  • August Blom's silent film is considered one of the first feature-length disaster films in film history.the film depicts a woldwide catastrophy by an errant comet. the music by martin schütz was created in a live improvisation with acoustic cello and live electronics on june 1st 2018 at cinema rex in bern.
"An early masterpiece of Danish silent film, in which the end of the world after a collision with a meteorite is played out very realistically in unusual images. The experience of the First World War had shaken the values, and the film devotes far more space to excitement, concern and fear than the catastrophe itself. Despite limited means, the film paints an impressive picture of a universal catastrophe." (Bonn Summer Cinema 2007)
"A meteor races toward Earth. People are preparing for extinction in different ways. Some, as is so often the case in times of crisis, know how to beat from this profit. Skilful information policy means millions are earned on the stock market. The isolated people can only defend themselves against the better-off bourgeoisie by force, the class struggle rages to the bitter end. The real catastrophe of the imminent end of the world plays a supporting role in Verden's downfall, a science fiction from the very beginning. The emotional entanglement of the protagonists, the juxtaposition of ruthless opportunism and social responsibility set the tone." (film.at)
