We do this with our Corso only we have trained him for scent work. He sits and waits while my kids hide the scent marked ball in the woods, this part often takes 10 min or so, they come and point in the direction they hid the ball and tell him to search, the search area is 2 acres (woods/field) and he will persist in looking until he finds it, as little as a few min to well over 15 looking. He also LOVES playing it. Will do it over and over and over if allowed. Wonderful way to burn off energy.

I do this on a much smaller scale (we’re building up to farther and farther distances) with my 7 month old Aussie pup. I toss the ball across the room, have her hold a stay, then release. I also add a bucket that she drops the ball in afterwards to work on coordination. She is wiped after just a few reps!

Totally agree, I do this with my three but I throw it in all sorts of random places like bushes. Had no idea it was called aegons game we just say find it. We also do a lot of flirt pole for the reasons you say 😁👍

Where i live this is sort of normalized among dog people. For one because of the high excitement but also because the abrupt stops a flying chase can lead to joint problems, we saw that a lot in Agility dogs like Border Collies who would have to make insanely tight turns after jumps and would end up retiring at 6 because of joint problems. Now parcours with tight turns like these are frowned upon fortunately.
Oh and you can even up the game by teaching your dog to differentiate between two toys and then throw both and it has to return the right one. Even add a free shaping element like wanting the dog to go heel after bringing the toy or push the toy to your stomach (i like doing this because its useful in SD tasks)

If your dog knows the game, it’s not so tiring anymore. You can cover his eyes when you throw the ball. That way your dog has to use it’s nose more because hè can’t see in what direction you threw the ball. But first make sure he knows the game.

Get a big dog sized hamster wheel for your dog.
You can watch videos here on TH-cam of big dogs on hamster wheels.
The dog can drain all the energy running on it.

How many times do you do this for to really tire him out? I throw a tennis ball or food in long grass for my springer to find after doing retrieves with either ball or dummy. He does love a tennis ball

BUY A TREADMILL AND GET UP THERE YOU DOG MAKE HIM RUN FAST FOR 30 MINUTES TAKES A BREAK FOR 5 MINUTES GIVE HIM SOME WATER AND AGING ANOTHER 45 MINUTES HE WILL BE TIRED ENOUGH. WITH THE TIME YOU. CAN ADD MORE TIME AND FAST 🤜🖐

My dog plays this but after 4 or 5th throw he’ll proceed to look for it and about half way she will get bored and find another scent or she just proceeds to sit and watch. She is a Karelian bear dog.

The main difference is in impulse control. My 1yr rescue GSD literally had no impulse control whatsoever. Next to chasing rabbits or playing with other dogs, ball is the one thing to really get her going. It teaches her to stay, even when there's high distraction and the waiting part for her is more tiring than any game of ball ever could be.

What don’t you get my friend? Instead of the dog running continuously on adrenaline and excitement the dog gets more tired through the combination of impulse control, running and nose work..

This is fetch if you have a hunting dog duck dogs will stay un tell you realsse them then get it hack to you

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

but that only happens if you train them. I have a hunting dog and she wont wait, she would go after the toy as soon as I throw it. The same happened with my previous hunting dog

i mean that works, but its not particularly great for working dogs. Being able to wear them out mentally and physically while also keeping their training at tip top shape is the goal.

Why would you want to tire your dog out “really fast” you shouldn’t have a dog if that’s what you want 😂 you need to teach people to spend time with they’re dog, spend time outside and having fun with they’re dog, keeping they’re dog fit and healthy, not fat lazy and don’t do anything with they’re animal because it’s the “fast way”

It’s 115 where I live so I need something fast right now. When I wake up at 6am it’s already 90. My GSD gets over heated fast. In a month it will cool down and be in the 80s. I can’t work my dog in these temperatures, it’s not safe.

@@karlie_s “such a ridiculous comment” 🤣 1 I have all of those and an apbt If you knew anything about that, and 2 don’t get a dog if you can’t commit to it. I’ve had high energy dogs most of my life don’t try to act like you need a fast way to burn out your dog to meet its needs, if you knew anything about dogs it doesn’t take a long time to “meet its needs” all it takes is consistency with an activity. And if anything if your not committed to having to take the time with the dog DONT GET A HIGH DRIVE OR ENERGY DOG🤡🤡😂😂

How do you teach them to actually go get the toy after you throw it ? my girl loves toys and will chase after them and play for days, but when i incorporate a sit stay, on release she’s totally lost interest on the toy i threw 🥲
