AoE 2: 3 Player FFA Regicide

- Commentated online Age of Empires 2 HD game between 3 players in a 1v1v1 free for all. I am playing Japanese in yellow, against Goths in orange, and Italians in red.

I have to say that I do detest people who feel like they need to be dishonest to gain an advantage. I'm glad you defeated these little pricks, the red king dying to orange huskarls was just poetic justice.
khatack on the other hand, they didn't kick me for having a higher elo, which was pretty cool of them if they were planning to 2v1. It made for a more interesting game, too :D
+khatack The worst part is that it's very hard to get a ffa game going. I was once inadvertently in a 3v1 ffa because three players teamed up but they were all so bad at dealing with a hardcore turtle that I bored all but one of them into quitting. I was mowing down entire goth armies with seige onagers, then mowing down entire hun cav archer armies with the same onagers.
Problem is the sheer numbers of units to deal with, so I lost several bases, but they never really prevented me from moving into other bases.
They would have won if they had traded, which is the biggest problem with cheaty ffa players. You can't trade in ffa usually unless you conquor somebody. If they trade while both alive they have effectively infinite resources while in very long games the map runs out of wood. In that game I would have died just because there wouldn't have been any wood left.
Actually team-ups are cheating. Typically people will team in an FFA to knock somebody out, but then they don't betray the other, they just drop, because the intention was always to do a 3v1v1v1v1v1 and not a real FFA. Also it's extremely rare not to get knocked out of the game entirely by the teamup, because they are not treating the game like an FFA. They are treating the game like a very easy team game.
You're referring more to a "diplomacy" game where betrayals and teaming and reteaming are kind of the entire point.
Also it's never a secret when people are teaming. It's usually very obvious.
Last - scores get high when somebody is getting teamed on because the only strategy you can really fall back on is epic turtling, which usually causes your score to shoot up because you're getting way more kills than you lose units especially when your opponent starts spamming trash.
Depends entirely on whether you decide this beforehand. FFA is about every man for himself. Two buddies sitting in the same room with a decision to trade with each others because they've decided beforehand to be allies is indeed just cheating because it gives them a massive advantage.
This is also why teaming up is a bannable offense in Fortnite. It gives you an advantage over those not playing and coordinating with their buddies.

Btw, have you ever tried nomad regicide? It's more tense since you don't start with a castle, but you can use the king to scout for a good starting location.

+Spirit Of The Law I have a question, is it possible in this Steam version of AOE2 to destroy our own buildings? 'Cause a sneaky tactic is to use this against the ennemy, wall up the places where there isn't any ennemy fortifications and let let the others stay in place. This way, he can't destroy his own building and is thus trapped.

Red just seems like a very new player. That's probably why they thought it was justified to 2v1.

It is good to be the king.
I love playing regicide, it adds sneaky assassination strikes on top of the raiding and big pushes and whatnot. Just don't forget where you put the king if you send him exploring or that he isn't inside a castle.

Red didn't utilize his resources well, he seemed too passive, probably because he thought Orange was going to save him, but didn't turn out that way. I guess that's what happens when you try to team up in a ffa. Glad you beat them Spirit. Maybe next time they will think twice before doing that stunt again, or if they are going to at least be great at the game.

At times I feel you play too defensive you should form your houses to create a choke point instead of making a wall of houses

Have you branched out from the Japanese since you played this game?
It seems like you had extra resources, Spirit. Is there any reason that you did not create a second army to defend your base from Orange? Were you trying to keep money in the bank in case your first army was destroyed when attacking Red?

+James Covenant In FFAs it's often smart to be a bit conservative about your recources if you have a deicent army.
