A lot of these folks do this for charities close to their hearts and/or to challenge themselves to doing something they never thought they could do or other people told them they could never do. Congratulations to these guys for pushing through for a great cause and for themselves! You guys can do anything and are a marathoner in my book! I ran on Sunday and am still sore, I'm sure they are even more sore moving that long! ❤
Years ago I handed out medals had to finish line of the Illinois Marathon. My favorite part was seeing people finish right as the course was closing (around 5 hrs). They were all saying it was a bucket list item that they checked off to finish a marathon and I couldn't have been more proud of them!
While the elite runners doing the race around 3 hours is incredible, what’s also incredible is continuing on your feet for 6+ hours, that’s amazing endurance 🎉
@@johnmccracken3473 that is still not elite😂 more like sub 2.30 for women and something like sub 2.20 for men. I am pretty sure I should be able to go somewhere near 2.50 with some more training in a few years and I am a woman- definetly not elite tho.
@@beansandrunning That is still not elite. More like sub 2:25/2:20 for women and sub 2:10 for men. See how we could go on and on lol. OP was probably saying anything 3 hours or under is elite compared to the average runners, and he/she is right. Either way, the point they were making is about time spent on the pavement so what's truly elite or not doesn't matter here. But some people always feels the need to "correct" someone else even if it means missing their original point...
There is an interesting mix of comments here. I can speak first hand to walking a full marathon. I am overweight (less then and obviously younger), trained by walking increased distances for months previously, have heel spurs, but still chose to raise funds for a cause. I've never been athletic, so this was a huge endeavor. I finished the 2002 Honolulu Marathon in 10:24:29! That is a huge accomplishment for me and a heck of a long time to walk, but I finished! Sadly, some people had medical issues and couldn't finish. Even worse, a headline the following day was that a 33yo man finished in 4:57, then collapsed and died.
@@chuckd5819 😆🤣😂, agree, people should really not be doing marathons if it takes more than 6 hours... kind of counterproductive, but it is what it is 🤷♂️. These things are all a cash grab anyway.
@chuckd5819 You do not need to qualify for NYC, Chicago, and a lot of others, you just need to be extremely lucky or do charity. Boston, you need to qualify.
Take a good look at the final finishers. They obviously walked the entire distance and did very little training. They are very heavyset. Keeping that in mind, good for them for finishing.
For me, fast paced walking is also around 7.5 hours for a marathon distance, but I've had two very long legged people keep up with my fast jog by just walking at a leisurely pace. That experience really opened my eyes at how body structure makes a difference.
I lied. I just did the math, for me a fast pace walk would be a 6:45 hour marathon, and a leisure pace walk would be 7.5 hours. Jogging at 4 MPH would make me finish at 6 hour cut off
@@iDesper I’ve tried running and know exactly how hard it is. It’s hard for someone like this woman to run a race, knowing she won’t come in first, knowing there will be no cheering section for her, but she did it anyway. She finished anyway. That’s what I’m impressed with. If you are confident in your abilities, you’d be okay with someone like her getting a bit attention.
@@PatriciaB-d8x yeah yeah sure but the amount of work put in by the top runners (including females) cannot be underestimated for someone who walked most of the race
I'm glad they gave medals for people who finished even after the cutoff time! They did finish the entire race, so I think they deserve it. 👍

Congratulations to all the runners. The great Eliud Kipchoge once said "Everyone who completes Marathon wins Marathon." Knees up chin up keep going.
This is honestly SO HARD, props to them. Moving for 12 hours is intense, doesn't matter what distance is covered in the end.

Three hours is very good but not elite. Try sub 2.30 for guys and 2.45 for gals
@@Conejoblanco-7726 3 hours is approaching sub elite. Elites are the fastest, much faster than 3 hours.

That’s awesome that people stayed for the last runners to finish. All runners need that support
Warms my heart that runners finishing after cutoff are celebrated. Chicago is a city of great people.
Congratulations!
Good job! 👏🏾

how do you qualify for the chicago marathon if it takes you 12 hours?
lottery system
I won an entry through a sponsor.

It takes me 7.5-8h to walk marathon distance at lazy pace, just for perspective.
Bullshit. I run 2 marathons per year, and walk 1 at a fast pace. Fast pace is 7.5 hours. A lazy pace would be 9 hours.
Unless you have long legs and your stride is longer..

So resilient = slow?

12 hours? Amazing! I thought that my 6.25 was a long time!!

@jesussalas2407 That obese person ran a marathon while you never will. 🫢🤡

That's not running. Most people walk faster than that.
It's running for them and that's all that matters, not anyone else opinion

And also, it's not an opinion; it's kinesiology. When you have at least one foot on the ground, it's definitionally walking. They walked.

What is your current marathon time? 🤔🤔🤔
why not just be happy for her? She put some training into it and it was surely not easy
