I absolutely loved these guys in college. If you didn’t smile or tap your feet you were probably on the wrong planet. Fifty years later I like them even more.
a BAD acid trip and dan with this song brought me down... LIVE MUSIC !!! always a smile with his wisdom. well, the girls help also... THANK YOU !!! bob
Absolutely unique. And what a stellar line up of talent. Symphony Sid Page. John Girton. Jamie Leopold. Naomi Ruth Eisenberg. Mary Ann Price. Led by the eccentric genius, Dan. Saw him in the last decade and he said there were some songs that he couldn’t do without these five right here.
I remember when I was in high school in the early 70’s, and we would get odd work about midnight, go over to our friend’s hangout and play Dan Hicks music for hours! It’s like drinking a root beer float on a hot summer night!!!
@@cojaxart8986 Great memory-did the same in college. Can you imagine anyone in high school or college today, getting together as a group to listen to something as unique as Dan Hicks? To them it would be music from Mars…:)
I remember seeing Dan Hicks at a small venue in Houston years ago. We encountered him on the stairs. He and my husband shared sarcastic comments. It was a good thing.
Loved Dan Hicks back in my college days (early to mid 70's). An absolutely unique and enjoyable style. One of the unsung major talents. Wish he was still around. Thanks for posting this
OMG! Thank you! I got to see them live when I was a sophomore in high school (1972). "Canned Heat" was the opening act, but Dan and the Hot Licks stole the show, absolutely! I'm so blessed to have seen them live, and they have been a significant and profound part of my music history. I recently "schooled" a youngin regarding Thomas Dolby's cover of "I Scare Myself".
Thanks so much for posting. My favorite Dan Hicks song ever. My wife and I often sang along with me doing Dan's lines and her filling in for both Lickettes - just the thing for a romantic evening! Naomi's not a "classic beauty," but I'm not ashamed to say I had a serious crush on her at age 17.
Saw these guys live at UT-Austin in the early 70's, got totally hooked because it was so different. Last train to Hicksville is one of my most played vinyl albums.
So many bay area memories... Dan , the ladies , fillmore, winter land, boardinghouse, What a long, Amazing Trip it's been. Thank-you bay area musicians ! You all Are sweet as honey! Bless you Dan
The best music bar none for getting a coed in a friendly frame of mind after a night at the clubs. I knew Mary Ann was my future wife as soon as I graduated. If you can keep from smiling check your pulse.
Sitting on the porch tonight listening to the tree frogs I found myself singing "I'm an Old Cowhand". Just had to find some more Dan Hicks to listen to. Now grooving on a bunch of DH videos on here, but this one... !!!!! So many great memories of these folks' music providing inspiration and joy in my life.
If one had to definitively describe Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks, it's almost as if Franz Kafka, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Oscar Wilde all came back to life in 1927 and started a band. That level of collective thinking outside of the box is what they delivered. And we remain all the better off for it.
i got to see Dan a few times, with most of these people.... this you tube thing is canned, i remember them on the radio. no juke boxes... THANK YOU !...bob
saw Dan and Warriors in mid 80's at McCabe's Santa Monica. Fan since early 70's. Again in 2011/Livermore. Had tix for Dec. 2015 but for some reason didn't go. What a character and so creative. RIP.
Some really inspired solos here... and the "inside joke" that Dan WAS a drummer... for the Charlatans... just a Pearl of a song-- and performance. ^..^
At a show in Detroit, I asked Dan a riddle. "What was the last thing the drummer said before he was fired from the band?" Dan thought a moment, and then (correctly) answered "Hey, I wrote a song for the band."
True Story..... My brother and I went to see DH & HHL's and in between songs my brother hollered out a big "Whooooooooo" only to get a remark from Dan stating that "We reserve this time in our show for all the "ASSHOLES in the crowd to speak up!!!!! Fucking Awesome....Then they played back to back "Canned Music" and "News from up the Street".It was magical!!...He controlled that stage from the minute he started the show till he walked off stage.....I Loved Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks as well as each individual band member.......Sid Page , Jaime Leopold John Girton Including Maryann Price and Naomi Eisenberg ...I was proud to be an early fan......And still am to this day!!! RIP Dan and Jamie!!

Such brilliance. RIP Dan Hicks.
Dan looks and sounds terrific here. Really fine performance from everybody, with lots of new surprises in the arrangement. Bravo!

First DH song I caught on the radio back in the FM days, 1973 or 74. Was the signature DH song for me.
Shaw McGee Me too. When I found out he passed away I was really shook up. I still am.

Love the tree frog symphony summer trees and air you swim thru.
Oh, yeah, Dan's the Man.
I love Dan Hicks so much. Gosh I miss him. Just such beautiful music.
One of my all time favorites. Love them sandblocks. 😊
So smooth.... loving it!
can’t be alone here, how many more squealed out when the Hot Licks walked up on stage?...
You mean the Lickettes, right?
Licks are musical numbers, Lickettes are the singers.
symphony sid!!!!!. Giroton's solos are again, so wonderful. the whole band/singers are just over the top glorious
The more I listen to this song, the better it gets-and I've been listening to it since the late 70s...
I miss Dan
Yeh and thanks from me too. Love all your stuff.
So nostalgic, this band had it’s hooks in me. DH was a genius for putting this together
Fifty years of Dan Hicks has been my privilege and pleasure.

This is the song that did it for me. Awesome to see Symphony Sid!!! ❤️😎👏

Enjoyed playing with this band, fresh every night .

Best tune ever.
beautiful… just so smooth and frisky at the same time
Grew up on this album.
This is cool music.

And note: No drummer on these performances....all acoustic amplified instruments, only!
@@TheFreemanZygote Why this was such a great band.

I'm in love
Only found Dan today only to be informed he has passed, like many brilliant music men I will love collecting everything
This is so good.
