he should learn how to handle a snake. It would take about an hour.
