Popular fan theory: There was only a vacancy for Prime Minister because the Doctor deposed Harriet Jones. The Doctor created the space that The Master filled.
@@BritanyBinges plus in series 1 they state she was meant to lead for 3 consecutive terms. that's 15 years. Instead, the Doctor reduced her tenure to a matter of weeks. There would have been absolutely no room for the Master to do this if the Doctor had left Harriet to her business.

It’s good that you note the similarities with the Doctor and the Master. This was RTD’s intention with John Simm’s version is that he would be almost like the Doctor’s opposite, which he is, he’s a maniac! Masterful performance by John Simm👏🏻
10:50 - Or, as Douglas Adams put it in one of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy books.... "An SEP Field.... where SEP means 'Somebody Else's Problem'. You brain sees it, but ignores it as 'Somebody Else's Problem'."
Douglas Adams used to write for Doctor Who in the '70s. They have referenced it a few times with Tennant, at least. The episode 42, and in Christmas Invasion, where he mentioned saving the world in his pajamas, and how that was very "Arthur Dent" of him. :)
I genuinely think the only reason Martha’s brother wasn’t caught was because Reggie Yates wasn’t able to commit to filming more than that one scene. He’s a pretty successful tv presenter over here in the UK.
@thepandorica1660 S7 finale was my favourite regeneration though. I personally like S6's finale, but I think that after Daleks, the Master and Big Bang 2 the bar was set super high
So "Mr.Saxon" and his goverment have been referenced as far back as series 2. Back in Series 2 episode 10 Love & Monsters (You know with the uh.. Absorbaloff) Victor Kennedy was seen reading a newspaper with the headline about "Saxon leading the polls". You can also spot "vote saxon" posters in the background of series 3 episode 1 smith and jones and there were even a couple vote saxon posters in a few Torchwood episodes.
Douglas Adams created the idea of something like the perception filter (before either Doctor Who writers or JK Rowling) for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, he called it an SEP field (Someone Else's Problem, as it's someone else's problem everyone ignores it), I don't know if he was the first to float the idea but he deserves the mention.
I started to dislike them when I found out they'd voted Saxon. I had no problem with Sharon Osbourne voting Saxon as I've always disliked her. She would've voted for him without the drumming.
The band is Mcfly, they had UK number ones with '5 colours in her hair' & 'All about You'. Mcfly 'duelled' with a band called Busted, then hired the remaining guitarist pair after Busted's lead singer/ guitarist left. Conesquently, the McBusted Tour had a 5 electric guitarist group - which is rare.
At school on the Monday this came out I remember I started tapping on the floor in assembly, doing the four taps. A few of my friends got what I was doing and joined in and then I guess everyone in the school who was a Doctor Who fan picked up on it and joined in. It started getting quite loud and I thought my joke might have got a little out of hand but luckily none of the teachers knew who started it and to be honest, I am pretty sure no one besides my friends knew. The teachers didn't know what was going on but they were quite annoyed by it. 8 Year olds are dumb but it was funny.

So Britany, the song that played after The Master says "Here come the Drums" is called "Voodoo Child" by the Rogue Traders, an Australian rock band from the 2000s & it is sung by the lead singer, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and she's well known in Neighbours like Kylie Minogue & also the host of So You Think You Can Dance Australia in it's first 3 seasons which i did used to watch back in the day even though the American version was also airing at this time. So the notable thing about SYTYCD Australia was one of the contestants was Isabel Durant who also has some acting, well known in Dance Academy S2 & 3, Mako Mermaids S2 & 3 (H2O's spinoff) & Day of Our Lives which is a American Soap Opera tv series that I think is still running like with Home and Away & Neighbours in Australia.
The weird thing to this is the UK is a parliamentary system meaning you'd vote party not a person to pick a Prime Minister. It's not like a U.S. election where we vote for a President. It's more like congress party with the most seats pick the Speaker. The Head of the party with the most Parliamentary seats becomes Prime Minister. The only people who vote for the PM are from their local district like a member of Congress. I'd understand a U.S. show making this kind of mistake, but for a UK show to seems strange.
@@BritanyBingesI think RTD is a little fuzzy about the details of politics. Like having President Winters refer to himself as 'President-elect'. I think RTD heard it used somewhere, didn't know exactly what it meant, but thought it sounded good!
@@Will-nn6ux Id always assumed him calling himself President Elect would mean that this episode would take place sometime after first 8th November latest and January 20th.
On The Master's background yes that's definately all you need to know. 😊 Not everything needs an explanation the mystery and the unexplained makes it more exciting.
Possible spoiler for Classic.... The Master was originally the best friend of The Doctor, though that is seldom shown. But he wemt a different route. The third Doctor actor, Jon Pertwee, was actually great friends with the original actor who played The Master. When the latter died, Jon Pertwee decided to retire from being The Doctor. Other actors played The Master afterwards. The relationship between the actors interestingly reflected the original relationship between the Time :Lords though their roles were antagonistic.
The Master works at his best when he is presented as the mirror image of the Doctor. They are very similar in some ways but went in opposite directions. This is the way it is being portrayed here, as it was when the Master was first introduced opposite the (I won't say which) Doctor.
The Master and Doctor are often constipated. Different side of the same coin. The Simm Master most defiantly took parts of the 10th Doctor's personally when he regenerated. But that being said even the time lords consider the Master evil. Calling him the most corrupt being in the universe.
Obviously, you know more about the Master now, but they did a fair job reintroducing him while keeping him mysterious to those who didn't watch old Who at this stage.
The Doctor really likes the Earth so a lot of the story's are based on Earth despite there being trillions of other planets around. And it is absolutely NOTHING to do with budget constraints whatsoever.... Also at this point mostly filmed in Cardiff Wales. Youll notice in old Who how many episodes filmed in a disused quarry. Keep a tally when you notice it 😆
I Really love this episode and the whole political thriller vibe, also that cliffhanger with the score Martha’s Quest playing is one of my favourites. Looking forward to next weeks! 👀
During the flashback scene the child version of the master is wearing a black and white robe identical to the ones worn by the time lords in 'the war games' also in that story the war chief was not supposed to be the master, even tho he is very master like. So i just pretend he is an incarnation of the master lol
It's funny you say that, because I thought the same thing. When I was watching that story, I wondered if that character inspired the creation of the Master later on because they seemed so similar. I even talked about it during the reactions. :)
