We do the balls in the cupcake pan, but only put one treat in it and fill with tennis balls. Then my dog has to figure out which ball needs to be moved to find the treat. Pretty quick they figure out they don’t have to remove all the balls, only the one with the treat under it. But they need to work at, to figure out which ball is the one to remove.

Hide and seek. If your dog can walk around the house then try hiding in another room. If not use a blanket or hide in a closet.
On walks I would wait till our furry princess was deep into sniffing and absorbed in the environment and I would signal my better half to stop while the princess and I continued. We got mayhe thirty to fifty yards.
When she would perk up her ears, sniff the air and stop. You could see her brain working out the problem. Something was missing. A sent got weak, a sound stopped. Then the penny dropped. "Mommy!" she raised her nose in the air, quickly turned and saw her mommy many yards away. I told her to go find Mommy and she was off like a shot.
Her Mama gave her positive reinforcement. Assured her she was a good girl.
I joined them and told princess she was a smart girl.
