Saw Dan and the Acoustic Warriors for my first time at the Strawberry Music Fest in the 80s. I wasn't familiar with many of the band members and at one point in a particularly uptempo song he said, "Hey Paul, what you got" and Paul Mehling started picking that SAGA guitar. I was blown away. I checked him out later to find that he was a member of the Hot Club of San Francisco. A friend was going to Healdsburg, Ca and a luthier's festival at which Scott Nygaard and Paul Mehling would be appearing. My friend knew Scott's music and magic. I suggested he MUST check out Paul Mehling. He came back with books and CDs on Gypsy Jazz and said Paul had given him some hints on starting to learn Gypsy jazz. That guy is freaking amazing.
I remember in 89 watching this and at this song is when I fell in love with dan. I popped a tape in the vcr to catch the final few songs. so im so stoked you are sharing this gem of a concert from Austin
mozzbozz When my 2 year old daughter would become rambunctious I would play this tape. She would sit on my knee and bob her head. Dan Hicks the babysitter go figure.
Hicks was a musical mensch. Seeing him even after his departure makes me happy because he always made me feel better than I was.
