A phone can very well show where the user is via its sensoric data. When you unlock the phone to use it, you are where the phone is. But even when you are not using it, it can still show the presence of a human or even its user. For example: You sleep with your phone next to you, the motion sensor of the phone will pick up a motion every time you roll over in bed. Or, the camera of your phone unlocks the phone, every time you face it while sleeping, depending how dark it is. Or, when speech activation (Siri) is active, the microphones might pick up some breathing or snoring. In some cases the wifi signal strength and variance detected by the phone also varies with a human next to it (although it cannot detect which human. Signal can also be altered by other things of course).
Obviously all that could be faked, but it is very unlikely that a normal person knows how to do that and/or has the means to do so. (Since this guy used the phone several times that night, biometric user interaction should be available.)

I texted an ex “are you alive” because I’d seen he’d not been posting on Instagram. It turns out he’d been in a serious motorcycle accident where he went face first (no helmet) and ground the top portion of his face so bad that he’s now blind. He broke an arm and leg and required a lot of facial reconstruction surgery. I felt guilty about that text for years, especially because the read receipts showed he’d “seen” it, or had it read to him.

One thing that isn't at all different... the cops are assuming he is guilty and fully operating as if he is guilty. He was foolish to go to a police station and subject himself to an interrogation. He could help an investigation without putting himself, or his property, in danger.

This isn’t an interrogation it is a simple interview of a witness who is only trying to help find the killer of his friend. The difference between an interview and an interrogation is an ACCUSATION involving the person with whom you’re speaking. The atmosphere in the room is obviously less stressful as there is no risk of it ending in an arrest.

I get what you're saying, but I think they were trying to determine the reason she didn't want to tell him - what reaction she wanted to avoid. Was she only afraid of hurting his feelings, but also afraid of him hurting her back, etc.
Not so much about the reason an ex doesn't want to hear about their ex's current relationships, more about their specific reaction and how that dislike is expressed. Having a negative reaction and not liking something can be natural, but that "negative reaction" can include just being sad inside, to getting angry & lashing out.
(It's natural for people to not like loud music & even acceptable to complain, but it's not ok to react violently - if you get my reference haha.)
I also feel like there's the specifics of the details mattering and then there's lying about the details.
Meaning, there's always the opportunity to not just find red flags in someone's response, but to find out that they're either not honest, or lack awareness of reality.

If an investigator legitimately stumbles upon information, they don’t need to have Mirandized although they should once the person becomes a suspect. Same thing, they don’t need a search warrant (say they were interviewing a neighbor of a victim at home about a car seen driving away from the scene and went to the bathroom; in the bathroom trash they spotted a bloody rag that matched fibers - no search warrant needed … but if they had had a reason to think that neighbor was a suspect and they were “interviewing” them in order to have an excuse to poke around the house a bit, that is not okay and you need to get a search warrant).

I'm gonna play the bad guy here and say what these people are doing is doing is risky without legal representation. The police are clearly viewing them as suspects during this interrogation. Neither of them witnessed the crime nor does any of the information they provided shed any clues as to the perpetrator of the murder. They have no way of knowing what even the most benign information they give might be perceived by the police and mistakenly used against them.
Essentially they are trying to rule themselves out as possible suspects; something that would have been better served by making no statements at all. In the words of Professor James Duane - "Nothing you say to the police can be used to help you at trial (hearsay), however everything you say absolutely CAN and WILL be used against you.

I’m speculating but its mostly used as leverage tactic in questioning than evidence in court. A investigator telling you in close proximity that “you failed a polygraph test” can be used to intimidate a suspect.
