Just a note, those first pieces of wood you show us cutting. It's not plywood, it's particleboard. So make sure it's sealed well because particleboard swells if it gets wet. It's a useful alternative to plywood which is more expensive but steps need to be taken to keep it safe from water.
Technically its not particle board, which has a super rough finish. It is, however, high-density fiberboard which is what many cabinets and baseboards are made from. Painting will waterproof it, BUT the bottom that is touching the floor has not been painted. Next time I would suggest painting all sides before installing. Applying a bead of silicone that later can be easily removed from the tile surface will also stop any water from getting under the shelving unit. This is also why you should also always silicone on any baseboards in a bathroom or kitchen as they, too, are never painted on the bottom or backside.
@@1jmass plexiglass scratches way too easily for such a small space. Realize most bathroom cabinets are, in fact, made with high density fibre board - the same material.
I might use wide white shelving that can be cut to the right length for sides and interior shelving, the white melamine surface is used on cabinets in bathrooms and is water resistant, also lifting up the bottom shelf to clear the floor would be another detail to consider in his great idea for bathroom storage.
While we are not renters, I still like learning renter-friendly techniques because sometimes I want to spruce something up but not make a permanent change. I love painters tape - my younger daughter put up a wall of posters and photos using painters tape and 5 years later, pulling it off, there’s no residue. This wouldn’t be true of masking tape (ask me how I know!). My only concern with Drew’s method was whether the wallpaper paste could penetrate the painters tape, but he tested that so it’s all good.
Agreed! We are homeowners, but I love the flexibility to try new things and be able to change things out. Thanks, Drew. You're soooo talented and I love your style!
@@lonefox that's great you had that experience this time, but you really can't guarantee with "painter's tape" that it won't pull up paint, especially the longer that it's left. Especially with this volume. Overarchingly, the evidence from decades of jobs still shows you should not apply painters' tape long-term if you need the surface underneath to keep its paint coating. It's one thing to do yourself, another to suggest that any adhesive peel-n-stick wall treatment is not truly renter-friendly, and to proceed with extreme caution (lightly applying the tape, not pressing down hard) and to have a backup plan (color-matched paint). I know you do projects often, but knowing professional painters has taught me that the experience you're paying for is all the problems that "don't" happen on a job. Otherwise, great and creative vid!
YES! I was thinking this same thing. I have a home and have been wanting to change up our bathroom but haven't because I'm hesitant about permanent changes so these ideas were mind blowing to me and soooo helpful!
I absolutely agree about just not wanting to commit to a permanent change for a room even when you own your house! My only question about the painter's tape and wallpaper paste was whether the moisture of the bathroom would effect the adhesive? I worked at Sherwin Williams for years and would not be concerned with the tape damaging the wall or paint as long as you used painter's tape.
I love this makeover! I would be interested in knowing how well it all holds up over time, my only concern would be that the bathroom is a high moisture area.
Heads up, if you leave painters tape on the wall for extended time the glue breaks down and when you go to take it off it can pull the under paint off.
AND the drywall paper UNDER the paint. This is a terrible idea. the other option is that within a month, humidity from the shower will have everything peeling off anyway.

It looks stunning!! I love the fake breadboard. And how stunning were the bones you got to work with, like the tiles and the toilet+sink, both so pretty! For people who want to do the vanity: it's better to have legs on a vanity because it could get wet from the bottom in a bathroom and create mold issues if air can't get under there (or water damage to the structural integrity of the vanity). You could still use the exact same steps, just subtract the height of the legs from the height of the box and screw them under. They don't have to be tall to be functional. (Yes, I have learned this the hard way 😅😆)
Just a tip for next time. When putting up wallpaper, you can also use cardboard, foam or paper posterboards. Just stick the wallpaper to the posterboards and nail the posterboards to the wall
Yes! This is what we're doing on our peel and stick project to make sure we don't have any residue left behind on the walls and create a problem when we want to change it up again. Also massively opens up our selection if we don't go peek and stick.
Somehow that picture above the toilet looks like it has dimension, like it stands out in places -- very cool. Bathroom looks great. Landlord has no idea what he is missing by not letting you have your way in there; you probably would have raised the value of the property a bit, haha.
Yeah, the storage idea is great but he used a really cheap material that's going to bend/break if they try and put anything heavy on the shelves and will swell when there's steam in the bathroom.
Definitely, that particle board is going to mold in no time, could have done some small height adjustable legs underneath, maybe with a skirt of pvc trim to keep the grounded look
Fun makeover. Was thinking you might've gone with bit more color in the beadboard. A towel is obviously needed near the sink and placing the hook where you did also allows for the towel to hide the outlet while being conveniently located. However, even if GFI, the potential for a hanging wet towel, or when reaching with wet hands/face, being over the outlet would make me nervous.
I know that this video is 1yr old. However I had to say thank you. I have a sink exactly like that one. I've been searching for a diy I can do to give me more storage and finally found you. The whole project was amazing.
Beautifully done. I am a landlord and I cannot imagine that anyone in their right mind would want them to take this down at the end of their tenancy. I love it ❤️
I love the Roman shade so much, I went and looked her tutorial up and am definitely going to try it. Also, painters tape shouldn't be left on anything longer than 14 days because it can rip up paint, not to mention it's nearly impossible to get the residue off. What is important at the bottom of that bathroom cabinet is the toe kick/ Toe space. Without that it's very uncomfortable. Just lift the bottom piece up a few inches instead of having it flat on the ground.

Omg I wanted to do the faux beadboard in my apartment but gave up on the idea bc I couldn’t find a decent paper for it but now I want to revisit the idea! Great work 👏
I also have a rental that doesn't allow paint or other modifications to the walls, and I used command strips (a LOT of command strips) to attach real beadboard to the wall. You can remove command strips that you cant get to by running a long piece of dental floss behind your object and sawing back and forth to "cut" the command strip off. Used this hack for years, works great, never though that there would be wallpaper that mimics the same thing!
Super cute! I would be interested in a follow-up if they ever move to see how easily that wallpaper is removed after some time in a small humid room. The only change I would make is perhaps finding a light fixture/towel hook/accessories that were the same color or material.
I was thinking the same thing. Painter's tape can be hard to remove if left on for a longtime, and can peal off the actual paint underneath. YIkes! fingers crossed. But it looks so good, loved the vanity idea.
@@maryannht2160 I think it might depend on the brand because as I said in another comment, we pulled off painters tape that had been on several years and it was fine. I wonder if the blurbs that come with different brands might say whether they can be left on safely for a long time.
@@maryannht2160 He used blue painters tape which is one step less sticky than the green. Yellow is the least sticky but also doesn't stick well to old paint and is normally used over new tape to create a clean line without removing the fresh paint. Old paint is well cured and does not generally get damaged by blue tape.

Beautiful rental friendly makeover. Texture makes such a difference. Also, thank you for taking the time for viewers to fully appreciate the finished product. So many sites show the detail of the process, but rush through the end result.
Most of us have small and boring bathrooms, whether we're living in an apartment or a smaller and older home (not all of us live in McMansions), so this kind of inspiration is refreshing. Wondering if you painted behind the toilet tank. It's easy to reach in the back to paint if you remove the top of the tank and use a small roller on a short extension. Pet peeve: plain clear glass in bathroom windows. WHAT? That's not your fault of course, and the window does have the Roman shade on it, although it looks too thin to provide much opacity at night when the lights are on in the bathroom. Maybe guys don't think about that kind of thing as much.
I'm curious how the painters tape will hold up over time. My mother in law was going through her living room putting painters tape on the nicks and dings, intending on getting one of her kids to paint up the imperfections. She had it up for months. The tape ended up ripping off the paint under it since it was up for so long. You clearly made the bathroom a better space. Hopefully it cleans up easily when they are ready to move. :)
That’s what I thought, ripping up the paint is possible. Or it comes all down before because of the shower steam. And if not, there will be probably mold behind.
I wanted to tell you, that watching your videos just lifts my spirit up. Normally I watch them for the dose of aesthetic satisfaction, but this time I need some inspiration for my bathroom makeover, so an extra thank you for that 😊
Love what you did. It looks dreamy. Mind blowing what yoi were able to do without damaging the walls and completely complying to the landlord’s rules. Just love your designs. Thanks so much for sharing and God bless.
Never thought to cover wall with painters tape. I've seen other designers cover foam board and attach it to wall with command strips. Just a suggestion to save time. Thanks for sharing ur creativity 🙂
Magic !! And you're really working those roman shades 🤩. I know for a fact that A LOT of people are looking forward to these renter friendly hacks in small places and your work is appreciated 👍👍
tiiiiny bathroom... FOUR LIGHT SWITCHES! Also a procrastinator who left painter's tape on the walls for two years during a stalled reno because I was too lazy to remove and retape... I strongly suggest NOT leaving painter's tape on the wall more than a few weeks. This *might* be a nightmare to remove. I'm sure there's some sort of exceptionally high end tape that someone here is going to comment and say, "Nuh, uh, it's fine, I did it before." Just a warning that it *might* not be as renter-friendly as you think if you have the same experience as me. And since it's in a very moist environment, thinking it's less likely to come off as easy as a dry environment. We had less issue in the back bedroom than our own bathroom getting it off the walls.
Yikes. I've never left painter's tape on, but wondered about it. I have used similar special low-tack tape made for masking off watercolor paper and that removes very nicely from paper - UNLESS you leave it on for more than a short while and then it can rip up paper and ruin your painting.
Incredible! Love everything you do. I have never once thought to myself ugh dont like that!!! Haha another winner. You are very talented and you inspire me. Thanks Drew.
My heart leaped when you hung the flower picture over the toilet… my mom painted exactly the same picture in a painting class… she passed several years ago… she framed it in a very similar frame ❤️💔
My compliments Drew on creating such a beautiful bathroom for your friends. Your kindness, thoughtfulness and consideration shines through in everything you do. You must be the hardest working person on TH-cam. Well done!
Scares me for the long run with that under sink shelving being on the floor. That wood will expand when wet and with it being in the bathroom right by the shower that’s inevitable. I always love the final products of your room renos but wanted to share that bit!
I wouldn’t change a thing you did! It’s perfect. Ingenious idea with the tape & paste wall paper. At first I thought the mirror should be framed but I changed my mind quickly. Love that vanity, the texture of the Roman shade, I’m actually glad you had to go with the 2nd light fixture. I think it adds a simple elegance to the space. Great job. 🎉
Wow I find it so crazy that landlords are aloud to forbid that kind of stuff. I work for a housing company in Germany and never in a million years would we be aloud to forbid the tenants to paint their walls or add wallpaper.. but given the circumstances, I absolutely love the outcome of the makeover! There’s never a design or diy I don’t like ✨ love your work!
I agree ! In France like in Germany renters are allowed to paint , add wallpaper and nail into walls.(the place has to be like day1 when you move) Surprising this landlord does not want paint although it is easier to redo comparing to screws holes in walls :)
That vanity is so smart! “Back in the old days” we used to sew a skirt to fit around those sinks to hide storage behind, but your brilliant idea is so much more attractive. Also, for folks who don’t have saws, many places that sell wood will cut your pieces to size for you.
I'm a renter, an am so happy seeing you do renter friendly DIYs. I've wanted to do bead board, but couldn't because of the cost, and I rent. I'm so going to try it now. The Roman shade looks awesome. I love the fabric you chose to use. I love your sweet face, and cheery personality. Another winning redo Drew! 👍💖🤗
I love the design of the under sink storage but why did you use OSB in a potentially wet environment? I think using traditional plywood would have been a much more durable option.
You are so clever to find lovely, renter-friendly options without compromising the end results! It turned out great and has given me some options to use in my own rental. Thanks Drew!
landlords really be out here having some AUDACITY to say people can't paint their homes? That's horrible. Just give the condition they can paint it as long as they repaint it the original colour when they move out...
Indeed yes. There was a couple opposite me whose rental home was painted in garish 70's orange. They wanted neutral shades. Can you believe their landlord was yeah, okay as long as you return all walls to their original colour!!!
maybe landlords are afraid that renters will do insanely bad jobs as they aren’t professional painters, such as in my last apartment where someone had gotten paint all over the inside of a beveled window, and had painted shut a couple of other windows. And had made it impossible to close one of the drawers in a built in cabinet.

You are such a sweet human being and your videos are terrific. I'm 77 years old and the highlight of my day is watching your videos. I love them and I love you
Omg I wanted to do the faux beadboard in my apartment but gave up on the idea bc I couldn’t find a decent paper for it but now I want to revisit the idea!
I agree! I’d love to remove all of this and share the process on my IG if they plan on moving in the future
Drew strikes again! Beautiful job. I also love that you always call out the other creators that that inspire you and amplify them on your platform💛
That is so amazing. Well done, Drew. I saw the before bathroom and thought, "what can you do with that?" No idea it would look so good in the after pictures. You are so talented. Thanks for the weekly inspiration.
Wow! This is so nice, I like how it looks classic, like they can keep it this way for years and it won't look dated.
I have the exact same limitations in my rental bathroom. I will now have a design for a cabinet under my sink. This is great!!! Love it. Fits my limited budget too!😁
Same!
You are so talented, it´s unbelievable! I wish I had a friend like that. Thank you for taking us along! Much love to you!
What a stunning makeover! Loved the vanity and the framed art.
I'm obsessed! This is why drew is my most favorite among my favorites DIY-er. He's simply the best.
SOOOO TALENTED!! You can make anything so beautiful and affordable too! Your ideas and editing and creativity are amazing. Keep working hard. We love your content you put out and how it keeps getting better and better. So proud of you Drew. MOM ☺️
Seriously...I have not ever commented on TH-cam! Your ideas and natural talent are inspiring, particularly for a person who is not a "maker/DIY'er" of stuff. Thank you so much for sharing yourself in these clips and your ideas. Simply amazing 💗 PS Your new home is going to be yours...just love it all, your way. Joy, light and gratitude all to you ✨️ 🙏 💛
BTW...I am the one who is not the maker...that could have been read differently to my intention 😅
The vanity is such a good hack for home owners with a tight budget too! I hate pedestal sinks but vanities cost as much as the makeover to replace 😅 so thats a super nice option!
I like pedestal sinks, but this isn’t a pedestal- it’s wall hung.
Some pedestal sinks are beautiful depending on the design.
@@ZZ_The_Boxing_Cat True! I was thinking about the ugly one in my parents bathroom while writing the comment lol
I learn so much from these videos. Like attaching trim with velcro or the heat-activated edging - I need these but never knew they existed!!
I am so ready for bathroom content, mine is looking tired 🥰
Bless you Drew! Adding storage make the space seem larger, very nice. The wainscoting wall paper look real, bringing character to the room. Thanks for sharing.❤️
So gorgeous!!!!!! I love the color palate- so calming and beautiful!
If you noticed, I think there's a film sticker on the window which made the window not fully visible from the outside.
There's film on the bathroom window.
And since he does this for a living, I would bet that he knows how to paint behind a toilet.
Love the rental friendly series… I think it helps people see different perspectives in how to style a small space.
Agree, the moisture from the bathroom will peel the tape in no time
I wanted to tell you, that watching your videos just lifts my spirit up. Normally I watch them for the dose of aesthetic satisfaction, but this time I need some inspiration for my bathroom makeover, so an extra thank you for that 😊
It's beautiful :) Love the storage under the sink, I would have added an over the toilet storage unit as well instead of art. Never enough storage :)
Yes - I was thinking even a couple of small floating shelves to hold a few facecloths or hand towels would be cool. Could prop art on it, too.
Huge difference for a small space. Just beautiful.
this is everything drew, love the “drama” killed it again. about to move into a big boy apartment and this gave me so many ideas!
Painters tape will become impossible to remove over time so it’s definitely not an easy route, so just be careful of that!
Drew, you are simply amazing and gifted. Your mind must be constantly working with ideas and redos. Beautiful job.
Incredible! Love everything you do. I have never once thought to myself ugh dont like that!!! Haha another winner. You are very talented and you inspire me. Thanks Drew.
Top Designer. I don't care that he doesn't have a fancy degree in design. He has a great taste and skills. I love everything
I agree ! In France like in Germany renters are allowed to paint , add wallpaper and nail into walls.(the place has to be like day1 when you move)
Surprising this landlord does not want paint although it is easier to redo comparing to screws holes in walls :)
In australia, you cant really do anything to rentals - not even nails in the wall without permission.

"so much drama right above the toilet" 😂😂😂
Love this! Your work is as beautiful as you are Drew!
Adorable. The best part for me is the little vase with the little buds.
That vanity is so smart! “Back in the old days” we used to sew a skirt to fit around those sinks to hide storage behind, but your brilliant idea is so much more attractive. Also, for folks who don’t have saws, many places that sell wood will cut your pieces to size for you.
Wow Drew! The vanity and the past wallpaper was genius. Made such a difference. It looks bigger. Love the decor choices.
Another beautiful makeover! Drew you really bring so much happiness to so many people, thank you for all your hard work!
So sweet of you to take the time to say that. He’s always been so happy like that since he was so young. That’s just Drew!!
@@delanascott8890 That's a reflection of his upbringing as well so Good Job!
It would have been better if he'd actually used OSB instead of the fiber/particle board stuff he used.
What I love about your projects is that they seem doable by the average person. Great job!
Wonderful makeover! The vanity storage is brilliant and I have to try making a Roman shade because it looks beautiful. Well done, Drew!
You are so clever to find lovely, renter-friendly options without compromising the end results! It turned out great and has given me some options to use in my own rental. Thanks Drew!
The particle board is going to swell and warp when exposed to moisture- it should be swapped out for something wet room-appropriate.
Can't imagine the landlord wanting it to go back the way it was when they move out one day. Huge upgrade.
I said the same exact thing
The toilet just being open the whole time is giving me the heebie jeebies. I never ever leave my toilet open, especially not when flushing!
Thought I was the only one who feels this way. Good to know I'm not alone
hate that !! it is bad Feng Shui...to leave the lid up, let alone the door open to a bathroom
I’m glad it’s not just me. It seems unsanitary. There’s a video that shows how particles from the toilet go airborne if the lid isn’t shut. Ew!
Its SO shocking to see professional real estate photos of homes for sale with the toilet seat up! Tacky.
Me too!! Drives me crazy!!
I love, love, love the vanity. The bathroom is adorable! You go Drew!
landlords really be out here having some AUDACITY to say people can't paint their homes?
Oh yeah!!! Beautiful. Love the wall treatment, blind, and light fixture most.
Won't the moisture from the showers eventually do something to the tape?
Tape and wallpaper i guess
Looks so much better. I love watching your creative makeovers. I’m sure they will love it.
