Not a translation thing. It's a maid café thing. They call fans their Masters and Princesses. Also they don't have gigs or shows they call them 'servings'. Yeah Miku claims to be a pigeon, in fact she says she has an 810 year old pigeon living in her head. She makes pigeon noises when she speaks - 'Po!' or the full form 'Kurrupo'! Don't be mistaken though, she is a very astute business woman! MISA and Akane were at the Tokyo School of Music together. Akane the drummer started off as a trombone player.
Yep, without this one so positively crazy pigeon, we probably wouldn't be talking about these exceptional musicians here today, po. :) In another interview, she described the process of how they gradually came together as a miracle. However, one should not be blinded by her appearance. This woman is strong-willed, determined, creative and if that's not already enough, she has a great vision and was realistic enough to put her dream of leading this band as the lead-vocalist on hold for the good of the whole project, bring Saiki on board and just then started to learn how to play the guitar. I can't take my hat off enough to all this po! 😇👇🏻 _____________________ 【 _Pigeons will save the world._ 】- from *cluppo* / Miku Kobato 'Peace & Love' 🕊️
Don't let the cutesy persona of Miku fool you. Her bandmates say that she's an old man at heart, daring and courageous, what she declares and how she goes about attaining it is awesome, like from the get go declaring that they're going to dominate the world with their music. She also recently came in second in a Japan Open Poker Tour in Texas Hold-em. She also frequents horse races.
Yeah, her coming second in that poker tournament gives a glimpse into how determined she is to take on new challenges. Like the way she learned the guitar in a few months well enough to hold her own on rhythm guitar parts on stage with four of the best rock musicians on the planet. Never underestimate her.
Saiki, the singer, has come out of her shell a lot in the last two years. I think the isolation of the pandemic has given her a new outlook. She and Miku (pigeon) hosted a radio show for the last year that you can find on youtube with added animations, and in that her demeanor is completely changed. She has wonderful laughter and their friendship is very apparent.
As fans of Band-Maid we are the Masters and Princesses. Some people call themselves and others Madiacs. This interview was earlier in the bands history. Miku came up with her pigeon persona based on the Kanji (Chinese style) letters of her name Kobato. The members have changed their stage personas very little in the last 3years that I have witnessed but also seem to have similar personalities off stage.
Thanks for taking the time to get to know the band a little bit more. Saiki (vo) and MISA (bass) I think are very shy in public interviews and maintain a quiet persona. We have seen behind-the-scenes videos where they are totally different.
On their upcoming tour, since the dates are so close together, they will be flying between the concerts. They have several concerts one right after the other with no break such as here in Texas they have Dallas then the next night they have Houston. They could drive it, but it is almost 6 hours drivetime. The Ladies would be exhausted from performing one 2+ hour concert the 20 hours later another 2+ hour concert. So they will be flying a lot during this upcoming tour.
The gentlemen in pink won the World Air Guitar championship. No the masters and princesses is real, it is how customers at a Maid Cafe are addressed. Due the demand for tickets for the NYC concert a second concert was scheduled. LA was 2 concerts and sold-out. FYI Saiki was 18yo when she joined the band. Miku Kobato ís a very smart, talented lady. She write all the lyrics!! Also recently she finished 2nd in the National Poker Tournament of Japan!! Must of been a lot of bruised male egos to be beaten by a "small pigeon"! Their 2022 tour is in October, 13 cities all but 1 is sold-out. The kick-off is their performance at the Aftershock Music festival at Sacramental.
The small pigeon Miku is a real marketing guru. The maid outfits to attract attention, the eccentric pigeon concept (the WT* moment) then the all so different personalities. Kanami is the quiet genius though. A real chameleon who composes the most extraordinary music. Embarking on a 20 plus city tour of the US later in the year including sell outs in the NE with 4000 capacities. Still a niche market for them that will only grow with time and more touring. They're the real deal and soon as more realise they're not a bubblegum band re their image, the greater their following will be. Deserve all of the respect and success they achieve.
Here is a link of a performance they did in Seattle 2016 where they introduce themselves th-cam.com/video/voLy7abBcCw/w-d-xo.html *Miku Kobato* (Kuruppo) = Vocals / Rhythm Guitar po! *Saiki Atsumi* (Sai-Chan) = Vocals *Kanami Tono* (Kanamincho) = Lead Guitar *Akane Hirose* (A-Chan) = Drummer *MISA* (MISA, MISA, MISA) = Bass
In one of the other interviews they were all asked what their individual 'charm points' were (it's an idol thing), Saiki's answer was brilliant. No spoilers.
The founder of the band Miku Kobato (red flower) Vocals/ Rhythm Guitar- Kobato means Small Pigeon in Japanese. She finishes sentences when talking with 'Po'. this is an abreviation of the word Kruppo, the sound a pigeon makes. Yes, the Masters and Princesses are the men and women fans. Okyuji is a live show often refered to as a serving. These come from her Maid Cafe days. There are only three and a half humans in the band as Akane the drummer is known as the half Gorilla/Human, as she eats bananas duing shows. They say that Kanami- the lead guitarist becomes possesed on stage when she plays her guitar, as you can be seen in some fan cam footage of her solo freeform guitar piece on stage- she is usually very shy and polite. Saiki (Ice Queen), the lead singer is also usually quiet and reserved and dosen't say much like Misa the bass player- you can see her bottle of Jim Beam or beer cans on her amp at live shows.
Miku Kobato, founder & rhythm guitar and backing vocals - the kanjis in her name “Kobato” can be translated as "small pigeon", and because of that she uses the onomatopoeia "po" (ぽ) or says Kurruppo at the end of her phrases, imitating the sound of a pigeon. She has worked previously as a maid in maid cafes in Akihabara, and that's what inspired the band's theme. Miku has a solo side project called “cluppo” with “Hippy-pop” music targeting a more pop audience than Band-Maid. She has 3 TH-cam videos from her EP released a few months ago released in this order - Peace & Love - very catchy - Flapping Wings - different - Pogo - interesting as it incorporates more electronica elements plus she changed her look, probably better approach for a 30-year old artist With her incredible energy and outgoing personality, Miku was going to be famous one way or another, I think. She’s a dynamo. She did some acting and was in a girl group, working 3 jobs on the side, one at a maid cafe, when she came up with the idea for Band-Maid and took it to her girl group management - they liked it and told her, if she could find the members who could pull it off, they’d provide some songwriters to help get them started. She did. It worked (barely - thanks to “Thrill”), and the rest is history. She’s the primary lyricist and writes some very poignant and thoughtful lyrics. Saiki and Misa are just bad-asses who you don’t mess with and probably don’t suffer fools easily. Akane is a goofball but all business behind the kit. Kanami is the musical genius of the band, composing and arranging the songs, although she does get much more input these days than before when she wrote everything. Kanami has a split personality - quiet, shy bookworm, genius music composer (she plays piano fluently & composes much of their music on piano), but then she’s a riff-slaying demon when she straps on her axe and plugs in!! Now they have a work process where Kanami lays down basic tracks, asks for riff and melody ideas from the others, and works particularly with Misa to refine the melodies and arrangements - Akane gives input and enhances the percussion. Miku writes lyrics and works with Saiki on the vocal melodies and vocal recordings. They have a weekly work schedule which I think Akane schedules and ensures everyone is doing their parts. They are a well-oiled, high work ethic group of professionals! Miku says it’s a miracle they came together the way they did and all I know is I’m glad they did!! 🔥✌🏼🤘🏼
6:01 As a side note, this MC is a second-generation talent whose parents are an actor and a former national idol singer. It looked like smooth sailing for her as the voice of Anna in the Japanese version of "Anna and the Snow Queen," musical actress, and singer. Unfortunately, she took her own life at the end of last year at the young age of 35. There has been a recent trend of suicides of young actors and singers who seem to be doing well and selling well, but the death of this man was also shocking news in Japan.
Misa is still a quiet person, but Saiki ( singer ) did chnage a lot in meantime. She is smiling and laughing much more. There have been some radio shows on TH-cam called Band-Maid Nippon with Saiki and Miku. They had so much fun together. So Saiki is not the Ice Princess anymore, but only the princess. 😄
You are right that Saiki always seemed to look as if she does not want to be there in interviews up to this point, she's not called The Ice queen for nothing. I do wonder if it was simply that she just found it uncomfortable, it's not Misa's natural element either and then there is of course Miku's overwheming personality. Saiki is definitely thawing though and looking at the 'informal' stuff they've posted on instagram and elsewhere both Saiki and Misa are much more relaxed and fun around friends.
"Masters and princesses" is how they refer to customers in a maid cafe. It's basically part of their gimmick on stage that they refer to their fans that way. And "okyuuji" means "service," basically what you call serving someone food in Japan. So they keep up the maid cafe theme by calling their concerts and live shows a "okyuuji," like they're giving service with their music. OK now that you've watched that one, you have to watch this: Kanami will very cutely sell you PRS guitars. It's fun to watch her play them, and at the end she talks about her own experiences and why she chose a PRS. (Skip to 17:10 if you want to just see her personal story.) th-cam.com/video/E8dk0oQ6dKg/w-d-xo.html
I missed this video when you first aired it but this is a fun video (interview). If you ever see this, the best interview that I have seen with these ladies is the Herman Li (from Dragon Force)interview (audition). It is only with Miku and Kanami, but Herman Li is such an amazing interviewer, and he has a great sense of humor and his questions are so interesting fun, that I think that you will enjoy it. The entire interview is on Twitch on Herman Li dragon Force channel it is about 90 min. It all caps off with an amazing and hilarious audition for Herman Li audition for Band Maid playing with Miku and Kanami on the Band Maid instrumental called Without Holding Back. This audition segment is actually on TH-cam and is worth watching. Great video you guys. Cheers.
If you check out some of the offstage "kawaii moments" videos on TH-cam by fans who compiled stuff from the band's early Facebook/Instagram/Twitter posts, you will see Miku having fun irritating Saiki, but also that Saiki can frequently be as goofy as the rest of them. And MISA is actually the biggest cut-up of the group offstage. The red rose in Miku's headpiece and and the blue one in Saiki's are meant to symbolize their different personalities, but in these earlier interviews they're probably also intentionally playing up that difference a bit. Like all the extra details they cram into their songs, the lore and personal stuff isn't _necessary_ to appreciate the music, but it adds a lot of extra depth and enjoyment to the experience.
From what I've seen, Miku is always in character as a little pigeon and does a 15 minute standup routine in the middle of every concert. She keeps the shtick going all the time and is constantly promoting. The girls actually seem to love each other. Saiki, the lead singer, has a natural aloof demeanor but gets along well with the others. I think MISA is just terribly shy. Kanami, the lead guitar, seems like an airhead but is the genius songwriter behind the band, and keeps their music production and practice organized. Actually, they all exaggerate their public images kinda like exaggerated anime characters. Remember, they started with the maids play hard rock thing trying to differentiate theirselves from the rest of the music scene. As their music and skills developed, they stuck with what worked. Their fans just take it as a sweet eccentricity, like having a long time friend with a corny hobby.
MISA and Saiki actually laugh a lot off stage. In a TV interview show, MISA said that she worried about the nasolabial fold: th-cam.com/video/-uplNbxIues/w-d-xo.html (at 9:24 MISA talked about this) Saiki has been laughing a lot even during interviews recently. It's great that your checking out Band Maid's interviews. Their personalities are fun and you get to delve deeper into Band Miad and everything that makes them tick.
Reality Check TV on TH-cam they have a translator for the interview. Saiki's nicknames is the ice queen, so she was in character. She does more interviews now and slips out of character.
I've thought of that comparison too, although Bjork (and I think she's a creative genius) comes across as somewhat of a diva living in a bubble and Kobato seems more down-to-earth and grounded. But the IDGAF attitude and adherence to their creative vision are very similar.
If you're completely unfamiliar with maid cafes, this pair of (then) ex-pat Canadians shot a fun video in the very cafe that Miku worked at. th-cam.com/video/hzLK_YRD3w8/w-d-xo.html Gives a bit of a look-in.
I checked, I don't think you've reviewed Onset. If you want to really see their musical talents on display, you have to watch Onset. It's an instrumental.
Fun fact: During all the live videos you can almost always find what MISA is drinking for that show. She always places her bottles on top of her amp stack.

Funniest interview answer.
Miku : "What's your first impressions of San Francisco, MISA"?
MISA" : "Alcatraz state federal penetentiary". 🤣
Yeah that was funny af! MISA said it with a straight face. Everyone just turned and stared at her!

I've thought of that comparison too, although Bjork (and I think she's a creative genius) comes across as somewhat of a diva living in a bubble and Kobato seems more down-to-earth and grounded. But the IDGAF attitude and adherence to their creative vision are very similar.
Saiki is always like that.
Entertaining on and offstage ....
Miku-chan is not even from Japan...she's from Po-planet...the planet (or perhaps the dimension) of pigeons...
I thought Miku is from PO-land😁

Fun fact: During all the live videos you can almost always find what MISA is drinking for that show. She always places her bottles on top of her amp stack.
