  • Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United are all new EFL Championship sides after their relegation from the Premier League. They'll all be amongst the favourites to bounce straight back at the first attempt, will any of them manage to do it?

Not optimistic about the Blades - almost a total re-build coming, with doubts about how much cash will be available and who will be in charge of the transition. If we finish mid-table I'll breathe a sigh of relief. Play-offs will be a bonus, even if we repeat our usual play-off finish.

3 go up, 3 go down. If it wasn’t Luton, Burnley or Sheffield, any of the other teams that survived would have had better odds of going straight back up. At least with these three going down, it still leaves the race open for next season.

So Barkley is going to Villa for reportedly 5M. He had a clause in his contract that if we go down, he can go cheap. Doughty looks set to go to either Brentord or Palace. Hopefully, for a decent fee. There has been talk of Mengi and Adeybayo being looked at. We need to keep Adebayo. Lokonga and Kabore go back. We need to improve the defence, and look to replace those midfielders the best we can. We will be up there again hopefully. We know what we have to do. It will be interesting to see if he has plans to play McAtee or Taylor. It would be good to see Taylor give it a go in the Championship after scoring goals for fun in League 2 and then League 1. COYH
Burnley losing Kompany is significant. I'd be amazed if they are not in the top 6 but if the manager is a stinker it could be interesting. Sheffield Utd is an interesting one. They will be docked 2 points to start with and if they can't afford to spend or have to sell players they won't be about to compete.

I think all of the 3 teams have their issues.
Burnley’s change at the top makes them a slight unknown. But they will still be strong.
Luton have had the best bang per buck for recruitment and they probably won’t stretch themselves too far to make another run for the top.
But Sheffield united are probably going to need to do the most work to get into the top 6 let alone the top 2.
Leeds must be favourites for the top, so I think the best chance is 2 out of those getting close.

I mostly agree with your assessment I do feel that Sheffield United and Luton were quite weak teams to go up in the first place and with Sheffield United having owner issues and Burnley an unknown quantity with new manager incoming it looks less likely one will outright win the league. I think Luton with Edwards and a similar squad will get playoffs but not sure about the other two. Will the Wilder factor work again? Not sure! I think Hull, Middlesborough, Norwich & Leeds will be the teams fighting for the title & autos with the 3 relegated plus Coventry, West Brom, QPR & Sheffield Wednesday pushing for playoff contention and maybe one surprise from league 1 like Derby!
But knowing the championship all these teams will be separated by 3 points with 10 games to go! Will look forward to another season of competitive football in the best league in the world!

When Sheffield United were promoted at the end of last season, they were already an ageing squad. Sneaking up again will have helped the club’s bank balance no doubt, but the squad that has returned to the CH is no less long in the tooth.
Rather than comb through the entire squad, it’s quicker just to highlight the star quality that may or may not stick around. Gustavo Hamer and Anel Ahmedhodzic are excellent - PL quality players by any reasonable metric. Will the Blades be able to keep hold of them both? I’m not sure.
One of the reasons Sheffield United were at least able to show some level of fight in the second half of the season was because they brought in Brereton Diaz on loan from Villareal. Six goals in fourteen league appearances. Not bad, considering they were a team rooted to the bottom of the league. But he’s gone now, and I’m assuming they won’t be able to make the move permanent. Ben has shown he can deliver at PL level, so I’m not convinced he’d want to move back to the CH.
I’m not saying the Blades will have a bad season, but I think their squad is due a bit of a reset. 10th maybe - which is fine? There’s no shame in a consolidation season. But of the three relegated teams, I’m not convinced the bouncebackability (I can’t believe spellchecker agrees with this! - ed) will be there. As Iain Dowie would love to say.

be amazed if Luton don't finish top 2
tbh I don't think the manager appointment is as important as people make out, Watford went up with Xisco Munoz, Fulham and Bournemouth both gone up with Scott Parker, I think as long as Burnley don't appoint someone ridiculous like Bruce, I can't see us finishing any lower than 3rd, in my mind there's a clear quality gap between Luton Burnley Leeds and everyone else

Problem is we are likely to lose a few key players from our squad. Including Doughty, Barkley and Teden Mengi. We of course don't have Kabore or Lokonga who were key assets last season for us. So although we were the best out of the three promoted sides last season, with likely losing all of those key assets, it could be a lot more challenging than people think for us, the transfer window is going to be more important than ever for us this season to replace them. We do hopefully have Ryan Giles and a few others coming back from loans which could be like new signings, with injury returns from Andersen and Nakamba so they will be huge. It will be interesting.

My guess is one will finish top two, one in the playoffs and one mid table.
How that will play out is harder to guess. Luton or Blades promoted, any of the three could be playoffs and Burnley or Sheffield United in mid table. Can’t see Luton finishing outside the top 6 or Burnley recovering quickly enough from losing their manager to make top 2.

FACT: If you only take into account 3-points-for-a-win seasons in English football, the last time 2 out of 3 newly relegated teams from the top division of English football ended up getting relegated again was all the way back in the 1984/85 season. It was the season in which the second tier had 22 teams and the bottom 3 went down to the third tier. 2 of those teams were Notts County and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Since the second tier of English football had 24 teams in every season, there have been 3 occasions when at least one newly relegated team from the top flight ended up getting relegated again (Swindon Town in 1995, Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2013, Sunderland in 2018). Swindon Town was probably the most unlucky one because it was the bottom 4 teams going down instead of the usual 3. Wolverhampton Wanderers got 51 points, a tally which usually keeps you up in the Championship, finished 23rd, and Sunderland was the worst of the 3.

As with any club, it all comes down to recruitment and who they bring in. Of the 3, I think Luton are more equipped assuming Edwards stays. Burnley are an unknown quantity at this point as we don't know who'll replace Kompany. Sheff Utd need a big rebuild, not to mention they're starting on -2 points. I think the race for promotion will be more open next season and I'm excited for it.

Luton fan here, we have had excellent recruitment strategies in past seasons which elavated us to the "promised land" our first adventure in the Premier league as its called now. This must continue now we are back here again in the championship and will be key to our chances of a straight bounce back return to the Prem. This ultimately goes down to the running of the club, keeping hold of Rob Edwards, and of course Mick Hartford, the main man behind Lutons recruitment. We can do this.... COYH.

Let’s hope Sheffield Wednesday finally gets its management sorted out
Even after 24 years of No top tier
A place they was mostly in along with 3 Major Cup finals Europe ect in the early 1990s
Fanbase Wise they are Top tier amazing support with the most expensive tickets
The way the fans support their club is Unbelievable 💙👏👏👏
