    The Karman line doesn't start at 100km just because. That is the point in the atmosphere where the air is too thin to support flight do to aeronautical lift. At that point you would need to go so fast that you would actually be orbiting and not flying.

      Jeff Smith fucking thank you!!! he just failed to define why the karman línea is there

    • @mesoth5848
      @mesoth5848 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Different space/aircrafts have different lift, so the Karman Line would probably be a bit different depending on what you are sitting in. It may be easier to just place the line somewhere.

      Aleksander Jovanovic You can make the Bible say all sorts of things if you pull verses out of context. My quote was just to point out that I could make the Bible say the earth is round, but the fact is the Bible is not a science book and is not concerned with telling us the shape of the earth. The Bible is about God's plan to bring a fallen world back to Him. Us knowing the shape of the earth is irrelevant to that plan. That being said, both verses you are quoting have nothing to do with the shape of the earth. As for the verses you are quoting. The earth is firmly established and shall not be moved as in it is firmly established as under God's sovereignty and will not ever be taken out of that status. The passage you are citing is part of a psalm of sorts worshiping God and who He is and His greatness. It is not about the shape of the earth. The Job passage, again, yanked out of it's context and having meaning applied to it that was never intended. The passage doesn't even touch the subject of the shape of the earth. This, much like the previous passage, is poetically written and uses imagery that cannot be taken 100% literally, unless you mean to tell me you believe the sky is made of bronze (more historically accurate than glass because glass mirrors didn't exist at the time)? Basically the point of this verse is, who are you compared to God? Did you make the sky with Him? No. You are not even close to His equal.
      Let's stop trying to make the Bible a science book. It's not. Read the scriptures for what they were intended to be. The earth is very clearly round. We've been to space. We've seen the earth. You can see the curvature of the earth from an airplane or even from a high mountain. If the earth isn't round then we've got a whole lot of physics wrong and there's a lot of tech we have today that shouldn't work but does. Do you use a GPS? If the earth isn't round that shouldn't work. Have you ever used satellite view in Google maps? If the earth isn't round that wouldn't be a thing.
      To avoid getting myself upset you'll understand that I won't be replying to this thread any further. But before leaving I"m going to throw this last bit in. The earth is about 4.5 billion years old and the Bible doesn't address nor is it concerned with how old the earth is. Good day sir.

    I have a question. Are the different layers of the atmosphere made up of different molecules? Like those science experiments where you have a tube and have a variance of densities. When you shake the tube, the liquids always rearrange themselves from dense to least dense. So is the thermosphere only made up of molecules like hydrogen and helium and so on down the layers?

    Karmen Line: Below this point there is enough air pressure for airfoils to maneuver in flight (aeronautics). Above the line the atmosphere is too thin for airfoils. This is the realm of astronautics rather than aeronautics. Maneuvering has to done using attitudinal thrusters instead of wings.

    I think the main question is...
    Where does the space end?

    • @attitudekilleroriginal
      @attitudekilleroriginal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be a place where there are no atoms of earth or any belonging of earth except for gravity, because gravity has an infinite pull. So even if its just you and earth in each corner of the universe, earth will still have gravitational pull. That would be negligible though, the time taken to actually pull will be infinite too.

    Bill Nye asked the question, "What is the closest point to space on Earth?"
    The answer Nye gave was Mt. Chimborazo, it is the farthest point from the center of the Earth because of the bulge at the equator.
    I don't think this is correct because the atmosphere also bulges at the equator and the distance to space would remain the same.
    .....anyway
    Would you give your thoughts on the question?

    The graphics are misleading in not stating clearly that the distances are exaggerated relative to the earth curvature shown. They make it seem as if the atmosphere is "deeper" than really it is. Reduce the earth to the size of a basketball and 90% of the atmosphere will lie at or below the tops of the pebbling on the surface of the ball. In large scale, the atmosphere is less like an ocean floating over the earth, more like a skin.

    Who’s here in 2021, after the Virgin Galactic flight? That only reached 50km, so I had to be sure.

    • @willoughbykrenzteinburg
      @willoughbykrenzteinburg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It reached over 83 km. It was around 50 MILES (not km). The Karman line - which is defined as 100 km - is actually calculated to be about 83 km. The FAI simply rounded it up to 100 km for convenience's sake. The issue is that there is no hard line where space starts. As was said in the video - even above just about 30 miles, you are above over 99% of the atmosphere. The difference in atmosphere between the 50+ miles the Virgin flight flew and the 62 miles or so at the "official" Karman line is insignificant. There is no empirically scientific basis to assert one is definitely space while the other is definitely not. The Virgin flight reached space for all useful intents and purposes. It experienced zero gravity. You experience zero gravity due to being in scientific free fall. You reach scientific free fall because gravity is the only thing having an effect on you - which means drag is not - because there is no atmosphere to create drag - because you are in space. All other references to boundaries are arbitrary and for the sake of convention. They are not based on empirical scientific bases. And by the way, the U.S. Military and NASA recognize 50 miles as the beginning of space. This is still arbitrary, but is a closer representation of the original conceptually calculated Karman line of 83 km. This is when NASA will give you astronaut wings - which is why the Virgin flight aimed for this altitude.

    The karmen line is the defined boundary to space because the velocity required to achieve lift is equal to the velocity it takes to achieve orbit

    I think one important thing to point out is that the Karman line itself is just as arbitrarily placed. The only reason it sits at exactly 100 km is because the FAI rounded it up to this - rounded up from the ~83 km Karman originally conceptually calculated. They did so because they recognized just how arbitrary it was, and 100 km is a nice round number. It's also the same reason the U.S. governing bodies on such matters (i.e., when astronauts get their wings) places the boundary at 50 miles. It's just as arbitrary - and it's rounded as well, but much closer to the original Karman line as Karman himself conceptualized. In other words, the beginning of space is a subjective range. It would be silly for anyone to suggest that someone is definitely not in space on one side of some arbitrarily placed boundary directly adjacent to that boundary and definitely in space just on the other side of that line.

    • @sto2779
      @sto2779 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it's not an arbitrarily place. I it has a valid purpose as mention in the video. Its when air does not exists, therefore space level in terms of rocket science. However I would consider real space level is when earth's gravitational pull is at it's minimum regardless if air or no air exists and I'm sure there is a term for that as well.

      You have to be about 20km up (65,000 feet) to reach the tropopause - where the troposphere ends and the stratosphere starts. All commercial aircraft fly well below 65,000 feet. So, no, planes do not fly in the stratosphere and, yes, the video is wrong.

    I have a question where google couldn't help me:
    Since Moons like Io are bombarded with radiation (from Jupiter), but are also tidally locked. Does that mean the "far side" is less radioactive, and if yes how much? It probably wont be too low, but there should still be a clear difference. How about Europa?
    Thanks.

    The question where space starts is simple: the karman line. Period, that is not arguable because it's a man-made limit. Now, if the question is where does the atmosphere end? That's impossible to answer, you can find traces of it thousands of miles away.

  • @glenhuysamer

    This is a very open-ended conundrum. One could argue that space begins in one's thoughts and that all these 'scientific' proclamations between where space begins, began, ends, stops and starts is more about "whom" actually said that space is separate from the earth. As if humans are technically prisoners stuck here below some measured invisible line of changing particles. Well, that line has always been there as so many other "lines" have always been here in space. Suddenly some individual comes along and complicates matters by claiming that between this section and that section of the Univers we have space and below this we have.....everything else? I always said there is more here than just "the universe".
